IMPURE WILHELMINA breathed new life into several time-worn classics on their latest EP. But Dead Decades also includes two unreleased songs from their last album.
As they prepares for their fast-approaching European tour, today, Impure Wilhelmina are releasing a new video for “Nebulae”, a dose of fuzzy but no less incensed post-rock that was originally recorded during the sessions for Antidote.
Watch the video, which mixes live concert footage with scenes from an active volcano:
Impure Wilhelminaare no strangers to reinvention. For the past 25 years, the Geneva quartet have rolled hardcore riffs, velveteen cleans, atmospheric sludge and gloomy melodies into post-metal that’s as sharp and versatile as a Swiss Army Knife.
Next month, the band are kicking off 2024 with their first run of shows. Don’t miss the chance to hear them pay a faithfully mind-bending tribute to King Crimson or flip the smoky, after-dark romance of “La Javanaise” into a lovestruck indie rock triumph.

Now, Impure Wilhelmina are breathing new life into several time-worn classics. ‘Dead Decades’ flips the smoky, after-dark romance of “La Javanaise” into a lovestruck indie rock triumph, while also paying a faithfully mind-bending tribute to King Crimson.
‘Dead Decades’ comes out today, October 6. Their new EP also includes a cover of The Cure, plus two unreleased songs from the recording sessions for Impure Wilhelmina’s latest album ‘Antidote’.
“We’d been wanting to record some covers for a long time,” says Impure Wilhelmina. “The opportunity came in 2022 after the forced cancellation of a European tour at the end of the pandemic. We chose three songs that we all love, released during three different decades – 60s, 70s and 80s – and all three are very far removed from our usual sound. Two previously unreleased tracks from the ‘Antidote’ album sessions complete the EP. The record has a very strong nostalgic vibe, and we’re particularly proud of the result. Enjoy our Dead Decades!”

As soon as IMPURE WILHELMINA got the idea for a covers album, they knew that “Fallen Angel” was a lock to make the track list.
“King Crimson is a band that all of us listen to regularly”, the band says, “and ‘Fallen Angel’ was a song that we quickly and unanimously agreed upon”.

“Fallen Angel” is the second single from the band’s upcoming EP. The first was a cinematic cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s “La Javanaise”, which you can watch HERE.
‘Dead Decades’ comes out on October 6, 2023. The EP also includes a cover of The Cure, along with two unreleased songs from their latest album ‘Antidote’.
It makes sense that Impure Wilhelmina are fans of King Crimson. After all, the Geneva quartet have followed the British prog legends by constantly breaking the mold. For 25 years now, they’ve rolled hardcore riffs, velveteen cleans, atmospheric sludge and gloomy melodies into post-metal that’s as sharp and versatile as a Swiss Army Knife. No wonder they’ve earned comparisons to KEN Mode, Paradise Lost and The Smiths.
“We didn’t really know what it would sound like to cover such a prog monument”, the band said about “Fallen Angel”. “But we were surprised – and also, very proud – to see how well it suited out harmonic style.”

For 25 years, Impure Wilhelmina has been shaping a singular music on the borders of rock and metal. The Geneva quartet has never been afraid to reinvent itself and to push back the stylistic barriers, without ever losing its strong identity. Intensity, melody, power and melancholy are the key words that guide the band’s discography, developing record after record a subtle blend of metal, post-hardcore, new wave and indie rock sounds.
Impure Wilhelmina has experienced many line-up changes over the years around Michael Schindl, singer-guitarist, main composer and lyricist. Founded in 1996, the group quickly built a reputation in the local, then Swiss and European independent scenes. The band has released a 7″, an EP, a split and seven full-length albums (see discography).
Impure Wilhelmina has regularly collaborated with sound engineers and producers Serge Morattel (I Can’t Believe I Was Born In July – 2001, L’Amour, La Mort, L’Enfance Perdue – 2004, Prayers And Arsons – 2008) and Raphaël Bovey (Black Honey – 2014, Radiation – 2017). These five albums illustrate the constant musical evolution of the band, which from a very dark and metal base gradually incorporates more rock elements. The clear vocals occupy an increasingly important place in the compositions, reinforcing the intensity and melodic depth.
In 2015, thanks to the great response to Black Honey, Impure Wilhelmina signed with the reference metal label Season of Mist, which published Radiation two years later in 2017. Skillfully navigating between melodies and dissonances, always at the service of raw emotion, this sixth album was unanimously acclaimed by the press and the public, opening the doors to wider recognition.
In 2019, the band received great reward by being one of the four recipients of the grants for contemporary music awarded by the City of Geneva. This support has enabled Impure Wilhelmina to start working on a new album with confidence and with the will to develop their sound and get out of their comfort zone. The band put a lot of efforts in the elaboration and production of its new songs, notably by calling on Yvan Bing, producer and sound engineer, to accompany the four musicians throughout the creation process. This successful collaboration began in the summer of 2019 and continued for over a year, giving rise to Impure Wilhelmina’s seventh album, Antidote. Released in may 2021, this album is a testament to the creativity and versatility of the band, which never ceases to explore new horizons without ever getting lost.
After two European tours in 2022 (with Crippled Black Phoenix and MØL, then Shores of Null), Impure Wilhelmina focused in 2023 on the vinyl reissue of their second album “I can’t believe I was born in July”, for its 20th anniversary, and the release of a new EP entitled “Dead Decades”, which features three covers and two previously unreleased tracks.

IMPURE WILHELMINA are now releasing the first new track of their upcoming EP “Dead Decades”, which is set for worldwide release on October 6th, 2023 via Season of Mist. The record features three covers and two previously unreleased tracks taken from the recording session for their latest album “Antidote”. ‘La Javanaise’ comes in the form of an artistic music video which can now be viewed via the official Season of Mist YouTube channel HERE.
The band comments: “As soon as we thought about doing covers, this song came to mind. Serge Gainsbourg, one of the major figures of twentieth-century French music, has been around us for a very long time, even if his musical universe is far removed from our own. La Javanaise is one of his greatest (and least subversive) classics, published in 1963. This heavy cover of a song written before metal even existed contrasts with the light-hearted romanticism of the lyrics. It fits perfectly with the spirit of Impure Wilhelmina. For the video, we used archive footage of Paris in the 1960s to match the atmosphere. The whole thing was beautifully edited by Guilherme Henriques and the result is stunning!“

Post hardcore sludge band IMPURE WILHELMINA w are now releasing a brand new live video for the track ‘Jasmines’ which is taken from the band’s latest offering ‘Antidote.’ The video was recorded during one of their live shows at the L’usine venue in Geneva in October 2021. In the meantime, you can watch the new video and get a glimpse of what to expect from their live shows HERE.
The band comments: “While waiting to finally get back on stage, we are proud to share with you this intense moment from the ‘Antidote’ release party last October at L’Usine, in our home town of Geneva. Jasmines is a very special track which we had the chance to play that night accompanied on piano by our brother, friend and former drummer David. This rare and emotional atmosphere was beautifully captured by Steven Blatter in a single sequence shot across the venue. We love the result and hope you will too. We’re really looking forward to getting back on the road to share moments like this. Unfortunately our European tour that was supposed to start this week had to be cancelled, but we are actively working on rescheduling it later this year. We’ll see you soon, be sure“
‘Antidote’ can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE.
