PitCam.TV conducted an interview with vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH at this year’s edition of the Wacken Open Air festival, which was held August 2-4 in Wacken, Germany. You can now watch the chat below.
Asked whether OPETH has begun work on the follow-up to last year’s “Heritage” album, Mikael replied, “I’ve been writing a little. I’m going on a trip soon — next week — on my own, actually, which I’ve never done before. I’m gonna bring the guitar and write some stuff, hopefully. But I think we’re still touring, and we still have another European tour coming up in the fall. And that kind of prevents me from getting too into the work — the creative process. I’m gonna start writing more from real once we finish the tour. ‘Cause I don’t have much.”
Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt was interviewed by Warner Music Germany when the band played Rock im Park in July, and you can watch the clip below now. He talks about their plans for the rest of 2012, having a show scheduled in the Maldives the same day the country’s president was overthrown, culture shock moments on the road, and more. Enjoy!
Legendary keyboardist Jon Lord, best known for his work with Deep Purple from the 1968 to 2002, died July 17 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess posted the following tribute on Twitter: “I’m very sad to hear about the passing of Jon Lord. He was an inspiration to me!…Tonight’s Dream Theater in Boston was dedicated to the spirit of Jon Lord. I improvised a piano piece which I directed to his memory.”
Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt had even more to say, as Deep Purple have been a huge influence on the band. Not only did they cover Purple’s “Soldier of Fortune” as a bonus track on the special edition of Ghost Reveries, but their 2010 live CD/DVD set, In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, came in cover art that was a tribute to Deep Purple‘s 1970 album Concerto for Group and Orchestra.
Here’s what Mikael had to say:
“We’re very saddened to hear about the passing of the great Jon Lord. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. He’s obviously partly responsible for Opeth ever being formed, so we’re in massive debt to him.
“Martin Mendez and Martin Axenrot obviously had the pleasure of working with, and playing with Lord, and both said it was such an amazing experience. He was a sheer musical genius. Axenrot even said that when he’d asked what bpm (beats per minute) a song was supposed to be in. Lord had said, ‘Around 140 bpm,’ and started clapping his hands in the desired beat. Axenrotchecked with his metronome and sure enough, Lord was clapping in exactly 140 bpm!
“Jon Lord. We love you. Your music lives on and your memory will never fade.”

Pretty in Noise interviewed Opeth guitarist Fredrik Åkesson backstage at the Rock am Ring festival in Germany last month; you can watch the 10-minute conversation below. Fredrik talks about the decision-making process within Opeth, his own thoughts about why bands break up, how to choose bandmembers (talent vs. personality), watching comedies and horror movies on the tour bus, and much more.
The members of Opeth were recently interviewed at length by Roy Kristensen and Alexander Skottene Twiss of Norway’s Imhotep Productions. They talk about balancing rock life with personal life, dealing with loud audience members during quiet songs, and much more, including a truly horrifying challenge Mikael Åkerfeldt offered to an audience member, so take some time and watch the whole thing.
In a brand new interview with Niclas Müller-Hansen of Sweden’s Metalshrine, guitarist/co-founder Anders “Blakkheim” Nyström of Swedish dark rockers KATATONIA was asked about the band’s touring plans following the release of their new album, “Dead End Kings”. “We’re actually going out with OPETH again,” he replied. “A new U.S. tour after the one with DEVIN TOWNSEND [PROJECT] and PARADISE LOST. We’re gonna play some other territories with OPETH so we’re out for another month in October. Then we have four days off and then there’s a two-month tour of Europe as part of a package. Some very melodic bands.”
This September, KATATONIA and DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT will team up for the “Epic Kings & Idols Tour”, a co-headlining North American run featuring PARADISE LOST as direct support and STOLEN BABIES as openers (DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT and KATATONIA will alternate in headlining each show). The trek will kick off on September 4 in Seattle, Washington and conclude on September 24 in Baltimore, Maryland.
