I first met the guys in OSMIUM GUILLOTINE a couple years back at the Metal Gods festival that was held at the Intake Club in Mansfield, England. Good guys to hang out with and a band that seemed to have a pulse on the early days on the NWOBHM bands. Before heading home, drummer James Balcombe gave me their first demo, “Into the Battle” which I immediately shoved into my stereo upon arriving home. My first instincts were right and as I recently heard that they had a released a full length CD, I wanted the opportunity to review it.
I have listened to this debut album a dozen times and I’ve come to same conclusion each time. What we have here is a tale of two cities. So let’s observe the city on the right first. The first track that stands out musically is cut number 3 called “D-Day”. The tone and attitude of the music, well actually the whole album, brings us right into the first Iron Maiden album and reminds me a lot of the song, “Iron Maiden”. The band is on fire on this one and the guitar solos literally smoke. As with the Maiden album, the band infuses just enough punk with metal to get your heart racing and saying to oneself, “We have something here”. An excellent conjuring of early British metal. This song should have lead off the album. The first track named after the band is really just an intro which, though has some nice layered textures to it, should have been place somewhere in the middle of the album. Whereas the second song, “Martyrdom”, my least favorite, should have been pushed near the end. With its abrupt, too abrupt, time changes, it doesn’t really get the listener ready for the rest of the album.
A lot of songs feel much like the early Maiden but they do have their own touch to it, which I like. The song “Goomba” is exactly what I described here with its slow doom like tempo, good guitar work and solid, heavy backing…another good one! Not many bands, really none I can think of right now, play this way or have this sound. “Into The Battle” another favorite, begins with a easily listenable riff then screams into some thrashy verses which then reverts to riffs that bring ones ears to, again, Maidens “Charlotte the Harlot”. One this whole album, the band plays with ferocity and heart and seems the have a good future head of them…. except for one roadblock. Now on to the city of the left……
Whereas musically, the songs have a lot of twists and turns, this should be a singers dream. Lots of areas to let go and produce some various melody lines to go with the rhythms. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen here. Almost all the songs only have a verse and chorus, and with the musicianship here, it should have been taken advantage of, adding a pre-chorus or vocal bridges here and there. Also most of the melody lines are very similar in style. It seems like the first idea that came up with was kept. It should have been worked on until they came up with some unique and different just like the music. Vocalist Peter Keliris has a vocal style close to Paul Dianno but sounding more like Paul’s 90lb cousin as several portions are a bit weak. More angst, more dramatic pauses and phrases are very much needed on this album. Hopefully more live experiences will make this happen.
The band itself has great attitude, feel, songwriting skills and an understanding of combining elements of punk, thrash and early metal into one sound. It sounds familiar but also new, not easy to do. Guitarists Peter Keliris and Lance Steele have some catchy double leads and really fire up the fret board when the time calls for it….excellent, excellent work. And as the band morphs into the more brutal, trashy rhythms, bassist Daniel Thurgood and drummer, James Balcombe combine to roll out a heavy metal Sherman tank wall of sound.
It’s hard for me overall to give this album a rating. If it was just based on music, which I completely love, a solid 9. But adding the vocals for me just bring it down to say a 6.5. Hopefully on the next album, the music stays the same high quality while they work on the vocals and bring it to the same level of musicianship.
The organisers of the BLOODSTOCK Festival have announced the following news:
Hobgoblin is excited to unveil its electrifying new partnership with Bloodstock Open Air Festival. The collaboration sees both parties teaming up to bring METAL 2 THE MASSES at Bloodstock 2013, offering breaking bands the chance to perform on the Newblood Stage.
The road show, aptly titled ‘Hobgoblin presents Bloodstock’s METAL 2 THE MASSES’ will be visiting a host of UK and European venues to seek out the best new acts to grace the stage at Bloodstock Open Air 2013. Bands will also be in with a chance of playing a number of established European festivals in 2014, along with a wealth of additional prizes.
