Chicago legends of Murder Metal/Death Metal MACABRE released their demented, heinous bloodbath of an album, “Carnival Of Killers” in November 2021 via Nuclear Blast. Today, the band releases an animated music video for ‘Richard Speck Grew Big Breasts’.
In 1996, award-winning news journalist, Bill Kurtis, debuted a series on Chicago’s WBBM-TV displaying video clips of Richard Speck and two other inmates in a staff training area inside the maximum-security Stateville Correctional Center. The footage included Speck detailing how he was enjoying himself in prison by engaging in sexual acts as well as showing the use of illegal substances. Speck‘s appearance was noticeably altered as he had used illicitly supplied female hormones to grow breasts.
MACABRE’s Corporate Death comments, “I started getting the idea to write this song after seeing the Speck videos on Channel 2 News here in Chicago. We played it out a few times soon after including an appearance on the top-rated Mancow’s Morning Madhouse radio program but only recently has it been properly recorded and released for our “Carnival Of Killers” album. I wanted to give it a punk rock feel, I was going to a lot of club shows then and was inspired by Dayglo Abortions, 7 Seconds, MDC, and vocally by D.I..”

Two weeks ago, Chicago legends of Murder Metal/Death Metal MACABRE released their demented, heinous bloodbath of an album, Carnival Of Killers via Nuclear Blast. Today, the band reveal the video for “Joe Ball Was His Name” which was created by Sweden’s Amanda Odenlid who previously made MACABRE MINSTELS (Macabre unplugged) videos for “The Cat Came Back,” “Found A Peanut,” “The Geins,” & “Tom Dooley”.

MACABRE’s Corporate Death comments, “Joe Ball was a serial killer called the Alligator Man. I started writing this song around our Grim Scary Tales era, but never actually finished it until getting things in place to record Carnival Of Killers. Reading more about him and his evil deeds from way back in the 1930’s I tried to give the song an old-time ragtime feel. I hope you like it, it’s a little different, but so are we.
Amanda Odenlid quote: “I made the Macabre Minstrels videos just for fun, back when my interest in true crime had really taken off full force (thanks to discovering Macabre, actually). The “chibi”-style I used first saw the light of day when I started making a sort of tongue-in-cheek webcomic about Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer living together. I like the style because it is simple but expressive, and I also like the clash that occurs between the cartoony VS the grotesque and morbid. Having listened to Macabre for 10+ years has made me realize that, while morbid, there is also quite a lot of dark humor in their music as well. Kind of like my own art, in a way. As for this new video about Joe Ball; making it basically forced me out of an art-block I’d been having, also making me rediscover how fun it was to draw in this old chibi-style of mine. I went from only having heard of Ball’s name somewhere, to almost knowing everything about him that there is to know (except his exact body-count). Despite the grim subject-matter, it was really fun to learn something new and to revisit my old passions for drawing and video-making!”
Chicago legends of Murder Metal/Death Metal are proud to release their demented, heinous bloodbath of an album, Carnival Of Killers on this fitting Friday the 13th. In the usual MACABRE fashion and staying true to their name, they offer fans the perfect road trip sing-a-long coupled with a visually disturbing video for the single “The Wheels On The Bug” which chronicles the Ted Bundy murder spree.
MACABRE’s Corporate Death comments, “In our music, we tell true stories about different killers and you will gather information from our songs. It is like reading a newspaper article about these people but we tell stories via our music. I like to call it creative story telling about very bad people. My mother used to buy me children’s records, from an early age, she saw that I liked to sing along. ‘The Wheels On The Bug’ is based on a song from a record my mother bought for me when I was young. I used to sing that song on the school bus. It must have stuck with me, as all these years later I’m still singing it, only we changed it up and made it more MACABRE.”
The video was helmed by award-winning filmmaker, Ryan Oliver who’s previously directed the MACABRE music video for “Your Window Is Open” as well as videos for The Atlas Moth, Bill & Phil, Child Bite and Lair of the Minotaur. The video was produced in hand with his colleagues at The Rot Shop, a fabrication and FX shop in Chicago where the same group has previously made props and FX for many artists including MINISTRY and METALLICA. “Carnival Of Killers” was recorded and mixed by Tomek Spirala of Studio1134 with the exception of drum tracks as he recorded them at Kiwi Audio with the help of Mark Walker. The mastering of “Carnival Of Killers” was handled by J.F. Dagenais at JFD Studios in Dallas, TX. The “Where’s Waldo” meets serial killer album artwork was created by Corporate Death (lead singer | guitarist Lance Lencioni) and artist Laz Gein and highlights the album’s most memorable references.

Come one! Come all, to the demented, heinous bloodbath of a murder metal circus that declares MACABRE’s return; Carnival Of Killers. As the band’s first full-length album in almost 10 years and just in time for their 35th anniversary as a band, “Carnival Of Killers” will be released on November 13th via Nuclear Blast Records.
Today, the band released the first single entitled, ‘The Lake Of Fire’, which can be seen here:
MACABRE’s Corporate Death comments, “‘The Lake Of Fire’ is about the hidden bunker that Leonard Lake and Charles Ng had where they tortured and killed young women with tools and filmed it all. Those were two very evil men so I thought the title was fitting!!! I started writing the chorus back in our Grim Scary Tales era and finally finished the song all these years later for the new album Carnival Of Killers. I hope you like it, I wanted a lot of variety on the new album, this is just a taste.”
