Chris “Mordrid” Hathcock has over the years progressed not only as a musician but as a composer as well. His latest addition follows similar musical paths as that of Opeth, with little obscurities of both direction in the music and the effects. ‘In Pursuit of Redemption’ as it starts reminded me very much of ‘Harvest’ by Opeth, but as it progresses the sound is heavily opened up with almost Megadeth-esq harmonies and expressions. The drums really have a great sound characteristic to them, as do the vocals and acoustic guitars; A very nice track! As I progress through the album, the conjoining rhythms and expanding samples really take you onto another cosmos of experience. With the breakdowns in ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’ going from the Muse-esq manic rhythms into the subtle acoustic rhythms is wonderful. ‘Lie to Me’ is another very gentle track which I almost fell asleep listening to. Full of gentle harmonious textures with a pitch perfect uniqueness and deliberations making it a beautiful track. ‘Silence’ has the most astonishing solo lead section, which is totally off-set to the rest of this album, but works so well, as do the metal growls. The rendition of ‘Losing My Religion’ by REM has been very well created, with some great features. Although the tempo has been reduced quite a lot; ‘Hathcock’ really does it justice with his mix of harmony lines and gentle guitars. Very good!
This is a great album although I wouldn’t dare drive with this on as it is far too easy to relax and fall asleep to.
