EVIL MASQUERADE have announced that they have a new vocalist, Tobias Jansson. Check out the announcement on their official facebook page:
“Most of you are aware of that Apollo hasn’t been seen much with the band this year. He feels that he needs to slow down and take a time-out from his musical career for a while and focus more on his private life that has suffered from busy schedules. The band fully understands and respects this.
This is nothing new and everyone saw this coming. Therefore, as you have already seen, Evil Masquerade decided to move on several months ago. Now approaching a new album it’s time to officially introduce the new singer.
It hardly comes as a surprise for people attending Evil Masquerade’s shows this year, that the microphone has been handed over to Swedish powerhouse singer Tobias Jansson. In very short time he has grown close to the whole Evil Masquerade family and the band already sounds like a well-oiled machine live.
You can look forward to hear him on the upcoming album The Digital Crucifix. Welcome to Evil Masquerade Tobias!”
As October is the main focus for Cancer Awareness campaigns, though of course we are all aware all of the time, I wanted to conduct a series of interviews, focusing on the Metal For CancerDragon Slayer All Star Project.
The project is the brainchild of Australian musician Richard Ofsoski. Last year, Richard decided to get together an all star cast including such metal artists as Henrik Flyman (EVIL MASQUERADE), Mats Leven (THERION, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN), Snowy Shaw (THERION, MERCYFUL FATE), Tonny Kakko (SONATA ARCTICA, NORTHERN KINGS), Glenn Drover (MEGADETH, TESTAMENT), Stu Marshall (EMPIRES OF EDEN), Apollo Papathanasio (FIREWIND, EVIL MASQUERADE) plus many more. The aim is for as many music lovers as possible to buy the song from theMetal For Cancer website with 100% of the proceeds going to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.
My first interview for this project was with Henrik Flyman, guitarist with Scandinavian metallers EVIL MASQUERADE. You can read a couple of excerpts below, followed by the full interview on the player:
When asked about how the song “Let’s Unite In Rock” was recorded, Henrik said: “We were trying to raise money not spend money, so we had to do it via the internet and sending demos to each other. The most difficult part for me as producer of the song was to gather all the parts from the musicians and put them together, so it sounded like we worked together. As you can imagine, you have a vocalist in the USA, then someone in Australia or wherever. Of course, even though the quality of the recordings were good, to be able to mix it I really had to do some work to do a normal mix. But looking back, it sounded really good. the song didn’t take much time to write, as I knew where I wanted to go with it. From starting to pre-production it was something like 3 days, but the difficult part was getting the material as people were busy or on tour. But that’s the good thing about going into a project like this, because you don’t know how it will work, but I really liked the idea so I went for it, which is often the best way.”
Discussing the style of the song, Henrik had the following to say: “Basically I wanted to make a song that would cross some borders, for example if you take the old songs from bands like Black Sabbath and Dio, most people into metal like those bands, despite what type of metal they are playing now. Most of the musicians involved grew up with that kind of ’80’s music. I wanted to make the chorus a melodic anthem style, but not too cliche. So I chose to make it as it is, it’s still people uniting, but not that cheesy. As for the lyrics, I didn’t want to make it sad, as it’s such a sensitive issue and it could still be a good rock song. If you read the lyrics it’s still 100% about the issue of dealing with cancer. I think people appreciate that and it would make it easier for people to buy it, as it’s just a rock and roll song.”

How do you define what you hear when everything is beyond reality and acceptance itself? I’d suppose Evil Masquerade has found a way of explaining such things with their music. As you delve into the realms of the music and the particulars in which you are hearing it, you not only listen, but you almost become a part of it itself. This is not far from the truth with any hypnotising music, and Evil Masquerade have surely pulled this one out of the bag with their beautifully creative masterpiece of shear musical madness.
Entering the album you are shown what has made this band simply excellent, with brilliant executions of riffs and melodies, combined with the keyboards carrying along the rhythms and the vocals are something beyond all reckoning. ‘Pentagram‘ really lines you up for what is beyond an exceptional album.
Song to song you are taken on a journey of musical excellence, with the most extraordinary effect driven madness and pure heavy passages before obscurities take place like that of ‘On a Bed of Thorns‘ which is just astonishing. Before long you are thrown into the musical genius that is ‘Strangers Might Fool Ya” and the renaissance characteristic overlays of the beautiful synths. Being a fan of well used synths is a quality many bands fail to master, but this has certainly achieved it.
The album itself is worth not only a listen, but much more than that. This has to be experienced.

The 5 piece band Evil Masquerade are about to release their album “Pentagram” on May 21st. I caught with Henrik Flyman to ask him about his influences, the new album and his charity work and here’s what he had to say…
1. Hello Henrik, I’m David, Welcome To MSF!
Hi David and thank you.
2. How and why did you start playing?
I picked up a flute when I was 10, switched to piano at 11, added drums at 13, bass & guitar at 14 and then some vocals much later. Why? I had to do something and I had no interest in sports or drugs… hahaha. Except for the occasional game of backgammon and a cold one. But seriously, I don’t think you choose to become a musician. Either you are or you’re not.
3. Which bands would you say inspired or influenced you?
If we’re talking metal and hard rock I’d say bands like Rainbow, DIO, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, ACDC and all those classics. But I listen to all sorts of music as long as it’s melodic and sincere.
4. How did the name Evil Masquerade come about?
I had been in some bands that were impossible to pronounce. Therefore I wanted to go mainstream and be pronounceable. I also wanted to point people in the right direction of what to expect to come out of the speakers. We’ve been very successful with the name Evil Masquerade because it’s not more than a handful of people that expect us to be Country & Western.
5. Do you still get nervous before shows?
I never was. I look forward to them.
6. When the first album Welcome To Show was released what was your reaction to how well it was received by the fans?
I was pleasantly surprised because I didn’t know what to expect. “Welcome to the Show” is pretty different compared to what is normally released, so we were out on thin ice. But that’s how I like it. Some hated it, and many more loved it. I’m still very pleased with our debut album.
EVIL MASQUERADE is set to release their upcoming album ‘PENTAGRAM’ due to be released on MAY 21, 2012. DARK MINSTREL MUSIC is proud to announce this album showreel of the upcoming 5th Album and have included a few new tracks for your listening pleasure. With a fierce combination of heavy metal influences, heavy guitars, powerful vocals, rhythmic bass, keys and drums; this album is looking to become another great release.
Evil Masquerade is making a new stand and is making it a Metal one!
