Finnish Folk Metal Superstars KORPIKLAANI‘s new album Jylhä is out now! In celebration of the release of their 11th full-length the band have produced another gorgeous music video for the song Tuuleton.
PLEASE NOTE: The LP editions will be released on March 12th!
THE MEANING OF TUULETON (“THE WINDLESS”): “A bird-themed story where Windless is an almost flightless bird. He groans when he flies, but it’s not good to be on the ground either. He mourns his inability to fly like the others and is bitter because he is not accepted by the others just because he’s different. Winter is coming and when the nightly frosts arrive it becomes increasingly difficult to survive in the cold ground.”
DIRECTOR’S WORD: “All of the music videos from the album “Jylhä” are made during the Covid-19 pandemic, and I wanted that to show somehow in this last story. Years have passed and the old man now lives in his hut with his grown-up daughter. Age starts to weigh, he feels feeble and dejected. On top of this he has caught some disease from one of his trips, and his time seems to be running out. The disease makes his mind wander, leading him to his deceased wife and her marshy grave, to landscapes already familiar from the “Leväluhta”-video. But will it be his time to go…?”(Markku Kirves)
With only 4 weeks remaining until the release of their 11th studio album Jylhä, Finnish Folk Metal Superstars KORPIKLAANI are happy to present another new song to their fans. Niemi is a fast paced and catchy neckbreaker which is reminiscent of the band’s heavier past, and it will be accompanied by a good old fashioned performance video that showcases KORPIKLAANI at what they do best.
This is what frontman Jonne has to say about Niemi : “Niemi was one of the first songs for this album. I had a feeling after ‘Kulkija’, that a next album could be the fastest and hardest ever in Korpiklaani’s history. I looked at my Flying V, picked it up and here we are!”
The meaning of Niemi (“The Cape”): “Lake Bodom 1960, “Bloody Pentecost”. Four youngsters, Irmeli Björklund, Anja Mäki, Seppo Boisman, and Nils Gustafsson were the target of a murderer on their camping trip. The sole survivor was Nils Gustafsson, who was badly injured. The summery triple murder on the lake side shocked the whole of Finland. In the story, the narrator is on a meadow near the lake spending a summer morning, when the surroundings come alive and the narrator hears the call “Come to the end of the cape, terrible things have happened”. Everyone who heard the call quickly heads towards the murder cape. The story is carried by stagnant time and the momentary nature portraits. The murders of Lake Bodom remain unsolved.”
Director’s Word: “In this video I just wanted to capture the band’s insane energy on stage. So here’s Korpiklaani with cold & fire, smoke & leather!” (Markku Kirves)
Finnish Folk Metal Superstars KORPIKLAANI have released another single from their forthcoming album “Jylhä” (out February 5th, 2021 on NUCLEAR BLAST). The melodic and undeniably catchy song “Sanaton maa” is again accompanied by a darkly atmospheric & folklore-laden music video featuring actor Yrjänä Ermala in a lead role.
Accordion player Sami Perttula comments: ““Sanaton maa” is meant to be a throwback to the 80’s with a folky twist: I wanted to write a classic sounding mid-tempo hair metal song with a killer chorus that includes all the elements I like to hear in a good song. While listening to this I can travel back in time on the back seat of an old Honda Accord that was cosmetically fixed with way too much putty and barely worked….on the other hand that didn’t matter because it was also tuned with woofers more expensive than the car. Happy ending!”
Singer “Jonne Järvelä” chimes in: “All I needed to do after that was add fuzzy dice to it!”
Video director Markku Kirves adds: ““Sanaton maa” is the third KORPIKLAANI video with the same main character and this time I wanted to tell something about his profession. In this video we see a blacksmith with his young apprentice, to whom he is now passing his knowledge. On the way to the smith, the boy sees something stunning under the water. As a warning, man decides to tell him an old legend about what happened at the same spot a long time ago. But does our apprentice really listen…?”
The story behind “Sanaton maa”: “Folklore tells a story of a young man named Matti plowing a field along a river. When finished, he took the horse to the pen walking past the bathing spot on the river. The men on the other side of the river were making hay and at the same time heard a voice from the water saying “Time has passed but no man has come”. Matti, having not heard the voice, decided to go swimming. Men on the other side told him he shouldn’t because they had heard such a voice. They said a man from the village had drowned in that place a long time ago. Matti replied that he was not going to swim after all, but was at least going to wash his hands and face. He leaned towards the water, had a heart attack and sank into the water. The legend is known at least in Kaukola and Valkeala.”
Finnish folk metal superstars KORPIKLAANI have announced their new studio album ”Jylhä” (Majestic), to be released on February 5th via Nuclear Blast Records.
