Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voicespoke to Exciter’s bassist Allan Johnson and guitarist Daniel Dekay via Zoom. The two Exciter bandmates gave an update on Exciter’s new album that is in the works.
What stage are you at in regards to the new album?
“We are at the demo stages still, I know it seems like a long time since we last talked about it but we made a lot of progress since. We have demos of the new songs. These new songs really sound like old school aggressive, second album (Violence and Force) Exciter. Even with the scratch guitar Al did on the demos, I could really get what he was going for with the high frequencies and stuff. The songs do sound like old school and Dan Beehler sounds awesome with off rhythm stuff which I always loved about Exciter. It’s not always about 4 on the floor, there is a lot of groove and there is a lot of feel. There are no drum clicks, this is not a band that is recording with clicks, it’s totally off of feel. It’s crazy they are are recording the drums off of tape. We are doing everything old school.”
How many songs have been completed?
“Dan and Al have well over an album worth of songs written. We are shopping around a chunk of songs to try and find a home for the album. Trying to find the right home for it. These songs are completed pre-production songs. Proper recordings will be done once we get the right label. We are trying to take the approach, it has been this long since we released an album we may as well do it right.”
EXCITER’s current lineup includes Daniel Dekay, who replaced original guitarist John Ricci last fall.
Ricci previousy left EXCITER in 1985 following the release of the band’s first three classic albums — “Heavy Metal Maniac” (1983), “Violence & Force” (1984) and “Long Live the Loud” (1985).
Jimmy Kay of Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to EXCITER bassist Allan Johnson and for the first time in an interview new EXCITER guitarist Daniel Dekay who replaced original member John Ricci.

When asked about the sudden departure of original guitarist John Ricci
“That is still somewhat of a mystery we haven’t seen or actually spoke with John Ricci since it happened. We got back from our Singapore gig and we started some email chats back and forth and John Ricci just said that he is getting fed up and he wants out. Dan Beehler and I were quite surprised about this. First thing I said to John was we got tentative shows next year. So John said you and Dan can go ahead and do the shows without me and that was pretty much it. John did not give a solid reason why, I don’t know what he meant by fed up? John said yeah I am definitely out. It’s funny cause the first thing I said to Dan about this was, guess what it’s 1985 all over again. It’s like deja-vous. Back in 1985 we came back from a US tour and John said I am out I don’t want to do it anymore and me and Dan were like we have a German tour in a month what do you want to do? John said do it without me. So it was total Deja-vous .” -Allan Johnson
When asked how Daniel Dekay got the gig in Exciter
“I am originally from Ottawa so when I started playing in Metal bands when I was 14, 15 ,16 I started discovering the legends of my city, names like Exciter, Annihilator were household names everyone knew who these people were. Threw playing in bands I met Dan Beehler I became friendly with him and his family and I also met John Ricci. My best friend played in Dan’s band Beehler. Ironically enough last February I was on the 70,000 tons Metal Cruise with Banger TV and I did an interview with the original lineup of Exciter and here we are less than a year later I am in John Ricci’s boots, this is insane, the whole thing is a lot to process. I went from listening to the records religiously to learning how to play their records, this has been the most exciting thing musically for me in a very long time.”- Daniel Dekay
When asked Allan Johnson why they picked Daniel Dekay
“When I announced John Ricci left I started getting messages on Facebook from guitar players all across Canada and the US and one particular message came from Dekay and all it was is, dude I want to be in Exciter , and I said are you serious? And he said 100 million thousand billion percent. I told Dan Beehler, Dekay contacted us and Dan said , OMG this is the perfect guy.” – Allan Johnson
When asked how hiring Dekay affects the recording of the new album
“No problem as far as the new album is concerned, everything that Dan and I did in pre-production is not a problem. iIstarted laying down my songs on guitar and Dan started writing lyrics, John Ricci never did come into the studio with us to lay anything down. So right now between Dan and I we have what we have been working on together nothing really included John Ricci and anything Dekay wants to contribute we are open. ” -Allan Johnson
“I wish I can emulate what John does such a unique style of guitar playing and a huge part of the Exciter sound. For me the most important thing is bringing in my own flare but I would like to stay true to the original vibe of Exciter and attitude guitar wise. ” Daneil Dekay
When asked on the timeline of the new Exciter album
“It’s going to happen fast, we don’t have any shows coming up so we have this break about 6 months were we can really go at it.” Allan Johnson
“I think 2019 is super realistic, If I got anything to say about it” -Daniel Dekay
For The Metal Voice former singer of Anthrax, Neil Turbin was at the Los Angeles Strikefest at the Regent Theater on June 23 interviewing NIGHT DEMON, Canadian Thrashers RAZOR and reuniting with former touring Canada’s EXCITER after 35 years who used to tour with Anthrax in their Turbin era.

