The HELLOWEEN machine is on a roll again and the the recordings for the follow-up to 2010’s 7 Sinners will run until the end of 2012 with a tentative release being early 2013. Singer Andi Deris has posted a video message from the recording studio in Tenerife to all the Helloween fans. Check it out at this location.
Guitarist Michael Weikath previously stated: “Right now we are busy with finalizing the songwriting process and are getting ready to take the accumulated ideas into a final selection for the new record. Everybody in the band is excited and eager to take what we have worked on so far to the next level.”
According to a press release, “The new production will again be helmed by long-time producer Charlie Bauerfeind and will of course contain all the trademarks. Already in this early stage the new effort promises to be much more than a fine follow-up to the highly acclaimed Gambling With The Devil and 7 Sinners albums. Bombastic epic pieces have been worked on as well as ultrafast heavy songs and mid-tempo anthems.”
Brazilian metallers SCELERATA have issued the following:
Helloween‘s lead singer Andi Deris (in the photo) wrote a song to the Brazilian metal band SCELERATA that will be on the band’s new album. Deris wrote the song after approving SCELERATA‘s lead singer Fabio Juan. The song ‘Must Be Dreaming’, where both Deris and Juan share the lead vocals, has been released on the band’s web site. On April 20, Aniruddh Bansal of Metal Assault conducted an interview with with former HELLOWEEN and current UNISONICsingerMichael Kiske. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Metal Assault: Did you feel that the songwriting [for the UNISONIC debut album] went through a big change when Kai [Hansen, former HELLOWEEN and current GAMMA RAY guitarist/vocalist] arrived in the band?
Kiske: Well, he has his own ways. I like him and his songwriting anyway, and I know him for a number of years now. I was always a fan of the things he was doing. When he comes into a band like UNISONIC and starts working on material, he does it in his own way. Dennis Ward, who is an American, he also has his own ways and he writes beautiful songs. It’s not that Dennis can’t write great songs, but Kai has his own style of pushing things around, and as soon as he has his hand involved, things get more interesting, at least for my ears. It just gets more of an edge. Kai has a talent for nailing things down to the basics and throw out useless stuff. I think pretty much all the songs gained a lot after he joined the band. It’s just my personal opinion. Maybe there are people who don’t see this as dramatically as I do, but I really think Kai is a huge plus to UNISONIC.
Metal Assault: The main question in the fans’ minds would be, how does UNISONIC‘s music compare to the HELLOWEEN material that you did a number of years back?
Kiske: To me, there’s not much of a difference. I’m still myself, you know. I’m a different person, of course, it’s been 23 years since the “Keeper” days. Kai has changed, too. I think when I sing stuff that he has written, it always sounds like HELLOWEEN in a certain way, because that’s just how we sound. I don’t believe in a record production that attempts to sound like records of the past, trying to fake the sound on purpose. I would never go for that. I think that’s really wrong, but we’re just ourselves, and as much as that’s the case, I think we do sound the way we always sounded. Of course, there are other people in the band now. Mandy, Dennis and Kosta are different people as compared to Michael Weikath, Ingo and Markus [members of HELLOWEEN‘s “Keeper” lineup]. So, for that matter, it sounds different, but nobody knows what the next HELLOWEEN record after “Keeper II” would have sounded like, if Kai was still in the band at that time. It might have sounded like that, but we were never the type of band that repeated itself, you know. We always tried to break some new grounds creatively, and I think that’s why those “Keeper” records, even to this day, appeal to younger people. There was some kind of a “no-fear” spirit going on, just enjoying the time and making the best out of each song, not worrying too much, and that’s what I loved about that time. To a certain extent, it’s still the same way with UNISONIC. There is still a spirit going on between me and Kai, which reminds me a lot of that time.
Metal Assault: Vocally, have you done anything different on this album, or is it the same style that we’ve known you for over the years?
Kiske: I think I’m a lot better now (laughs). I can’t really listen to myself on the “Keeper I” and “II” records. I was a baby then. I was like eighteen years old when I did the vocals for “Keeper I”. Same for “Keeper II”, I was nineteen at the time. The vocal cords were not fully developed when you’re at that age. For a man, you have to cross the age of 30 for your vocal cords to really develop. So I think in terms of the sound of my voice, I’m a lot better these days than I was back then. I sound a lot fuller, and I don’t have to kick my ass that much to sound good out there, you know. Of course as a person I have developed, so my singing has improved. The vocal performance always depends on the personality. I’m 44 years old now, and I’ve been through experiences. I’m not a teenager anymore. I’m a grown man now, and I think all that benefits the performance I’m able to give.
Metal Assault: Obviously, you got better with age in terms of your voice. But not every singer is able to do that. Some get worse with age. Do you think that’s just natural, or is there something singers can do to improve with age?
