Heavy metallers IRON MAIDEN have vowed never to follow pals METALLICA’s lead by headlining Glastonbury Festival, according to dailystar.co.uk.
Instead the ‘Run To The Hills’ legends top the bill at this summer’s biggest metal and hard rock extravaganza – Sonisphere – alongside Metallica and The Prodigy.
Straight-talking frontman Bruce Dickinson told me (James Cabooter): “Personally I have no interest in going to Glastonbury.
“In the days when Glasto was an alternative festival it was quite interesting.
“Now it’s the most bourgeois thing on the planet. Anywhere Gwyneth Paltrow goes and you can live in an air-conditioned yurt is not for me.”
The band isn’t impressed by the perceived favouritism and exposure certain mainstream festivals get over others.
“The fact that the BBC sends thousands to film it, whereas they can’t be a***d to turn up to Sonisphere or Download with a camper van and a hand-held says it all to me,” said Bruce.
“We’ll leave the middle classes to do Glastonbury and the rest of the great unwashed will decamp to Knebworth and drink lot of beer and have fun.”
Fun is guaranteed with pilot Bruce planning a special air display before Maiden’s set.
“I had a crazy idea,” the 55-year-old grinned devilishly.
“The last time we did a festival here a Spitfire came out low over the crowd unannounced doing low passes, and the whole place was gobsmacked.
“This year I got involved with the Great War flying display group because I’m the proud owner of a Fokker triplane, which means I get to fly as one of the baddies as it were.
“I just thought why don’t we have a flying display at Sonisphere because it’s the anniversary of the Great War and because we got previous on this.
“We did a song called Paschendale about the slaughter in the trenches. I thought it could be an extraordinary moment, the air full of vintage 1917 aircraft.
“I’ll be dogfighting for 15 minutes. There’s not many events where you can point to the air and say that’s the singer.”
Maiden fans will be able to consume the band’s work on a whole new level too as their very own beer Trooper is the official Sonisphere ale.
“There will be a Trooper field party,” Bruce promised.
“We have a quarter of a million pints to get people through for the show.”
The band’s own beer has been a runaway success and inspired countless other acts from Elbow to Madness to get in on the brewing business.
With infectious enthusiasm Bruce reflected: “We sold five million in the first year. It’s going on for the most successful launch of a British beer ever.
“Of those five million, two and half have been export, so we are doing our bit for the economy. It started out with somebody wanting us to do a red wine.
“I said: ‘Don’t be daft. Iron Maiden red wine? You must be joking.’ It’s nice to drink but we’re an English band so we should be doing English beer.
“So because we don’t do things by halves, we made sure we designed our own, tasted it and came up with something unique. It was enjoyable, and you spend afternoons with the master brewer drinking beer.”
And of course, there will be loud music to boot as well as mainstay Eddie the Head, their mascot.
“Knebworth is one of those hallowed grounds for bands like us,” Maiden’s ringmaster cackled.
“It’s the last show of our Maiden England tour so it will be a great big party. We’ll throw in a few surprises.
“Eddie’s going to love it.”