EXCITER When asked Exciter about their upcoming studio album(note-Exciter and Neil Turbin with Anthrax toured together in 1983 and haven’t seen each other in 35 years)
“We are in pre-production of the new album and we are just writing the tail end of it.” – Dan Beehler
“There are so many ideas we talk all the time, we bounce ideas off each other, we are constantly throwing ideas at each other, we just want to make sure it;s a great album.”- Allan Johnson
“The upcoming album has got to match the first three Exciter albums and we don’t want to rush it.” – Dan Beehler
When asked about reuniting the original lineup after so many years
“We started to realize all around the world so many happy Exciter fans and that it was way bigger than the three of us. Exciter has made so many people happy in the past couple of years a lot of people didn’t think it was going to happen, including us. We are having a great time meeting everyone everywhere we go, coming back after 30 years it was like it was yesterday.” – Dan Beehler
“Dan is the guy who dragged me in. I didn’t do anything music wise in the 90’s, Heavy Metal to me kind of died out back then. In 2002 I met up with Dan and he played me his Beehler demos and I was blown away, I said this is the best stuff you have done and I want in. I was telling John Ricci (Guitarist) it’s more fun now then it was in the 80’s. We are really having fun. Who gets to do this? There is no ego, everything is so cool now. ” – Allan Johnson
RAZOR When asked guitarist Dave Carlo of Razor about their upcoming Studio Album
“Music is done, the lyrics are in progress, the recording is going to take place in October 2018 and we have a couple of guests that are going to be on our album. I can’t say who they are right now but they are big surprises that are going to appear on bonus tracks. To get the guest we needed to adjust to their schedule. It’s not going to really affect the timeline, the new Razor record should be out early 2019. The album is going to be relentless and well executed metal.”
NIGHT DEMON When asked Jarvis Leatherby about any news on the next Night Demon album
“Space and Time can be the concept. All of our albums have started out as concept albums, we have always had an underlining theme I am just obsessed with concept albums. There are so many concepts we have tried to do in the past but I don’t know if its a financial reason or just having the time but they have never really been seen through 100%. We don’t have a time frame for the next studio album and it sucks. I do have working titles for the next album but I can’t even talk about it. We have a song called SHIT SHOW but it’s a working title. “
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to Dan Beehler vocalist and drummer for Canadian Speed Metal pioneers EXCITER. Beehler spoke about the history of the band, the reunion and the upcoming album the band is working on.

When asked about the status on the new Exciter album
“We just went into pre-production, it’s taking a long time because we don’t work on it everyday. With the live shows and rehearsing it has taken a while but it’s getting there, we are pretty excited about it, we like the material. As soon as we are done with the pre-production we are going to start recording and sometime next year it will be out.”
When asked about the musical direction of the upcoming album
“It’s hard to say we are really close to it but so far i think it is a combination of the first three albums by Exciter. it just feels so right to write the album I know the pressure is on us from all over the world to make sure the album is as good or close to the first three albums. There are only 10 songs on the album we are doing it like the old school days.”
When asked if New and old Thrash bands come up to them and cite them as an influence
” Bands like Kreator and Destruction come up to us and tell us they got into music because of Exciter and that Exciter has been a huge influence on them. We get a lot of that from the younger bands and the older bands. I know I have talked to Dave Mustaine years ago he recognized us and said Exciter is one of the pioneers. ”
When asked how difficult it was for Canadian to break into metal scene in the 80’s
“Never mind being Canadian it was hard enough, try being from Ottawa back then you had a black telephone and the mailing service and that was about it and unless you are from Vancouver or Montreal or Toronto forget it. Back then it was almost like you didn’t have a chance in hell. So we were fighting the world, fighting just to get record companies to recognize us in Canada they wouldn’t so we just signed elsewhere. It was hard because we would go out on the road with some American bands and we would have to come home and they would stay on the road and a lot of the times because of the visas because of getting over the boarder we missed out on a lot of tours in the USA which they would just grab bands down there like Anthrax or Exodus. We missed out on a lot and I think we suffered a lot being Canadian. Back then we would go and play to thousands of people touring with Motorhead and come home to Ottawa and nobody really gave a shit. Luckily the rest of the world recognized us before this country. That was back then and things are different now we have a huge Canadian following.”
When asked about how the original band reunited
” There was a bit or turmoil between guitarist John Ricci between and the members of his band the version of Exciter at the time. Something went down where the rest of the band said John had left the band and retired and John didn’t retire, so it all exploded. And Allan Johnson and I heard about all this and the remaining band members said they were going to go on with the band Exciter with the name with no original band members. I’m thinking my brother thought of that name. So I called up John Rucci and I said listen John, Allan and I are sitting right here if you want to do something give me a call. So John says well I don’t know what I am going to do it might take six months or a year to figure out. Within a week he called us up and we sat down and that was it. The first rehearsal was like we took a week off, it had been 30 years.”
Exciter will play their first classic Album HEAVY METAL MANIACS April 7 in Montreal at Le National
Los Angeles StrikeFest June 22-24 The Regent Theater
August, 9-11, 2018, Party San Metal Open Air, Germany
August 25, 2018, True Metal Invasion fest, Singapore
EXCITER‘s original guitarist and founding member John Ricci has issued an official statement:
“Great news to all EXCITER fans worldwide, myself and original members Dan Beehler and Allan Johnson have officially re-united! We intend performing our bone crushing neck-snapping Speed Metal in as many countries that will have us! To celebrate our long anticipated reunion our first confirmed gig will be at the KEEP IT TRUE festival in Lauda-Konigshofen, Germany, on April 24, 2015. We hope to see you there! Our performance will consist of all the classics that established EXCITER as one of the pioneers of Speed and Thrash. New material and a new release will eventually follow.
I also want to comment on my so-called “retirement” which was posted on various sites on February 24 by the former EXCITER members. I just want to say I never said I was going to retire. In my opinion this retirement announcement was fabricated exaggeration. What I did say is that “I need a break from music” due to some rebellious behaviour from one of the musicians in the band. So at this point all that bs is behind me and I am now focusing on delivering some new ear splitting brain rattling METAL with Dan and Allan! I want to thank all the loyal and dedicated fans and music industry individuals that contacted me during this false retirement statement and offering their support and a positive outcome to a situation that was non-repairable.
Hope to see you soon with horns high and fists in the air!”