Kiske: Absolutely. I mean, singing has a lot to do with your head. I don’t have problems with my voice unless I’m having a bad time. When my soul is down, then I begin to have problems with voice, but when I feel good about things, I can sing without any problem. I think it’s pretty much the same for every singer when it comes to technique. If you do things right, there is no reason you’d lose your voice. It will change over the years, but not necessarily in a bad way, and if you’re aware of what you’re doing, you’ll be capable of singing great, and you’ll be able to do everything you used to do when you were young. As long as you deal with the changes in your voice and learn how to do things differently, you can enjoy singing your whole life, actually. When singers lose their voice, either it’s a mental problem, or they do something wrong to burn the voice. You should always try to avoid violating your voice as a singer.
The HELLOWEEN machine is on a roll again and the the recordings for the follow-up to 2010’s 7 Sinners will run until the end of 2012 with a tentative release being early 2013.
Says guitarist Michael Weikath: “Right now we are busy with finalizing the songwriting process and are getting ready to take the accumulated ideas into a final selection for the new record. Everybody in the band is excited and eager to take what we have worked on so far to the next level.”

U.K. modern hard rock band TAINTED NATION has signed a worldwide management deal with Germany’s Rock N Growl Management. TAINTED NATION is:
* Pete Newdeck (EDEN’S CURSE, GRIM REAPER, KILLERS, STEVE GRIMMETT) – Vocals
* Pontus Egberg (THE POODLES, LION’S SHARE, ZAN CLAN) – Bass
* Ian Nash (STEVE GRIMMETT, LIONSHEART) – Guitar
* Mark Cross (FIREWIND, OUTLOUD, HELLOWEEN, KINGDOM COME) – Drums
Rock N Growl and TAINTED NATION are currently shopping the band’s debut album, “F.E.A.R.”, produced by Pete Newdeck and mixed/mastered by Dennis Ward, in hopes of securing a record deal very soon.
Newdeck, who is mostly known for his work with EDEN’S CURSE and bands like GRIM REAPER, KILLERS and Steve Grimmett, started writing songs with bandmate and friend Ian Nash, who also played guitar for Grimmett, in 2009.
While with EDEN’S CURSE and supporting STRATOVARIOUS and FIREWIND in May 2009 on their U.K. tour, Pete and then-FIREWIND drummer Mark Cross became close friends and discussed the idea of forming a new band, only this time with Newdeck as the lead singer.
Newdeck‘s vocal abilities were truly convincing and in the spring of 2010, Pontus Egberg, bass player for Swedish hard rockers THE POODLES, completed the lineup.
Newdeck, Nash, Cross and Egberg recorded the TAINTED NATION debut album in the U.K. and mixed and mastered it in Germany under the supervision of Dennis Ward, producer of many successful international artists.
TAINTED NATION‘s music is described in a press release as “a commercial, modern and powerful-sounding rock mix.” Source: Blabbermouth.net
UNISONIC, featuring former HELLOWEEN bandmates Michael Kiske (vocals) and Kai Hansen (guitars; GAMMA RAY), will release their self-titled debut album on March 30th (March 21st in Japan). Kiske recently spoke with Greece’s Rockpages webzine about the new band. An excerpt is available below:
Rockpages.gr: How do you view Unisonic, as a real band or as a project?
Michael Kiske: “This is a really band; a totally different situation from the years before…I mean, I was trying to form a band with SUPARED but in reality it was yet another Kiske solo record with a different name. You can’t make bands; they just happen…and Unisonic happened! It was Kosta (Zafeiriou) and Dennis (Ward) approaching me, then Mandy (Meyer) stepped in and we were fooling around with songs for a couple of years. Then I went for a small tour with AVANTASIA and reconnected with Kai (Hansen). We thought that it would be a good time to do something together again and he was really the one who suggested that he should join Unisonic. But it needed some time! Unisonic with Kai started working towards the right direction. Before Kai, some songs were just OK and when he joined they started sounding really really good! A good example is the song ‘Star Rider’. Dennis wrote the verses and he had a chorus but it wasn’t that good. When Kai heard it, he suggested to change a few things here and there and then, in a matter of 20 seconds, the chorus sounded excellent! That’s what makes a real band. We work and discuss everything together. If someone doesn’t like something, he says so. In the end we are trying to make everyone happy.”
Rockpages.gr: We have talked a couple of times in the past under different circumstances. But, now, I guess you are more open to talk about it…if the occasion arises would you be open for a possible reunion with HELLOWEEN?
Michael Kiske: “I have the best part of Helloween in my band now! It’s not really necessary to do a reunion. I am not friend with Mr. Weikath. I have always had a good relationship with Kai. Yes, we had our differences but it was never like we hated each other or something. Now, with Kai in the band we have every right to play songs from the Helloween days….just for fun. Songs that Kai has written or I have written. Of course, we won’t play anything that Weikath has written, but the key tracks from the past, at least the majority of them, were written by Kai. We could play those songs live but I don’t see any reason for a reunion. I know the press would love that but trust me it wouldn’t be that fun. Let me tell you…just for the music, I would love to sing ‘Eagle Fly Free’ as it was always one of my favorite tunes. The things that went on between me and Weikath…I don’t forget that! I’ve never been more betrayed by any person…so, I don’t see that (reunion) happening to be honest with you.”
