Cyrus Aman of The Auburn Reporter recently interviewed Derek Riggs, the creator and man responsible for IRON MAIDEN‘s mascot Eddie.
Riggs, a 55-year-old English artist who now resides in California, was the band’s main artist in the 1980s, creating the artwork for every Iron Maiden album released in that decade. An excerpt from their chat follows:
Riggs said his first inspiration as an artist came courtesy of comic book artists.
“I didn’t really follow comics in particular, I’d follow the artists. Stan Lee [creator and writer for Marvel Comics] thinks it’s all about him, but it really isn’t,” Riggs said. “It was all about the artists. I was always a big fan of Jack Kirby. I went through a little phase of liking Neal Adams, but I got bored with that because it’s a bit too realistic. I feel that comics should be stylized, because of their nature, and Jack Kirby just did it.”
Powerslave, (Iron Maiden’s fifth studio album) depicts ancient Egyptians marching a sarcophagus into a statue of an Egyptian-God Eddie; a super-detailed illustration.
“[They told me] ‘We’ve got this Egyptian thing and we want Eddie as part of a pyramid,’ or something, and Steve Harris had this 18th century engraving of some guy dragging the head of Rameses,” Riggs said. “And he thought he wanted Eddie’s head on there, that was his idea. So copyrights are not even in this [laughs]. So I sort of took the Egyptian idea and I started drawing. I did it on A3 layout paper. A3 is a European paper size. I used a layout pad. It’s like tracing paper, but it’s cheaper and it’s thinner so that you can draw a picture, and then you can drop the next page over the top of it, and trace the good bits and improve it. So I had one of those, and I was sitting there drawing, and I drew the pyramid bit then I need a bit on the sides so I had to tape the pages together and then I stuck bits on the top and bottom as well. When I finished, it was about five foot square and it was all taped together.”
“So I took it to Rod Smallwood (the band’s manager) and I held it up in front of him and said; ‘Look, I’ve drawn this.’ and he said ‘Alright then, go and paint it. That’s good.'” Riggs continued. “I had to draw it bigger than usual: twenty-three inches by thirty-two. It was on board. I used to paint on illustration board and that was the biggest piece of board I could get, and I still had trouble projecting that image into that space, if you can kind of see what I mean: My mind puts it in 360 degrees and my picture is about 10 degrees [laughs].”

Iron Maiden teamed up with Cheshire family brewers Robinsons to create a new beer, Trooper earlier this year. Real ale fan and history aficionado Bruce Dickinson, Maiden’s vocalist, played a major role in developing the unique flavour of the beer, entailing ongoing visits to Robinson’s brewery in Stockport. Dickinson’s on-stage Union Jack flag-waving military character is an iconic element of the band’s live concerts and ‘The Trooper’, written by bassist Steve Harris, is one of Maiden’s most popular songs and one of the highlights of any Maiden show.

According to Thetelegraphandargus.co.uk, Bradford-based supermarket giant Morrisons has seen its sales of real ale rise thanks to an unlikely source – heavy metal titans Iron Maiden.

In June it became the only supermarket to stock Robinsons Brewery’s Trooper Ale, inspired by the band and brewed in conjunction with their lead singer Bruce Dickinson. Supermarket bosses say sales of the ale have been “phenomenal” and it is their fastest-ever selling newly launched ale. Sales have exceeded expectations tenfold and photographs of the bottle on store shelves have been widely spread on social media.
Robinsons Brewery unveiled the drink in May and with the backing of Morrisons it has now sold over a million pints – six months faster than the brewery expected. The ale takes its name from the band’s classic 1984 single The Trooper and the bottle features the same image as that release – band mascot Eddie taking part in the charge of the light brigade. The beer has the history of the 1884 battle on the back of each bottle.
Mark Land, Morrisons’ ales buyer said: “Trooper has been phenomenally successful since Morissons launched it in June. “The bottle’s label has definitely been a huge factor in its success, as has the push our stores have given it.”

Former IRON MAIDEN singer Paul Di’Anno‘s previously announced U.S. tour, which was originally scheduled to kick off in January, was then postponed until May/June, and then pushed back to the end of the year, has now officially been canceled due to issues with the tour’s promoter. Di’Anno states: “My apologies to the American fans who have been let down and to the various promoters who got so badly burnt in this way.”
Di’Anno completed his first North American tour in early 2010, 17 years after he was deported following a prison term for guns and drug offenses.
On August 27, 2011, Di’Anno played his first show since serving time in a U.K. prison after he falsely collected U.K. government benefits by claiming he suffered nerve damage to his back that prevented him from working.
Due to a number of health issues, including a knee problem which will require surgery soon, Di’Anno announced in July 2012 that he would stop touring in 2013.
Michael Salenius, Di’Anno‘s Swedish booking manager and tour manager, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that 2013 would be “a big, fantastic” last touring year for Paul, with a lot of solo shows, festival appearances and Di’Anno vs. Blaze Bayley concerts. You will also see various guest musicians joining Paul on stage.”
Fan-filmed video footage of Paul Di’Anno‘s July 10 performance at Lilla Torg in Malmö, Sweden can be seen below.
Di’Anno recorded two classic albums with IRON MAIDEN before being fired and replaced by Bruce Dickinson. He went on to front a number of other bands, including KILLERS and BATTLEZONE, and released several solo records.
