In the last 12 months, George Lynch has maintained a work rate that must qualify 2014 as one of the most creative periods of his career. More importantly for fans, he’s kept the quality at a level that would suggest that he positively thrives on having the opportunity to collaborate and keep developing his craft as a guitarist and songwriter. A hit album from KXM, another very strong release due anytime now from Sweet/Lynch, and in between comes a new Lynch Mob record, “Sun Red Sun”. Four of the songs here were previously released as an EP, but in their new setting here, remastered and partnered up with six additional new numbers and a cover of Bad Company’s “Burnin’ Sky”, there’s no lack of cohesion, and “Sun Red Sun” flows well from beginning to end as a complete album in its own right, with plenty of light and shade in the music.
Last year, the band’s acclaimed first album “Wicked Sensation” was re-released, and for me, on listening to “Sun Red Sun” after revisiting the debut recently, there’s a clear sense of continuity. The writing partnership of Lynch and vocalist/lyricist Oni Logan is still potent, and these songs preserve enough of the Blues-infused feel of “Wicked Sensation”, whilst managing to add new influences and show definite growth and progression. Logan is a soulful singer and thoughtful lyricist, and George Lynch excels here as both songwriter and soloist, with a fresh, inspired performance, his trademark razor-sharp riffs and stinging solos retaining all the elements that first marked him out as an exemplary guitar player. Songs of the calibre of “Believers of the Day”, “Subliminal Dream”, the acoustic based title track, and the more atmospheric “Play The Game”, make it clear that this is a band still capable of taking their sound forward without losing sight of their roots. “Sun Red Sun” is an inventive and engaging album, and I’d rank it among the best George Lynch has been involved with.
Two of hard rock’s most notable figures have partnered up for a new project. Iconic vocalist /guitarist Michael Sweet of STRYPER and legendary guitarist George Lynch of LYNCH MOB/DOKKEN have teamed up to form a new supergroup SWEET & LYNCH. Joining them on this new musical adventure is bassist James Lomenzo and drummer Brian Tichy. The band will be releasing their debut album Only To Rise on January 23rd 2015 in Europe and January 27th, 2015 in North America via Frontiers Music Srl. Sweet & Lynch recently launched a pre-order for the new album via PledgeMusic. The pre-order features various bundle packages for fans and is live at: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/sweetlynch
“When I was approached to help put together an all-star lineup, instantly I thought of George Lynch,” explains Michael Sweet. “George is one of the most talented guitarists out there and a ‘bucket list’ player for me. George wrote riffs/basic ideas and I wrote melodies, lyrics and arranged and completed the songs. I knew that we would compliment each other’s style. When you add the amazing rhythm section of Brian Tichy and James Lomenzo, you just can’t go wrong with this line-up. It really is a special project and I’m honored to be a part of it!”
From the opening notes of “The Wish” to the drum solo finish on the album-closer “Only To Rise,” it is evident that this musical partnership between Michael Sweet’s unmistakable voice and George Lynch’s signature guitar tone has yielded incredible results. Songs “Like A Dying Rose,” “Me Without You” and “Strength In Numbers” showcase the diversity that permeates throughout the entire album. Sweet & Lynch released a lyric video for the 9/11 inspired track “September” which can be seen here:
An EPK featuring Michael and George discussing this new project can be seen here:
Only To Rise was produced by Michael Sweet who also produced the last Stryper album, No More Hell To Pay, which received massive fan praise and critical acclaim alike.
The track listing for Only To Rise is:
1. The Wish
2. Dying Rose
3. Love Stays
4. Time Will Tell
5. Rescue Me
6. Me Without You
7. Recover
8. Divine
9. September
10. Strength In Numbers
11. Hero-Zero
12. Only To Rise
Plans are currently being worked out for Sweet & Lynch to play a few live shows in the Spring of next year, making this different than any other supergroups that record together but never play live. More information will be announced in the near future. If the past records of these four musicians are any indication, no fan will want to miss these shows.
earMusic has announced that KXM is to release their debut album “KXM” on May 30th 2014.
K like Korn. X as in King’s X. M as with Lynch Mob. With their creative union called KXM, which came into life through a jamming mood, King’s X vocalist Doug Pinnick, Korn drummer Ray Luzier and guitarist George Lynch (ex. Dokken, Lynch Mob) have channeled their musical talents into a unique symbiosis of hard rock music.
KXM was conceived like many great things are: by chance. During a party at Luzier’s house the host asked his friends Pinnick and Lynch if they wanted to hang out and jam with him some time. And since both of them are crazy about music and always happy to try out new things, the answer of course was positive. They met at the next opportunity, jammed straight on, chimed together perfectly and all of a sudden had a whole album of powerful rock songs in the can.
George Lynch still feels giddy about this new rock alliance. “KXM is just one big happy accident! When Ray, Doug and I got together to talk about doing this we just thought we’d get together very casually, have some fun and do some jamming, and see what came of it, without any real high expectations. We had no management, label, crew, studio… we didn’t even have a song!“ he says with a laugh. “Our one rule was that we leave any and all preconceived ideas at home and that we would start from scratch and build something new from the ground up. Ten days later we had an album. Now there’s this nice big buzz out there and we’re all kind of shocked. The response was unexpected …and exciting! I haven’t been involved in a project that’s generated this kind of excitement since the Lynch Mob ‘Wicked Sensation’ release in 1990. It feels great…and it feels right.”
But first and foremost, it sounds great and right. The wonderfully catchy first album single ‘Rescue Me’ shows what this rock collective is capable of: Pinnick’s unique voice and his distorted bass grooves meld with Luzier’s powerful and precise drumming and Lynch’s buzzing trademark riffs into fresh and vibrant rock anthem. However, this is just a foretaste of what is to come, that is, an album whose diversity and dynamic will not only thrill all fans of the trio’s main bands but any friend of powerful rock music in general as well. On their eponymous debut, which was produced by Chris Collier (Lynch Mob, Lita Ford, Tommy Bolin), KXM cover the whole spectrum of modern rock music: from the emotional ballad ‘Never Stop Loving You’ to the mesmerizingly unsettling ‘Sleep’ to the epic and vigorous ‘Human Friction’.
When three musicians of this caliber unite it’s not necessarily a given that something great will ensue. However, it is possible that something great ensues – if the oft-quoted chemistry is right. With KXM the chemistry is right indeed. The outcome is a debut album that will shake the strongholds of rock music.
