Los Angeles-based guitarist/songwriter Bill Hudson (NORTHTALE, I AM MORBID, former DIRKSCHNEIDER, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, Circle II Circle, Jon Oliva’s Pain and more) has become a very sought after name in the hard rock world in recent years. Whether he is in Germany headlining the biggest heavy metal festival in the world or in the studio recording guitars for a video game soundtrack, there’s never a dull moment in the life of the Brazilian musician. In the summer of 2015, he made history in Germany, headlining Wacken Open Air, performing in front of 80,000 fans with the TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA. Hudson joined the TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA also for their winter tour in 2015, performing 52 shows in 6 weeks throughout the US and Canada for an average of 15,000 fans a day. From April 2017 to April 2018 Bill Hudson made part of the DIRKSCHNEIDER line-up, touring widely both America and Europe. In February 2018 Bill launched his new power metal band, NORTHTALE. Watch Bill Hudson – E.G.O:
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice interviewed Kurdt Vanderhoof from Thrash legends METAL CHURCH. Kurdt spoke about the meaning behind the lyrics on bands new upcoming album Damned if you do, his brief encounter with Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich back in the early days, and how the band still has not recouped their expenses on their first few albums.
Watch the interview here:
When asked how their new upcoming album is different from the last album Xi in 2016
“The recording process was pretty much the same I would get everything ready, then Mike Howe and I work on vocal melodies. Then we work on the demos, then everybody else in the band comes in and puts their stamp on it. That was our process and nothing was really that different from last record. I intentionally wanted it sound old school because it is also coming out on vinyl and we wanted to produce it for the vinyl. I kind of shy away from the modern digital sound of modern metal records cause everybody is doing it and they all sound the same. ”
When asked about the meaning behind the lyrics on some of the songs on the new album
Revolution Underway- This song has a lot to do with the social political climate of the world especially in America where a lot of people are waking up to a lot of the corruption and the lying in an era of fake news, so there is a lot of waking up to the reality of whats going on.
Monkey Finger- That is a song about when you run into people that like to blame other people for their problems, playing the victim and they point their fingers at everybody else for all their own problems which are there own fault.
By the Numbers- That song was about all the numbers we have to deal with everyday, bank accounts, passwords ,logins, credit cards, etc.. all these numbers that control your life.
The War Electric- That song is about the how divided the world is and how we are are fighting everything that is online
Rot away- That’s a heavy metal song (Laughs)
When asked about his connection to Metallica’s Lars Ulrich back in the beginning days of Thrash
“We actually never played together, that was one of the rumours that started sometime ago that he was one of our drummers but that was never true. I was living in San Francisco trying to start the band and I ended up meeting him and he had just come over from Denmark and he was planing to go to LA. All we ended up doing was party and hang out and just talk about being in a band. But we were friends before he got to L.A.”
When asked about if the band was still in debt for the first few albums
“After certain amount of time on a major label like Electra you find out how the business works, which in our particular case it was not working in our favour, you learn the definition of the word recoup. And then you realize there is no way you can make any money unless you break big like Metallica but until then you are operating in Debt and you will never break out. Everybody gets paid first and the band gets paid last. I have the publishing which are not much money but no other royalties. We are still in debt on the first few albums. Not only that but it’s tough to find out how much debt or profit after all these years. They send statements that you can’t read unless you are a lawyer, so I just wrote it off. Your in debt for tour support, your in debt for videos, your in debt for everything and those are the reasons why I really like the new music business, there is more good about the new music business than there is bad. It’s more direct artists to fans and us old guys can still have a career.”

West coast metal veterans METAL CHURCH recently announced the release of their 12th full length studio album “Damned If You Do” via Nuclear Blast Records for December 7, 2018 (Rat Pak Records/America & King Records/Japan). The latest release is the follow-up to their highly successful 2016 album »XI«, which saw the return of legendary frontman Mike Howe. »Damned If You Do« is a cross between the band’s iconic »Blessing In Disguise« and »The Human Factor«.
After unleashing the first musical taster in the form of a music video for the album’s title track two weeks ago, the band has now launched the second single, ‘Out Of Balance’, today. Check out the track, featuring a splendid guitar solo, over here:
States guitar maestro Kurdt Vanderhoof, “The song is about finding your place in your life and making peace with it. Realising that your life is a series of choices and at the end of the day being able to accept that fact.”

Hot on the heels of the aforementioned announcement, METAL CHURCH have released the first music video for the title track ‘Damned If You Do.’ The song is quintessential METAL CHURCH and showcases the sound that has garnered the band fans all around the globe, with its driving guitar riffs, punishing drum beat and instantly recognizable vocals. The live performance video can be seen here:
Comments Mike Howe, “I hope the fans enjoy this first video, it really sets the tone for the entire album. We are doing our best to keep metal alive METAL CHURCH style. Damned if we didn’t!”
Adds Stet Howland, “From my first listen of the ‘Damned If You Do’ demo I was blown away. From Mike’s “hummm” intro to Kurdt’s bad ass guitar riff to the infectious chorus, I was hooked! If I was any more excited people would have to call me “shit legs.” Hahaha.”
Fans that have seen METAL CHURCH live at their recent shows in the United States and Europe, may have noticed a new face on stage. The guy behind the kit has been none other than Stet Howland and now that the hazing process is complete, METAL CHURCH are happy to announce the addition of Stet Howland as the band’s permanent new drummer!
Vocalist Mike Howe adds, “I am overwhelmed and grateful that Stet has found his way into the fold and I look forward to many successful and joyful performances together.”
Guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof compliments Stet saying, “We are extremely happy to have Stet as our new engine. He is a fantastic drummer and a great guy to work with. But the hazing shall continue relentlessly!”
Stet Howland shares his excitement about joining METAL CHURCH: “After being home for only a few days from possibly the best tour of my life, I received a conference call from Kurdt and Mike, for a split second I thought to myself ‘Oh shit, what did I do?’ But my concern quickly turned to an un-removable smile when they asked if I would be interested in being a permanent member of METAL CHURCH.
It’s no secret that METAL CHURCH have always been one of my favorite metal bands and that, in my opinion, they are on the strongest ascent of any band in their genre! And given that the band kicks ass live, has an incredible record label, amazing publicist, a rabid fan base, relevant new music, recent Billboard chart positions and first week CD sales that rival multi-platinum acts, my answer was an unwavering “YES”!
On my maiden journey I was blown away by Mike Howe’s consistent crowd destruction, Kurdt’s ridiculously heavy riffs, Rick Van Zandt’s refusal to make even one mistake and my glue-like bond with Steve (it’s a well known fact that METAL CHURCH bass player Steve Unger is one of my closest friends and it was Steve who initially suggested me to the band).
There is understanding, mutual respect and camaraderie present here that is missing in so many “famous” acts. I am honored to be a member of such a group of people and will do my best to deliver strong performances both live and in the studio.”
