Living Bridges

SHARDBORNE, the prog metal maestros coming straight from the Emerald Isle, are pleased to announce that they have teamed up with Prog Magazine to unveil ‘Room Within A Room’, their first official video from upcoming release “Living Bridges”.The album is set for release on 10th July via Out On A Limb Records. The video was filmed in two locations in Shardborne’s home city of Limerick. The deconsecrated Franciscan church where the band recorded the drums for the album and a venue with an LED wall that they wanted to use in the video.

The band comments, “We spent a while talking over different locations and after the first shoot [in the church] it took us nearly a year to decide where to film the next part of the video.”

Actually choosing track ‘Room Within A Room’ as the first song to make into a video was an easy decision for the band. “We wanted to have a strong track for the first video and we plan on making videos for most if not all of the songs on Living Bridges.”

“’Room Within A Room’ is, oddly enough, the last track on the album. It offers a good idea as to the rest of the tunes. It’s a good closer – we wanted to end Living Bridges on a strong note.”

“Although there is no singing, there are musical themes repeated in the song at some points and this was reflected somewhat in the different lighting styles. We wanted to keep it as varied as possible so that it could stay visually as interesting as the music”.

Using lighting as a clever way to progress through the song was a conscious decision for the band. Shardborne worked closely with director and close friend Shane Serrano to develop the video’s concept, with editing by Colm O’Neill.

“We knew we wanted to have the lighting be an interesting visual component to the video, but we had not planned out exactly how we would do it. We had a friend who does lighting bring a lot of equipment and we experimented with ideas until we got what we liked.”

“We tried to utilise the spaces we were in as much as possible. We used a few significant lighting types throughout the video. The bright white and red lights as we appear as a whole band in the church, then there are blue coloured visualisations projected over us in a glass room. These are used early on in the song, and as the song progresses, the second location with the LED wall and the most drastic lighting style of the three is used. This style has a lot of fast cuts and strobe lighting to suit the faster, more dramatic parts of the song.”

Irish instrumental prog metal masters, SHARDBORNE are pleased to announce details of their upcoming full-length debut Living Bridges which is set to be unveiled on the 10^th July 2015.

“Progressive metal drawing influence from many genres such as rock, metal, jazz, alternative and instrumental music… Living Bridges is a culmination of musical styles, concepts and several years of writing.” Comments the band on the release and follow-up to their 2011 Aeonian Sequence EP.

The four-piece from Limerick, are also happy to announce that they have signed to independent Irish label Out On A Limb Records for the release.

Comments Shardborne on the signing, “We’re delighted to be working with the guys in Out On A Limb. Any help we can get getting our music out is greatly appreciated! They are really great people to be working with and they are on the same page as us about the release of the album and how to work with our music. We’ve been aware of the label for quite a while so it’s nice to be added as part of the OOAL family.”

Out On A Limb Records joint owner Ciarán had this to say about the label’s newest signing , “When [Shardborne] sent us on Living Bridges for a listen, it really exceeded my expectations. I knew a good few of the tracks from hearing them live but hearing the whole thing together brought it to a whole new level. They’ve got their shit together in every way possible, and they’re good guys too, which is an important thing when you’re running an independent label like ours.”

Renowned illustrator Duncan Storr [Skyclad] created the Living Bridges artwork. The album was recorded by the band’s Ben Wanders and Ciaran Culhane and went on to be mixed and mastered by producer Jamie King [Between the Buried and Me, Scale the Summit].

With their current instrumental line-up being cemented in 2010, Shardborne went on to record and release debut EP Aeonian Sequence in 2011. The four-track introduction to the band, (now available for free download on Bandcamp), drew deserved attention and lauded Shardborne with raved reviews.

Honing their creative talent into a mesmerising and exciting live show the band then hit the road, touring both their native Ireland as well as the UK and mainland Europe, sharing the stage along the way with the likes of Cynic, Chimp Spanner and Russian Circles.

Fast-forward to 2015 and Living Bridges is set to transport both Shardborne and fans to another plane of existence with its release on 10^th July. The release will be supported by a launch gig in Dolan’s Warehouse Limerick and will be available on heavyweight double LP, CD, and digital format.
