KARYN CRISIS’ GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES are now streaming the entirety of their new album “Covenant” via PureGrainAudio. The album is released today, on October 25th, via Aural Music.
Karyn commented “Covenant is about the chthonic and celestial realms of the divine feminine, about liminal spaces where goddesses pull people deep into the earth’s fire, into astral travel and dreamy places to be bestowed sacred knowledge upon those who feel outcast, marginalized and unseen. A ‘Covenant’ is a type of devotion, an agreement with a larger force. In keeping with our first album, Covenant is charged music, ritualistic, and it is made through the process of channeling.”
KARYN CRISIS’ GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES have released a new video for “The Ascent”, so repare to take a journey into the ancient rites of incarnation, watch it below.
This track is taken from the latest album, “Salem’s Wounds”, out via Century Media Records, which features occult metal soundscapes that seamlessly soar from evil heaviness to ambient romanticism through soul provoking passages of light and darkness. The release is described as “…one of the more unique albums that will come across your stereo for quite some time,” by Metal Insider.net.
On the nature of “The Ascent” specifically and the release of the new video, Karyn Crisis comments: “The Ascent is about the transformative ancient rite of Death and Resurrection. It also alludes to the wisdom attained through attuning to the nature of energies which often appear to us as illusions of opposites. To be incarnated again we must first go through the death transition; we must enter the darkness to find the light; to hear the voice of the Universe we must go within, turning attention away from the physical world. Opposites are merely halves of a whole: masculine and feminine energies, the macrocosm and the microcosm, life and death. In pen and ink I drew a storyboard of the video that I sent to Bob Vigna, who filmed and edited the entire video. I explained to him I wanted to depict this rite of dying unto oneself, represented by the Hanged Man Tarot card. For our story, I felt it was important to have the male Druids taking action in the first part of the story which is about a seeker in the physical world, and for the female Priestesses to complete the creative inward rebirthing process.
I was inspired by a story authored by Carlo Napolitano where a character seeking answers to the Great Mysteries was hung upside down on a tree, with a mask tied to his face, gaining a previously unknown view of the world around him as pagan rituals took place around him. Bob elevated these ideas and turned them into a cohesive storyline that’s both tangible and earthly, dreamy and spiritual.”
Karyn Crisis — best known for her trademark melodic singing and growling roars as the vocalist of CRISIS (1993-2006) and EPHEL DUATH (2011-2014) — will return with a new project, KARYN CRISIS’ GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES, and consequent album, Salem’s Wounds, this Spring. Due out March 9th in Europe and March 24th in North America via Century Media Records, Salem’s Wounds contains 13 tracks recorded by Karyn together with Davide Tiso (EPHEL DUATH), Ross Dolan (IMMOLATION), Mike Hill (TOMBS) and Charlie Schmid (VAURA). A new video for the album track, “The Alchemist”, can now be viewed below:
Karyn Crisis comments: “I’m thrilled to release a new track off our forthcoming album entitled ‘The Alchemist,’ which is one of my favorite songs. While we’ve mostly released images and video clips full of atmosphere around the concept of this album, I felt that now is the perfect time for you to meet the band. We’ve all been rehearsing in preparation for our upcoming March shows, and we’ve been making a lot of magic in that rehearsal space, and have filled it with our hearts and souls. Bob Vigna of IMMOLATION filmed and edited this video. Enjoy the vibes and meet the band: Davide Tiso guitars, Bob Vigna guitars, Ross Dolan bass and vocals, Charlie Schmid drums, and Karyn Crisis vocals.”

KARYN CRISIS — best known for her trademark melodic singing and growling roars as the vocalist of CRISIS (1993-2006) and EPHEL DUATH (2011-2014) – is a multi-layered artist, who in addition to her vocal talents, has already established herself as a respected painter, leatherworker and more, states Century Media.
Most recently, Karyn announced that she will contribute a written piece, entitled “Angels In The Ashes”, to The Healing Monsters benefit anthology for Dustin LaValley and Katherine Ludwig. Metal Maniacs co-founder and former editor, Katherine Ludwig, has been battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and dark fiction writer, screenwriter, and metal/hardcore enthusiast, Dustin LaValley, has been struggling with Crohn’s/IBD issues; all proceeds from The Healing Monsters (above production) will be split evenly between LaValley’s and Ludwig’s respective medical funds.
