Before EVERGREY embark on their European tour with KATATONIA, the Swedish metal titans return with a new song, “OXYGEN!”, channeling their essence with renewed intensity. Blending eerie atmospheres and crushing riffs, it delves into themes of depression and inner struggle. Fueled by their new drummer, Simen Sandnes, a fresh production team with Tom S. Englund and Vikram Shankar (Within Temptation, Silent Skies), and the mix of Adam “Nolly” Getgood – known for his work with giants like Periphery, Sleep Token and Architects – EVERGREY sound as vital as they did at their start, yet fiercely modern. “OXYGEN!” becomes both a desperate plea for resilience amidst darkness and a cathartic release – a visceral cry for air in the suffocating grip of turmoil.
Come Monday, November 10, EVERGREY will bring the new single to stages across Europe and the UK. Teaming up with label mates KATATONIA, and with support from Klogr, they will play 32 shows, starting in the Finnish city of Turku and closing their six-week run shortly before Christmas in their home country’s capital, Stockholm. Find the list of dates below!
EVERGREY about “OXYGEN!”: “We’re thrilled to unleash our new single, ‘OXYGEN!’. This is EVERGREY at our most explosive – almost certainly our heaviest track yet, packed with crushing riffs, vibrant key changes, and soaring melodies that’ll awaken your soul. Lyrically, it embodies the raw, suffocating weight of an inner darkness, yet symbolizes the relentless never-ending war to break free and grasp that fleeting breath of hope. We’ve bled for this one and can’t wait for you to live in its intensity. Because this is us, like you’ve never heard before!”

EVERGREY, Gothenburg’s pioneering masters of darkness, have unveiled a new official video for “Cold Dreams” from their upcoming fourteenth studio album, Theories of Emptiness, set for release this Friday, June 7 via Napalm Records. This sonic majesty cut from the new album showcases an out-of-this-world vocal performance by band leader and vocalist Tom Englund, alongside a guest appearance by Jonas Renkse (KATATONIA) and Englund’s daughter, Salina – contributing lush backing vocals that enhance the song’s dynamics and highlighting another intense facet of the album.
Theories Of Emptiness stands as the distinguished successor to their worldwide chart-topping release, A Heartless Portrait(The Orphean Testament), and is leaving critics breathless all over the world. Seamlessly blending dark, emotive themes with complex progressive elements and melodic heavy metal, the album is already making waves, ranking #1 in the soundcheck charts of German Rock Hard, German Metal Hammer, Aardschok and Sweden Rock. With Theories Of Emptiness, EVERGREY have crafted an absolute masterpiece and goose-bump generator, solidifying their legacy as they continue to shape metal history after 30 years in the industry.
Tom Englund on “Cold Dreams”: “’Cold Dreams’ is probably the darkest piece of music on Theories of Emptiness. Its somber power is quite overwhelming. It’s a composition that honestly leaves me feeling a bit uneasy. To have Jonas Renkse of Katatonia singing words describing fates that we both encountered makes it even more special and intriguing. Jonas’ unique voice of sadness spreads like a disease and to hear him growl, again, is just fucking great! To balance the darkness, we decided to bring in some angelic qualities, and at the time of composing, I couldn’t imagine anything more suiting than my daughter Salina Englund’s voice. We cannot wait to hear what you feel after these 6 minutes and 46 seconds of soul searching. Enjoy!”
Theories of Emptiness was produced by Tom S. Englund and Jonas Ekdahl, and was mixed by Adam “Nolly” Getgood (ex-Periphery), who worked closely with the band from the start – bringing out the vividness of the album’s overall sonic profile. Rounding out the album’s production, mastering was helmed by Thomas “Plec” Johansson (Soilwork, The Night Flight Orchestra, Onslaught, The Gems, Eleine and many more).
Theories of Emptiness follows its chart-topping and critically acclaimed predecessor, 2022’s A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), which entered charts worldwide at #3 in Sweden (Metal), ranked #5 on the Top New Artist Albums charts in the United States, entered #7 in Finland and #12 in Germany.
“For us, progression is paramount”, states Tom S. Englund when discussing the eleven track opus, Theories of Emptiness. “We’re dedicated to ensuring that our music remains innovative and avoids stagnation. With each album, we strive to introduce something new — a unique flavor, a different key or chord, fresh voices in our writing, or innovative production techniques.” In fact, no stone has been left unturned. Tracks are created to balance each-other mutually: from the aggressive tones of “Misfortune“ contrasting the light-hearted opening of “To Become Someone Else“, to the ballad “Ghost of My Hero“ leading into the furious riffs of “We Are the North“. Album opener “Falling From the Sun” and “Say” interweave heaviness with mesmerizing keyboards and unpredictable instrumental parts, as also heard on “The Night Within“. Ending on a quiet note, Theories of Emptiness depicts exactly what emptiness is about, first with the immersive “Our Way Through Silence“, and then with “A Theory of Emptiness” which, with timid piano, makes us rationalize our innermost feelings. Navigating realms of darkness and light, Theories of Emptiness takes listeners on a carefully balanced roller coaster ride – showcasing EVERGREY‘s ever-evolving sound in 2024 and beyond.
Tom Englund adds: “Our new album is soon to be yours! We can’t wait for that to happen, there are so many new and refreshing elements on it as well as respect paid to every part of our past. We have just refined what we always have done and tried to make it as contemporary as we possibly could to please ourselves and our sonic expectations. With the presence of Adam ”Nolly” Getgood, we felt fired up, hungry and eager to do our utmost to ensure that we would write the best songs we possibly could – I really feel we have achieved that. Sound quality wise we feel that it is on par with the best the world has to offer today. It is a brave statement that I will stand behind for the rest of my life. Taking EVERGREY into a new cycle feels just as when I did it the first time. We are more motivated than ever, and with a lot of touring to be announced very soon, we cannot wait to come and play this new music for you. Finally, we need to mention that we couldn’t be prouder to announce our guest vocalist for this album. Jonas Renkse has graced KATATONIA’s music with his unique atmosphere for decades. Now we in the band and the fans of EVERGREY get to experience the same and we couldn’t be more excited! You might even get to hear Jonas growl for maybe the first time in many years… Much love, Tom”

