Bay Area metal icons MACHINE HEAD have released ‘Civil Unrest’, a 2-song digital single, featuring A-side, ‘Stop The Bleeding’ and B-side, ‘Bulletproof’, with the former featuring additional guest vocals from KILLSWITCH ENGAGE frontman, Jesse Leach. This pair of fierce protest anthems were both written days after the back-to-back murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. They are not for the faint of heart.

The gritty performance video was directed and edited by Mike Sloat, shot on location on the streets of Oakland, CA, with Jesse’s part filmed in Kingston, NY with David Brodsky.

Vocalist / guitarist Robb Flynn shares the inspiration behind the release: “I wrote and sang the lyrics on Wednesday May 27th 2020, the day that the four officers who murdered George Floyd were (originally) not charged with anything. This day was engulfed in protests and riots across America. I drove into Oakland, past large demonstrations already happening and in a fury wrote down everything I was feeling after watching the horrific footage. Within hours, what I wanted to say, what I needed to say had been recorded in the song.”
“I decided to sing it over a song called ‘Stop The Bleeding’, that we had recorded back in December. 2018 with Jared [MacEachearn, MACHINE HEAD bass guitar] and Carlos Cruz [Warbringer] on drums.
‘Stop The Bleeding’ features a guest appearance from KILLSWITCH ENGAGE frontman, Jesse Leach, seeing Flynn and Leach trading lyrical lines that spit anger and frustration at current events.
Flynn continues, “I had been speaking with Jesse for maybe 6 months about singing on the song, as it always had a little bit of a Killswitch vibe to me. Unfortunately (or fortunately), our schedules hadn’t lined up, but with the subsequent lockdown from coronavirus, we had time to make it work. After what happened to George Floyd, I sent him the lyrics I’d written and he replied saying he was “100% on board”. Jesse is someone I consider to be a pioneer and in many ways, one of the men who changed the face of metal. His contribution to this song made it extremely powerful and it’s an honor to have him be a part of it.”
Jesse Leach mirrors the sentiment, stating,“Being asked to be part of this song is an honor. Yes, because it’s Machine Head, but more importantly, this is a message that needs to be heard and spread. These issues concerning abuses of power and racism are timeless. I have written about these previously and I’ll write about them again. I think Robb really nailed this one, both lyrically and sonically. My hope is this song helps awaken those who hear it. Robb has been a frequent voice of the voiceless in these times, so teaming up with him is a no brainer. We need more of our Metal Community to speak out on social issues and help raise awareness, especially during these crucial times. Music is the soundtrack to our lives, it transcends language and culture. This is the reason we as musicians need to do our part to spark thought and discussion on these types of issues. We can make a difference through music and we can help stop the bleeding.”
MACHINE HEAD are donating a significant portion of their streaming proceeds from ‘Stop The Bleeding’ to http://grassrootslaw.org, the organization representing George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.
The B-side, ‘Bulletproof’ is a new song, also recorded with Carlos and Jared back in December 2018. Flynn adds, “The lyrics for ‘Bulletproof’ were finished in the aftermath of not only the Ahmaud Arbery murder at the hands of white supremacist, but everything twisting out of control in our World. The isolation and craziness of the pandemic, the lockdown protesters storming government buildings with AR-15‘s, as well as the blatant lies and conspiracies pouring out of our political leaders mouths, hour by hour, day after day.”
The songs needed something visually provocative as ‘sleeve artwork’, so the band looked to longtime collaborator Strephon Taylor who hand illustrated various elements from this moment in time, to make a powerful statement about America and the World.
Both tracks were produced by Robb Flynn (Machine Head, Roadrunner United, Sworn Enemy, Dress The Dead) and engineered by Zack Ohren at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, CA, with the devastating mix being handled by long-time MACHINE HEAD collaborator and producer extraordinaire, Colin Richardson, together with Chris Clancy at Audioworks Productions UK. The tracks were mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound.
STOP THE BLEEDING lyrics
The endless scroll of human tragedy
I swipe along as the days go by
Another brother murdered out in the streets
I connect to the shame, we don’t know what it’s like
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE have released a live performance video of an acoustic version of the song “We Carry On”. The track was recorded while the members were in quarantine. The original appears on the band’s 2016-released album Incarnate.
Watch + listen here:
As Adam D. says in the intro of the video, the band had planned to perform this song during the now-postponed Spring 2020 Atonement Tour, featuring August Burns Red and Light The Torch. The tour was paused after only a few shows in March due to the COVID-19 shutdown. The rescheduled dates will be announced soon.
“This song is a deep one for me,” explains Leach. “When I wrote the lyrics, it was originally based off of struggles in a tumultuous, abusive relationship. Little did I know how significant it would eventually be as it has relevance during this strange time of quarantine and uncertainty. For me, it has turned into an anthem, of sorts, about perseverance. While working on this version, it really struck me how much I felt the lyrics in a different light. As dark and difficult as things can get, we all have this inner power to persevere and pull through. I feel that the desperation and the melancholy of this song are balanced by a ray of hope that runs through it all.”
The band has also created Killswitch Engage-branded face masks for fans, which are available on their web store at this location: killswitchengage.merchcentral.com
All profits from sales of these face masks will be donated to NIVA (National Independent Venue Association). The organization is working to help preserve independent venues across the country that are struggling during the COVID-19 crisis. Learn more about their efforts here: saveourstages.com
“We decided that it’s a good opportunity to bring some awareness and support to an important non-profit organization called NIVA,” Leach explains. “All of us started out in small ‘Mom and Pop’ venues and it would be an absolute shame to see some of these venues go away due to this crisis. I still frequent small clubs when I am home to see shows and stay in touch with the local scenes. Independent venues are the backbone of creativity, art, and music.”
He finishes, “When this is all said and done, I am certain people will be clamoring to see live music. I know I will! So where would we be if these venues go belly up due to lack of support and funding?!”
Earlier this month, Killswitch Engage dropped Atonement II B-Sides For Charity, with 100% of the proceeds donated to the COVID-19 Relief Fund for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (disasterphilanthropy.org). The B-sides have raised over $40,000 for the cause thus far.
The release features six songs from the recording sessions for Killswitch Engage‘s 2019-released and Grammy-nominated album Atonement, out now via Metal Blade Records. The track-listing is below.