In regards to her contribution to this collection of metal-horror poetry and prose, Karyn comments: “When Shawn Macomber asked me to contribute something to Katherine Ludwig’s cause, I was honored and thrilled to give something back to a woman who’s given so much to the Metal music community. I consider that each action we take sends out a resonance, so with my piece I made an offering of strength to a woman who already symbolizes that very idea to many other people…
‘Angels In the Ashes’ is based around a stanza I wrote when I was 15 years old, as I was ruminating on the limitations of the physical body while I struggled with my own disease. In adulthood, I’ve perceived that within my greatest personal weakness can be found my deepest strength, simply trying to draw my attention into myself where it lay dormant, awaiting our reunion.”
Shawn Macomber, co-editor of The Healing Monsters and contributor to Decibel Magazine, Fangoria, Rue Morgue, etc., adds:
“I’ve been a fan of Karyn Crisis’ vision and music for nearly twenty years now, so when Kriscinda over at Despumation first gave The Healing Monsters the green-light, Karyn was high on my ‘reach’ list of contributors. I mean, we’re talking about a singular, fearless artist imbued with a very real, very potent vitality and power — if that’s not the sort of individual you’d want standing alongside you while attempting to in some small way confront the forces of darkness and disease, I don’t know who is. Anyway, to my great surprise and elation, Karyn was eager to help and her poem was predictably wonderful. That this anthology will arrive roundabout the same time she once again demolishes expectations and boundaries via the stunning new album ‘Salem’s Wounds’ is merely coincidence, though a happy one!”

Century Media Records have announced the signing of Karyn Crisis‘ GOSPEL OF WITCHES:
KARYN CRISIS is a name worthy of more praise and attention. While select circles of people know and appreciate her prior vocals with the critically-acclaimed CRISIS from 1993-2006, many are still naive to her influence and impact. This demure girl raged harder than many men, slugging it out with impactful live performances at hardcore and metal shows, screaming often times like a demon, other times singing like an angel. She led the way and has become an influence for female-fronted extreme bands. And then she disappeared. In the interim she made a name for herself as an artisan via her paintings and leatherwork, and now she’s returned with a stellar new project, KARYN CRISIS’ GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES, and a fabulous new album to be released next year through Century Media Records.
“This band began 5 years ago in Tuscany, Italy, as an alchemical journey between Davide Tiso (EPHEL DUATH) and myself as we searched for a way to musically honor the Witches who came before me and who have been guiding me in Spirit, teaching me their Ancient Ways,” explains Karyn.
The album was financed by fans via websites like Kickstarter and Etsy; then Karyn together with Davide Tiso, Ross Dolan (IMMOLATION), Mike Hill (TOMBS) and Charlie Schmid (VAURA) recorded the 13 songs at The Basement Recordings in North Carolina with producer Jamie King (BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, THE CONTORTIONIST).
Upon completion of the album, Karyn began shopping the album and reconnected with Century Media President Marco Barbieri, who had signed CRISIS back in 1993 when he worked at Metal Blade Records. “In my opinion, Karyn is a true renaissance artist and I am intrigued by anything she puts her touch on,” explains Barbieri. “She remains an undeniable icon in the annals of hardcore and metal with her vocal and live performances, and I am pleased that she has been re-infected by the muse and is sharing her undeniable talents again for longtime fans as well as a new generation. GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES is not CRISIS; it has her fingerprint all over it, lending an ear to early influences, but here she and her band take the listener on all sorts of new journeys and adventures musically, vocally and emotionally. I am proud to be working with Karyn again.”
In closing, Karyn states, “I’m so excited to announce that I’ve signed a worldwide deal for my new band, KARYN CRISIS’ GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES, to Century Media. Working out this new partnership is a testament to the enduring connections my art and voice have made throughout the years with industry people and fans who’ve continued to support me and encourage me to keep singing.”
