Opium Death is a brutal concoction of extreme metal, sent forth from the suburbs of Chicago, USA to lay waste to metalheads around the world with their first full-length album “Genocidal Nemesis”, which is being unleashed on April 19th. The band comments on the connection between the music and the lyrics:

“Lyrics and music go hand in hand. So far we noticed that as we wrote a majority of the lyrics last, the tonality of the songs and how they flow from beginning to end definitely had us think of certain sentences or phrases to be sung in a relative and consistent manner with the chords and rhythm. Or the lyrics can give off such a feeling of tension or melancholy or whatever that the music now has to serve that purpose or it may feel disjointed if not thought out very well.”

The album features a diverse range of tracks, each offering a unique sonic experience while maintaining Opium Death‘s signature heavy sound. “Ozymandias is about pride and wrath and the importance of keeping them in check during your life against the inevitable decay of information over time. One of our longest songs on the album, we felt it was a track that could benefit from utilizing exotic scales and vocal layering as it comes up later in the song to bring up this sense of immortality to a concept that will forever be ingrained in our human ego.”

Coming from different musical backgrounds, each band member shapes their perception and interpretation of heavy metal. With “Genocidal Nemesis”, they’ve embraced their diverse influences to create an album that defies expectations and pushes the boundaries of the genre. Chicago USA’s Opium Death has a brutal new album coming out next month and those with thrash and death metal sensibilities should take note as “Genocidal Nemesis” delivers slick groove bass lines, heart rate-increasing riffs, and gritty vocals. Thus far they have released two singles “Genocidal Nemesis I: Fear” and “The Condemned” each exploring real-life concepts. This trend continues with the third single “Vesuvius”, about the eruption, as the band explains:

“Vesuvius is a review and representation of the famous disaster in Pompeii, the themes of self-demise present in the rest of the album do not really apply here. Musically it has this very nice blend of thrash and death metal throughout the song and one of our favourite sections in the song is the breakdown that helps construct the explosion of the disaster. We are hoping it becomes a fan favorite.”

For Opium Death, there is no clear rule or fixed process/formula when they write out songs. Sometimes they come up with a section during practice and work from there, or one of them records a part on an instrument and shows it to the others. This diverse and spontaneous nature of their creative collaboration, along with a wide range of influences across the metal spectrum leads to an album that has a song for everyone and every occasion.

Opium Death, a Chicago, USA-based band, is gearing up to release their first full-length album “Genocidal Nemesis” in April. Known for seamlessly blending thrash and death metal elements, the band has undergone significant evolution since its inception in 2012. Originally formed under the name Cazador, the band has faced lineup changes, but their commitment to modernizing classic 80’s thrash metal remains unwavering. The latest single “The Condemned” confronts dark and bleak subject matter as guitarist Irvin Gonzalez describes:

“At the time that I was writing this song, especially coming up with the lyrics, there was a trend of stories coming out in the news and social media about school bullying being an increasing phenomenon amongst children and how the victims ended up committing suicide. This angered me to write a song for those victims but in a way that reflects their thoughts and feelings in the afterlife.”

Musically, he goes on to say, it is a straightforward metal track and has a captivating groove which he hopes will lead people to reading the lyrics and taking bullying more seriously. While personally not condoning responding with life-taking intent, it is intended to make the listener angry and disgusted enough to take action.

With the release of the album Opium Death intends to showcase it at venues locally and regionally, where people can have their faces melted in real time with sonic blasts of passion and creatively wrapped up in a brutal package.