EVERGREY, Gothenburg’s finest export of darkness, unveil their eagerly awaited second single, “Say”, together with an official music video. The heartfelt track seamlessly blends raw heaviness with enchanting keyboards and unexpected instrumental parts, offering an unparalleled melodic progressive metal experience along with the outstanding vocal offering of band mastermind Tom S. Englund.
“Say“ is taken from EVERGREY’s forthcoming album, Theories of Emptiness, set for release on June 7, 2024 via Napalm Records. Since the announcement off their new release, Theories of Emptiness has been hailed by critics all over the world, being called “a flawless piece of progressive metal” by Powerplay Magazine (UK), “an early candidate for the honorary title of ‘hard rock album of the year’, as well as “perhaps their best album ever” by Sweden Rock Magazine, and ranking #1 of the soundcheck of German Rock Hard magazine. With this upcoming musical genius, EVERGREY impressively prove themselves once more as a force to be reckoned with and show a seemingly endless flow of top-notch creativity that sees no bounds.
EVERGREY on “Say”: “’Say’ is one of those songs that immediately when we wrote the chorus we knew that it would be an awesome single. It will simply kill live and is a very worthy follow-up to the success of ‘Falling From the Sun’. Regarding the end of the video there will of course be questions, a lot of questions, we have the answers.”

After more than 30 years of shaping progressive metal history, EVERGREY rises again, announcing the release of their fourteenth studio album, Theories of Emptiness, set for release on June 7, 2024 via Napalm Records. This new chapter kicks off with the mesmerizing new single “Falling From the Sun”, featuring heavy riffs combined with catchy choruses and hard-hitting melancholic lyrics, and acting as as a sequel to “Ominous” – cut from their worldwide chart-topping latest album,A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament).
Guided by unmistakable founder, singer and guitarist Tom S. Englund, EVERGREY have maintained a remarkable consistency, hitting the biggest festivals worldwide, such as Wacken Open Air, Bloodstock, Summer Breeze and Graspop, and throughout thirteen studio albums. Each of these – blending dark, emotive themes with complex progressive elements and melodic heavy metal – has earned them a reputation as pioneers of the genre and secured their timeless mark on metal.
EVERGREY on “Falling From the Sun”: “‘Falling From the Sun’ is an explosive song that represents everything we are about, not only for this album, but also brings the energy that you would expect from a great new EVERGREY song. It has the riff, it has the pounding drums, the bombast, and an unforgettable hook that we are very proud to have written. Now we just want you to be devoured by the splendor of the full album as soon as possible, but let’s start with ‘Falling From the Sun’; we believe it will last you a lifetime and easily hold you over until it is time for the next single and video. We spent what feels like a Hollywood budget on the pyrotechnics used in this video as we felt that represented everything we felt the most – having those fireworks rain down on us made us feel like real rockstars for a while and the song itself feels like a rockstar on its own! We can’t wait to see what you think and feel when you see this!”

EVERGREY state: “This is the last song to be released as a stunning feature film-like video from the “Heartless Portrait” album, however, it is at the same time also the beginning. This will become much clearer VERY soon! Stay excited! :D”
A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), the follow-up to the unit’s highly successful 2021 full-length, Escape of the Phoenix (which landed at numerous chart positions worldwide), reveals a 10 track mélange of which every note, every riff and every word seeps pure poetry – creating a ceaseless intensity that mesmerizes from the very first second.
A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament) was recorded at Top Floor Studios Gothenburg, engineered by Jakob Herrman and produced by Tom S. Englund and Jonas Ekdahl, with mixing and mastering by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios (Volbeat, Destruction, Epica and many more), whereas the hauntingly beautiful album artwork was conjured by Giannis Nakos at Remedy Art Design. Swedish metal veterans EVERGREY reset their #1 Spotify track “Call Out The Dark” (over 1 million streams on Spotify) in an emotional piano vocal version, recorded at Evergrey HQ! The new single is cut from the band’s upcoming anniversary album, From Dark Discoveries to Heartless Portraits, a celebration of 30 years of Gothenburg’s finest export of darkness, set for release this Friday, December 15, 2023!
The original version of “Call Out The Dark” was released on EVERGREY’s highly acclaimed 2022 opus, A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), which entered charts worldwide at #3 in Sweden (Metal), #7 in Finland, #12 in Germany and ranked #5 on the Top New Artist Albums charts in the United States. The new, beautifully stripped-down version of the song comes with a fitting official video.
Jonas Ekdahl states: ”I love how Tom and Rikard manage to take these songs and transform them into something unique and different than its original form and sound. If you manage to remove all the production elements within a song and strip everything down to its essence, and still feel that it holds up and sounds good – you know it’s a good song! That’s exactly what they have done with these piano vocal versions in my opinion. This version of ’Call Out The Dark’ delivers slightly darker vibe and the lyrics stand out and reach you even more than on the original version.”