Atonement II B-Sides For Charity will go live at all other DSPs on May 8th. The track-listing is below.
“These songs didn’t make the final cut for ‘Atonement‘,” says Leach. “Choosing which songs make an album remains a tough process for me. While the songs that made the most sense appear on the album, I’m still attached to every song I write. So, when the idea came up to put these B-Sides out and donate funds to a charity, I was relieved at the idea and the band unanimously agreed to the cause. I am proud these songs get to see a release, and to help others in the process is a huge bonus.”
He continues, “These songs were written during a very difficult and uncertain time of my life. They are written with two perspectives: that of a struggling, angry, frustrated man having a crisis of faith, life, and love and a man finding the will and the strength to change perspective, try again, and to fight through it all. Although these songs may not have made the cut for the album, they are deeply meaningful songs that I believe in whole heartedly. Lyrically, they are some of my favorites that I have written. From the very personal ‘Hollow Convictions,’ ‘No Devotion,’ and ‘I Feel Alive Again,’ to the battle cry songs of ‘Killing of Leviathan,’ ‘Prophets of Treason,’ and ‘The Great Beyond,’ it tells the story of my journey and my view of the world around me.”
The singer finishes, “Big thanks to Metal Blade for partnering up with us on this! Also thank you to Center for Disaster Philanthropy for their amazing work! Lastly, thanks to all of you for purchasing the songs and contributing to helping those who are in desperate need during these uncertain times.”

Gold-certified hard rock heavyweights KILLSWITCH ENGAGE received a 2020 GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of Best Metal Performance for their song “Unleashed”. This marks the Massachusetts band’s third nomination to date.
The 62nd Annual GRAMMY® Awards air on CBS Sunday January 26, 2020.
“Unleashed” remains a standout from the group’s eighth full-length and debut for Metal Blade Records – Atonement. All Music described the album as “the best-sounding record in the band’s catalog, bridging modern studio techniques with early-2000s ones,” while Consequence of Sound praised the band for continuing to “deliver brutal compositions that hook listeners in with thrilling musicianship.” Loudwire deemed the record a “high mark in the Killswitch Engage catalog and easily the metalcore icons’ most dynamic release yet.” MetalSucks summed it up best, saying, “There’s a reason Killswitch Engage have survived when many of their peers tripped over their ear gauges and fell by the wayside. They’re just really damn good at what they do,” while Exclaim! enthused that Atonement is full of “material so killer that nobody could ever doubt them.”
Killswitch Engage, who were recently recognized by Forbes as “one of modern metal’s most cherished acts,” will remain on the road deep into next year. Grammy-nominated and Gold-selling hard rock heavyweights Killswitch Engage have just released the video for the song “The Signal Fire” from their new album Atonement, out now via Metal Blade Records. Current and former KsE singers Jesse Leach and Howard Jones trade vocals in this simple but electrifying performance clip.
Watch the video, directed by the band’s longtime collaborator Ian McFarland (The Godfathers of Hardcore, Meshuggah), here:
“This video is a demonstration of solidarity and unity,” says Leach. “This is for the fans and this is our testimony to all who see this video. In these times we live in, I believe this is an important message – not just for us as a band and our fans but for all of humanity. This is a call for compassion and understanding! There is strength in unity.”
Leach continues, “The making of the video was a great experience as well. Just all of us guys hanging out and having fun together. Ian McFarland did a hell of a job capturing the vibe and energy of our performances.”
“It was another silly day at the office,” says Jones. “Good food, lots of wrestling talk, and hanging with the boys is a great way to spend the day and get a little work done. Shout out to Ian McFarland for making everything painless at the shoot. The day was all smiles – with a hint of metal.”
