A t-shirt currently being sold by Gap — the American clothing and accessories retailer based in San Francisco, California — bears more than a passing resemblance to the cover artwork of the classic JUDAS PRIEST album “Screaming For Vengeance”.
Guitarist Bill Kelliher of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON was the first to point out the similarities between the two designs, writing on his Instagram feed, “Leave it to the Gap to steal ideas for kid T-shirts. Seriously poor taste.”
The Gap design and the “Screaming For Vengeance” t-shirt can be seen below in a side-by-side comparison.
JUDAS PRIEST‘s eighth studio album, “Screaming For Vengeance”, will be released as a special 30th-anniversary edition on September 4 (one day earlier internationally) via Sony Music. The set will contain not only the remastered original album plus bonus tracks, but also a live DVD from the 1983 US Festival show, filmed in San Bernadino, California on May 29, 1983.
JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford has weighed in on the Chick-fil-A controversy, insisting that both the supporters and the critics of the chicken eatery’s chief executive and his views on gay marriage are perfectly within their rights to make their opinions known.
When asked about his thoughts on gay marriage in a radio interview in late July, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy stated: “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”
Speaking to AOL‘s Noisecreep, the openly gay Halford about his thoughts on the Chick-fil-A scandal that is all over the media right now.
“Before I get into this, I just want to say that I love America. I love the American Constitution and the First Amendment,” Halford said. “I’m actually watching a PBS documentary that I got on DVD about the life of John Adams. If you really get into the heart and soul of this great country, it’s all about the constitution and the First Amendment and freedom of speech.”
He continued, “Everybody in this country has the right to say what they think and feel and what best represents them. The people at Chick-fil-A have the absolute right to say and do what they want. It doesn’t matter that all of these people disagree with their opinion. The question was how would the people that agree with what that man said do to support the company and how would the ones against his anti-gay remarks protest.
“The supporters have been showing up in droves, to spend money at the restaurants and peacefully assemble. But there has obviously been so many people who have gone out and boycotted the company. I think it’s great. That’s our right here. What you’re seeing here are the elements of the American Constitution in all of their glory. It’s a wonderful thing to see happening and talk about and the fact that everyone is discussing the gay-rights issue is great.”
Halford concluded: “I don’t think that man thought too much about the business consequences of what he said, but I think he was standing for what he believes in. I don’t agree with him at all, but God bless the man. It’s as simple as that.”
JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford recently spoke to Billboard.com about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band’s follow-up to their 2008 concept album “Nostradamus”.
According to Halford, “a tremendous amount of material” has already been accumulated for the new CD, with the band currently “ramping things up to get back into full writing and recording mode” in England.
PRIEST‘s forthcoming album will mark the recording and songwriting debut of the band’s new guitarist, Richie Faulkner, who replaced co-founder K.K. Downing in 2011.
“As we were proceeding on this world tour, [Richie] was taking this little mini-studio into his dressing room and we could hear him riffing away,” Halford said. “It’s going to be really thrilling moment to get together in a new writing dimension, Glenn [Tipton] and myself and Richie, putting all of these ideas together. We’ll see what we can do over the next couple of months, look at everything, lay it all out and then start the hard work of picking out the best material.”
Although Halford is hopeful that PRIEST will release some of its new music next year, “I’m of the attitude it’ll be ready when it’s ready,” he explained. “I don’t think we’re going to slack off. We’re determined to do a lot of work and be just as dedicated as we’ve always been and take a lot of care and attention with all the songs. We’re not going to just bang this one out, so to speak.”
In a November 2011 interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Halford stated about PRIEST‘s plans for the upcoming album, “Glenn and I started to write in the early part of January [of 2011]. We just went to it from the heart really, there was no specific agenda or idea, as opposed to what we had to do with ‘Nostradamus’, which was very focused and a real anchor of a project. This one has just been some straight-forward, classic British heavy metal. Some of it feels a bit like ‘Painkiller’, some of it feels like ‘Sad Wings Of Destiny’, some like ‘British Steel’. We didn’t do much research, we didn’t bother checking some of our previous releases, we didn’t do any homework, we just sat down and played, you know? Glenn came up with riffs and I came up with vocal melodies. There was no outside influence or interference in the writing sessions. We just started the day, plugged in some amps, got the mic up and made the metal that way. It’s a very pure record, in that respect.”
JUDAS PRIEST played the final show of its “Epitaph” world tour on May 26 at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, England. The sold-out concert was professionally filmed for a 2013 DVD release.
Honda has chosen JUDAS PRIEST‘s classic 1982 track “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'” for its new campaign dubbed the “Honda Summer Clearance Event.” You can check out the 30-second commercial below.
Back in 2010, Honda used another PRIEST song, “The Hellion”, in a commercial for its redesigned 2011 Odyssey minivan. The 30-second spot featured a young, ex-rocker dad and an iconic Marshall amp.
Both “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'” and “The Hellion” come off PRIEST‘s classic eighth studio album, “Screaming For Vengeance”, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Released on July 17, 1982 — with a remastered CD version released in May of 2001 — it remains the top selling release of JUDAS PRIEST‘s career.
Former PRIEST guitarist Kenneth “K.K.” Downing‘s official web site, Steel Mill, earlier this week posted a new blog from K.K. on the recording, impact and legacy of “Screaming For Vengeance”. Check it out at this location.
On how “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'” came together, Downing said, “As it happened, I seem to remember that we were quite happy with the album but decided late on that we could add one more song. I know we had some of the parts but we set about completing ‘Another Thing Comin” during the mixing sessions at Bee Jay studios. It came together quite quickly, and I seem to remember that we all had a good feeling about it as it did sound like a good driving song and possibly a good radio track.”
Peter Hodgson of Gibson.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Richie Faulkner of British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Gibson.com: You’ve been in JUDAS PRIEST for over a year now and the fans seem to have welcomed you with open arms. How does that feel? Were you worried about how you’d be accepted?
Richie: I think that any big change in such a legendary band is going to bring a certain amount of skepticism and when people don’t know the outcome, we tend to fear the worst. The band and me were sure that when the fans came to see us live, all fears would be put to bed. It astonishes, really, how the fans have welcomed me into the family and I feel honored to be accepted in the way that I have been. The great thing is, even though the fans didn’t know how it was gonna be at first, they still believed in the band, got their tickets and came to see the show. When the opening song kicked in, all politics and uncertainty seemed to be blown out the door and everyone was just part of a huge family, ya know? Hats off to the fans for that and a massive thank you.
Gibson.com: How much lead-up did you have between getting the PRIEST gig and stepping on stage with them?
Richie: It was about a month before rehearsals started for the “Epitaph” tour that I got the gig. We rehearsed for two weeks and then flew out to L.A. to play on the finale of “American Idol”. So my first show with the band was in front of nearly 30 million people! No pressure then guys, eh?! We then flew back to England again to continue rehearsing, so I think it was about two months in total before we played the first show of the “Epitaph” tour.
Gibson.com: Are you writing new material with PRIEST? And are you able to fit in your own musical pursuits at the moment?
Richie: We are working on a new album. Glenn [Tipton, guitar] and Rob [Halford, vocals] started writing material early 2011 before I joined the band, and I got together with them earlier this year to work on some more tracks with them. We’re getting together again after the summer to do some more writing and if all goes to plan, we might have the album out early next year. The ideas we have so far are sounding very strong and very PRIEST, so watch this space!
