According to Roadrunner Records, DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci and vocalist James LaBrie recently sat down with Roadrunner UK and answered questions submitted by fans, including: which of their older albums does 2013’s Dream Theater resemble; whether they’ll ever do another concept album; and whether they write melodies to correspond with James’s vocal range. According to Bravewords.com, the Mastermind Arjen Lucassen has been hard at work for the past few months on the forthcoming new AYREON album, The Theory Of Everything. Ayreon albums are known for their array of guests, and he’s just announced on YouTube that DREAM THEATER keyboardist Jordan Rudess will be featured on the album:
Lucassen previously revealed NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER keyboardist Keith Emerson, GRAND MAGUS vocalist JB, YES keyboardist Rick Wakeman, and LACUNA COIL singer Cristina Scabbia will appear on the album:
Lucassen also commented further on the new album: “It’s going to be a double album, so there is a lot to write! It’s extra challenging as well, because lyrically I’ve left the old Ayreon universe behind and have to create a new one from scratch. I’m really excited about the line-up and how everything is PROGressing so far. There is physics involved, but mainly it’s about human relationships and the emotional costs that come with treading the fine line between genius and madness.”
According to Blabbermouth.net, “Impermanent Resonance”, the new solo album from DREAM THEATER frontman James LaBrie, has registered the following first-week chart positions:
Germany: #48
The Netherlands: #67
UK: #22 (Rock Albums chart)
“Impermanent Resonance” was released on August 6 in North America and July 29 in Europe via InsideOut Music. In addition to the standard CD and the digital download format, the effort was made available in Europe as a limited-edition digipak featuring alternate artwork and two bonus tracks (“Unraveling” and “Why”), as well as on limited LP version (with the full album as bonus CD).
The previous LaBrie album, “Static Impulse” from 2010, was released for the first time as LP (with the full album as bonus CD) on the same street date as that of the new album. Both LPs are available on 180-gram black vinyl but also on strictly limited clear vinyl (limited to only 200 copies each).
The follow-up to 2010’s “Static Impulse”, “Impermanent Resonance” was once again conceived with LaBrie‘s songwriting partner for over a dozen years, Matt Guillory. Guillory not only took the leading role in composing the material, he also handled all of the keyboards and background vocals.
The album’s lineup is intact from the previous recording, featuring Marco Sfogli from Italy on guitar, Ray Riendeau (HALFORD, MACHINES OF LOVING GRACE) on bass and Swedish drummer Peter Wildoer (DARKANE, MAJESTIC), who was a finalist in the DREAM THEATER drum auditions. Additionally, former SOILWORK guitarist Peter Wichers came into the fold to contribute songwriting and studio guitars.
“To me, this album incorporates and continues with the styles and musical direction that we have created with the previous releases,” says James LaBrie. “The difference being that the music on this disc is to me a true telling of the songs evolving and taking on a sense of identity that is every band’s ultimate goal. It is powerful, memorable, hook-driven and above all extremely musical. It shows how the writing and the band itself have matured. I truly feel that this is our quintessential album.”
“Impermanent Resonance” was once again mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street recording studios (KREATOR, OPETH, PARADISE LOST, SYMPHONY X) with Jens Bogren and this time also Tony Lindgren. Visually, Canadian LaBrie hooked up with Gustavo Sazes (ARCH ENEMY, FIREWIND, KAMELOT) to capture and translate the album’s atmosphere into the striking artwork.

“Static Impulse” sold around 1,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 14 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
“Static Impulse” was released on September 28, 2010 (one day earlier internationally) via InsideOut Music. The CD was LaBrie‘s first solo effort in over five years.
Progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER will release their new, self-titled album — the band’s 12th studio release overall, and fourth with Roadrunner Records — on September 24.
A track from the CD, “The Enemy Inside”, will premiere on Monday, August 5 at USAToday.com.
Says guitarist John Petrucci about “Dream Theater”: “I see every new album as an opportunity to start over. To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground.
“This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic.
“We’re incredibly excited about ‘Dream Theater’ and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”
The nine-track disc was recorded at Cove City Studio in Glen Cove, Long Island, with Petrucci producing and Richard Chycki engineering and mixing. It’s the band’s second album with drummer Mike Mangini, and the first one on which he was a part of the writing process from Day One.
In January, Petrucci said of Mangini‘s work: “When people hear the drumming on this album, they’re gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn’t there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”

DREAM THEATER will be on tour in Europe in January and February 2014, and in North America in March 2014.
“Live At Luna Park”, DREAM THEATER‘s live concert, which was previously scheduled for release in May via Eagle Rock Entertainment, will now drop in North America on November 5 as a Blu-ray, 2DVD, 2DVD + 3CD, Blu-ray + 3CD, deluxe edition with 40-page book, Blu-ray + 2DVD + 3CD, and digital video via iTunes.
