For the fifth year, nominations for the annual Grammy Awards were announced on primetime television as part of “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live! — Countdown To Music’s Biggest Night”, a one-hour CBS entertainment special broadcast live for the first time ever at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. The 55th annual Grammy Awards will be held on “Grammy Sunday,” Sunday, February 10, 2013, (8:00-11:30 p.m., live ET/delayed PT) at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
“The Grammy Awards process once again has produced a diverse and impressive list of nominations across multiple genres,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. “This year’s nominees truly represent an exceptional and vibrant creative community that exemplifies some of the highest levels of artistry and excellence in their respective fields. Combined with the fifth year of our primetime nominations special, we’re off to an exciting start on the road to Music’s Biggest Night, the 55th annual Grammy Awards, on February 10.”
This year’s Grammy Awards process registered more than 17,000 submissions over a 12-month eligibility period, October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012. Grammy ballots for the final round of voting will be mailed on Wednesday, December 19 to the voting members of The Recording Academy. They are due back to the accounting firm of Deloitte by Wednesday, January 16, when they will be tabulated and the results kept secret until the 55th Grammy broadcast.

Chris Parker of Boise Weekly recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH guitarist Chris Broderick. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On the high expectations surrounding his gig as MEGADETH‘s seventh lead guitarist:
Broderick: “I’d consider it high stress, not necessarily because of the actual workload but more because of the microscope you’re under at this level. Everybody is video-recording you. Everybody has an expectation because of all the great guitarists that have been in MEGADETH in the past.”
On his early guitar influences:
Broderick: “[When I got my first guitar], the first thing I did was spray it red and put black duct tape on it, because I wanted to be Eddie Van Halen. Then as soon as I heard Yngwie [Malmsteen], it was all over for me. Then I got into all the shredders like Jason Becker [who played with later MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman in CACOPHONY] and Paul Gilbert.”
On how he and MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine have complementary styles:
Broderick: “Dave‘s always been self-taught and he always kind of gets what he wants out of his playing, but you can tell he fights for it all the way there. You can hear it in his playing and in the way he attacks the guitar. I came at it from a very different road, where I had a lot of different instructors and people showing me the path to get there. I’ve always been about trying to minimize effort to do what I’m trying to do — two different paths. I think it’s so cool because [our styles] both translate into their own feel and their own kind of sound. When you put them together, they complement each other very well. He brings his own writing style into the mix, so when I look at that, I’m thinking, ‘How do I write a counter melody or a counter harmony to that particular part?’ It definitely makes it that much more interesting for me.”
On how thrash metal has reached a new wave of fans in recent years:
Broderick: “It’s cool to see it transcend so many generations. Knowing that it’s been around since 1983, and it’s got fans that are still with us from then, but also to see it resurge in the younger generation is really cool. It’s awesome to see them appreciate thrash the way I do.”
On MEGADETH‘s plans for the follow-up to 2011’s “TH1RT3EN”:
Broderick: “We’re so busy right now. We’re writing the new CD in our off time. And we’re really not taking a lot of time off in the first place. We’re just moving and grooving. We’re demoing songs and starting to look at the direction we want it to go in.”
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has slammed CNN founder Ted Turner for saying during a recent interview that a rise in military suicides in relation to combat deaths is a “good” development.
Speaking to CNN‘s Piers Morgan on October 19, Turner said, “I think it’s good” that American soldiers are turning their guns on themselves, insisting that it shows humans aren’t meant to be put on the battlefield to bring death to others.
“It’s so clear that we’re programmed and we’re born to love and help each other, not to kill each other, to destroy each other,” he said. “That’s an aberration. That’s left over from hundreds of years ago. It’s time for to us start acting enlightened.”
After a backlash of negative press, Turner issued a statement to say he’s sorry for anyone offended by his comment.
“During my recent interview on CNN‘s ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’, I inadvertently used the word ‘good’ when asked for my thoughts on the increasing rate of suicide among U.S. military soldiers in the Middle East,” Turner said. “It was certainly not my intent to imply that suicide is ‘good.’ Rather, I was implying that it is good that the public is more aware of these tragedies and is more averse to war and war-related fatalities.
“My message has always been one of peace, I believe that we’re born programmed to love and help each other, not to kill or hurt each other. I strongly support our U.S. troops and would never intentionally say anything to harm the brave men and women serving our country. I deeply apologize for any misunderstanding caused by this comment.”
During MEGADETH‘s November 16 concert at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Mustaine addressed the Turner controversy before performing the song “Countdown To Extinction” (see video below), saying, “I don’t know if you know this or not, but there was a guy that was on the news… I like to watch the news a lot, I’m sure you know that. I was watching the news and there was a guy that said… he thinks it’s good that the troops are committing suicide. Troops like us, you and me.
“Like when I was 18, I put my name in for the Selective Service, like all of us, our brothers, our sisters. He thinks it’s good that the troops are committing suicide.
“You wanna know who this guy is? His name is Ted Turner, the owner of CNN. [Crowd starts booing] You know what?! I think he sucks too. I think we should watching CNN, we should stop watching Headline News, we should stop watching TBS [Turner Broadcasting System].
“As long as our troops are Americans, and you’re saying that you think it’s good that they’re dying, you’re saying you think it’s good that we’re dying. And that ain’t cool. [Crowd starts chanting, ‘Fuck Ted!’] I don’t know if you’ve seen Ted, but he would be lucky if somebody would fuck him. [laughs]
“I’m having a good time. Are you? This next song is about people trying to put us out of existence. This song is called ‘Countdown To Extinction’.”
Ed Condran of Atlantic City Weekly recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Atlantic City Weekly: I interviewed [comedian] George Carlin just before he passed away five years ago. He said that as a civilization we’re circling the drain.
Mustaine: You want to hear something very bizarre? I was reading Carlin and listening to his stand-up when I wrote some of the songs on [1992’s] “Countdown To Extinction”. I remember writing “Sweating Bullets” after reading Carlin. I just thought: “Did I mention George Carlin and ‘Sweating Bullets’ or did he say that and I forgot?” [laughs] That’s mind-blowing that you said that. Back then we were listening to a lot of Carlin‘s tapes. We were listening to a lot of stand-up. We listened to Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor and it had a huge effect.
Atlantic City Weekly: You said from the stage that if Barack Obama were re-elected, you would leave for Canada. Have you started packing yet?
Mustaine: A lot of that was stage fodder. You’re talking about the Singapore incident. I was just there marveling how beautiful Singapore is and I started thinking about how our nation is changing and I don’t know if we can handle all of the taxation. I know years ago that in England the taxes got so out of control that people left and I can see it happening here. There could be a mass exodus here. There are quite a few musicians who are blessed enough to be making $250,000 or more a year and they will be taxed. I think what will happen is that bands will be dying left and right. What’s happening now is that everything America has been built on will be destroyed.
Atlantic City Weekly: What do you think will happen in the future??
Mustaine: The way things are going after this election is that I think a lot of people are going to be hoping the Mayan Calendar — [saying the world ends December 21, 2012] — is correct. I think life will continue on. We’re a strong nation, no matter who is in the White House. God is in my White House. I’m a Christian and I make a lot of mistakes, but I try to keep my head up and do the right thing. It’s crazy out there. I’m a dad. Oddly enough, my son just got a notice from the Selective Service and he has to register. No one else from his school mentioned they got a notice. My daughter said that she thinks they’re targeting [my son] Justice because of me. I said, “No, they are not!” But I was thinking, “What’s going on?” But having two kids, I try to do my best.