IRON MAIDEN‘s leader and founder Steve Harris believes Serbia will come out stronger after the disaster the recent floods and wished all those who have suffered from the disaster to return to normal life as soon as possible.
Iron Maiden cannot wait for its concert in Belgrade on June 17 and hopes that the flooded areas will be repaired in the meantime, he noted.
A part of the revenue from the concert of Iron Maiden, but also of Billy Idol on June 25, will go towards repairing the damage from the floods, the organisers of the concert have said.
Iron Maiden will perform in Belgrade as part of their Maiden England tour. Fans from all over the region and across the world are expected at the concert, since this will be the only one in the region of the former Yugoslavia and just one of the several concerts they will hold this year.
We are excited to announce IRON MAIDEN’S TROOPER Premium British beer has just been confirmed as the Official Ale of Sonisphere Festival! The beer is a special batch brewed especially for the festival and as such will be cellar fresh, filtered and served chilled.
Comments Bruce Dickinson, “ Pints of Trooper at Sonisphere will be pretty special because of just how fresh they will be! They will be brewed and transported at the very last minute to ensure that MAIDEN fans get them as close to perfect as they can possibly be. Add in the fact that they will be chilled and this really will be a special festival pint of ale! We’ve also worked on the way it will be served to minimise queues and also give the best pint actually in the glass that we possibly could. We’re really proud to be bringing it to our fans this way and I know we’ll convert some non-ale drinkers too. Ultimately we’re delivering a special beer for the very last show of the MAIDEN ENGLAND Tour. What could be better?”
MAIDEN’s headline show at Sonisphere on Saturday July 5th will be their only UK appearance on the final date of their MAIDEN ENGLAND WORLD TOUR which began in June 2012 and has seen the band play to well over two and a half million fans around the globe. More importantly, MAIDEN ENGLAND is the last of the band’s three retrospective tours covering the 1980’s period and will feature a set list representative of that entire decade. It is therefore very likely that Sonisphere will be the last chance ever to hear some of those early songs performed live so the perfect opportunity to enjoy some TROOPER on this historic occasion!
TROOPER beer celebrates its first anniversary on May 9th 2014 and a staggering five million pints have already been brewed, almost half of which are to fulfil export orders. The beer is a collaboration between IRON MAIDEN and Cheshire family brewer Robinsons and has proved a runaway success from the off. So much so, that Robinsons have just announced a number of new initiatives to cope with the ever-increasing demand, including a ‘TROOPER Tracker’ internet global beer-finder to keep fans updated on where the beer is currently available and a new handy-sized 330ml glass bottle to be sold in pubs, clubs and bars in places where the cask beer isn’t easily accessible. Robinsons have also increased their workforce to ensure the beer gets out as quickly as possible to thirsty TROOPER fans everywhere, something they are able to achieve thanks largely to their brand-new extended capacity brew house which at one point was brewing three batches of TROOPER a day, 6 days a week for the first time ever in the brewery’s 175-year history.
TROOPER is available in the UK as a cask ale and in both a 500ml and 330ml bottle from Robinsons’ award winning Unicorn Brewery in Stockport, Cheshire. There will also be a special, dated & limited IRON MAIDEN Sonisphere plastic bottle available at the festival while stocks last.
TROOPER Premium British beer was personally designed and developed by IRON MAIDEN vocalist Bruce Dickinson alongside Robinsons’ Head Brewer Martyn Weeks.

The world’s longest aircraft has just been unveiled in Britain’s biggest aircraft hangar, according to BBC Transport Correspondent Richard Westcott.
At first, you might mistake it for a giant airship – gas-filled balloon on top, pod slung underneath. But the unique, aerodynamic shape of the balloon – it looks as if a series of cigars have been sewn together – means it can also generate lift just like an aeroplane wing.

Among the project’s high-profile investors is BRUCE DICKINSON. He is one of those people who can’t stop achieving stuff. As if being the lead singer of one of the world’s most successful and enduring rock bands, IRON MAIDEN, was not enough, he is also an airline pilot, businessman, and is investing in this project.
“It’s a game changer, in terms of things we can have in the air and things we can do,” he says. “The airship has always been with us, it’s just been waiting for the technology to catch up.”
He wants to sell them and he’ll be very good at it. As we chat in the hangar, he goes through its credentials.
It is 70% greener than a cargo plane, he says. It doesn’t need a runway, just two crew. And it can plonk 50 tonnes anywhere in the world you like, which is 50 times more than a helicopter. He wants to drum up publicity with the kind of trip Richard Branson would dream up. A non-stop flight around the world – twice.
“It seizes my imagination. I want to get in this thing and fly it pole to pole,” says Dickinson. “We’ll fly over the Amazon at 20ft, over some of the world’s greatest cities and stream the whole thing on the internet.”