“Jylhä” (which has no direct meaning, can be described as Majestic and it can also be described as wild, rugged in a strong beautiful way) will be available as digital album, CD, black vinyl and grass green vinyl [limited to 300 pieces]. The pre-order will start soon.
In celebration of the happy news, the band has released a music video for the first single ‘Leväluhta’ today that you can watch here:
Korpiklaani are unique. Their blend of Finnish folk music and heavy metal is like no other. Like traditional folk music that tells tales of joy, heartbreak and stories of old, Korpiklaani brings new life to these tales adding the high energy of rock ‘n roll and heavy metal. What you hear on record is what you hear live; authentic, honest and a lot of fun. Korpiklaani is a natural representation of our journey in this life, bringing music and emotions that can have you dancing all night, to quiet moments of melancholy.
Jylhä continues this journey with a collection of tales of folklore, nature, celebration and three stories of murder, including the infamous Lake Bodom murders.
Singer Jonne states: “”Jylhä” is not just a battering heavy metal record, it’s also our most volatile full-length album to date. For example, some of the new songs feature energetic punk rock influences and there are even some audible laid-back reggae-rhythms, like our first single, Leväluhta.”
Leväluhta (or Levänluhta) is a spring in Isokyrö. The remains of approximately a hundred Iron Age bodies have been found buried there, and it remains unclear why the deceased were laid to rest in the spring. In the story, the narrator himself is one of the buried, floating in the lap of clear water beyond time and knowledge. The video tells us a fictional story about what may have happened in the mystical Leväluhta…

KORPIKLAANI, Partawa and Mad Viking Finland, a charity supporting club of bearded men, have created a beard oil in collaboration. It will be sold as a limited edition of 2000 bottles. Of the price of each sold bottle, 5€ will be given to SYLVA, a charity that supports children and youth fighting cancer.
The CEO of Partawa, Mika Poikonen, is very happy with the new oil. “The oil is called Korven Kyynel (Tear of the Wilderness). It has the scent of an evergreen tree and it’s straight from the “Eyes of the Forest” like a song with almost the same name by Korpiklaani. The beard oil was made in Finland and all of its ingredients are completely natural. Korven Kyynel treats the beard and the skin, and helps children and youth who are sick with cancer.”
Partawa and Mad Viking Finland began charity activities last year via band collaboration with TURMION KÄTILÖT. Their product was a beard oil called Viimeinen voitelu (Extreme Unction). “When we asked Korpiklaani to join us this year, they said yes right away. And while Turmion Kätilöt was a great band, with Korpiklaani we have to take internationality into account” tells Sami Orava, the chairman of Mad Viking Finland.
According to Jonne Järvelä, the singer/guitarist of KORPIKLAANI, picking the charity was easy. “It was easy agreeing to join the beard oil project of Partawa and Mad Viking Finland. The number of beards in our band is quite big, so we are going to need the product too, along with the scent of the wilderness, of course! Picking the charity was easy as well because cancer took away my grandparents, and last year also my uncle and the sister of my mother-in-law. Cancer has a tendency to cut the victim’s life short and I can only imagine how horrible it is for a family when a child gets sick with it. That’s why we wanted to donate the proceeds to fight cancer of children and youth”
When cancer touches the life of a family, the patients and their loved one’s lives change suddenly and unexpectedly. Sylva helps them to handle the crisis, cope with the disease and move onward in the difficult situation. “Everybody needs somebody to walk beside them at some point, somebody who sticks by them when things get hard. Also Sylva needs supporters – people to walk with us – because we finance our activities mainly with donated funds. We are very grateful for the cooperation with Mad Viking Finland and Korpiklaani.”says Anna-Leena Mitro, the treasuring manager of Sylva.
Due to the covid situation, there won’t be a public launching event, but Korven Kyynel is launched officially today, Thursday 15th of October at 12 PM with this media release.
The sale starts November 1st and the oil will be sold in the online stores of Partawa and Korpiklaani.

After celebrating the release of their unique Spruce flavoured Vodka with a live stream held at the Pyynikin Brewery in Tampere, Finland, KORPIKLAANI are today releasing a very special cover. Their new single ‘Sudenmorsian’ is their take on Powerwolf’s song “Where The Wild Wolves Have Gone”, which was recorded & mixed by Jonne Järvelä at his JonneStudio.
The band states: “When we were approached by Powerwolf, we agreed immediately and wanted to do something a little different and special. Once again Tuomas Keskimäki did his magic and adapted the lyrics into Finnish and made a fitting powerful tale. Of all the covers we have done over the years, this is one we are really proud of and cannot wait for everyone to hear this.”
Sudenmorsian (The Wolf’s Bride) tells the story of loneliness and lycanthropy. The story follows a man who is inseparable with his bride, but when summer’s gentle nights pass and darkness comes, the man turns into a wolf. He realises that if he surrenders to the call of nature, he’ll be destined to live alone.