In addition to this, as part of its exclusive sponsorship deal, Hobgoblin will be opening up the search worldwide via Wychwood.co.uk , inviting acts to submit their videos online from December 2012. The contest will be mirrored on promotional packs of Hobgoblin from January 2013, where fans can vote for their favourite act, with the winner bagging the coveted slot on the Newblood stage. In exchange for their vote, drinkers also win the chance to take home a whole host of music-related prizes via an ‘instant win’ competition.
Chris Keating, Wychwood‘s Marketing Manager said: “Hobgoblin has been the official beer of Bloodstock for the last few years and what better way to intensify the brand’s long running association with music than by sponsoring METAL 2 THE MASSES? This competition will cement Hobgoblin’s place amongst metal fans and will give fans a chance to play what is arguably, the best metal festival in the UK, as well as be seen by some of the biggest names in the industry, which really is a chance of a lifetime.”
Bloodstock’s METAL 2 THE MASSES competition will be open to all genres of rock & metal, so if you’re in a speed, thrash, death, doom, folk, battle, gothic, groove, metalcore, industrial, neo-classical, Nu, post, power, progressive, sludge, stoner, alternative, extreme, symphonic, Viking metal or hard rock act, then get ready to bring the noise!
Adam Gregory says “Here at Bloodstock HQ, we are really excited and proud to have Hobgoblin supporting not just Bloodstock but more importantly our fans and the breaking music scene here in the UK for our genre of music. Our joint collaboration really does go to show how the music scene is developing here in the UK and how important both Bloodstock and Hobgoblin feel supporting this scene really is. 2013 will represent a great year for unsigned music in our country and we are sure we will unearth some more great talent.”

Born in the darkest depths of Essex, twisted creations of Satan’s dream… Osmium Guillotine brings their sonic attack to the ears of humanity. Take some 80’s heavy metal, sprinkle on a handful of classic rock, a zest of 70’s punk, with just a light twist of black metal. Pour in a few pints of ale and Osmium Guillotine is the resulting mess.
Osmium Guillotine are an Essex-based metal band formed in June 2009 by James and Elijah. Some notable gigs played during the band’s first year include supporting Sham 69, John Otway, Splodgenessabounds, and ex-Iron Maiden and Wolfsbane vocalist, Blaze Bayley.
In April 2010 the band released their debut 5-track EP; “How D’ya Like Them Apples?” which is still available to buy on CD (while stocks last!) and downloadable from: http://osmiumguillotine.com/album/how-dya-like-them-apples
In August 2011 they released their brand new EP featuring their new line-up and sound; “Into the Battle” http://osmiumguillotine.com/album/into-the-battle
In 2012 the band were nominated for the ‘Panic Awards’ Best Band award and performed on the finals night. Osmium Guillotine played the Mansfield “Metal Gods” Festival in May 2012.
Their latest CD “Subhuman” was released on Friday 13th July, and is available for purchase at: http://osmiumguillotine.com/album/subhuman
The album starts off with Blight Upon Mankind the song starts off slow with a slow guitar riff and clean vocals after short while the rhythm gets a little faster and the vocals get a little deeper. Getting a little further into the song the riffs from the guitars are really good, the drums have a perfect rhythm alongside the guitars. It also has some really good solos, the vocals are really good and it is a good start to the album. The second song is D-Day starts off with an excerpt from a war film then it straight into a really quick but well done guitar riff. The pace has quickened on this song and it is doing the song justice, the vocals are hit perfectly and the solos are out of this world. This song has an old style punk feel to it from the vocals, guitars and even the way the drums are played but still a quality song. The third song is Hobgoblin which starts off with a clever little riff then the vocals come in telling the story of the love of the Hobgoblin beer. Then the pace quickens without missing a heartbeat with its galloping riff it instantly gets my head nodding. The galloping riff continues right through the song the vocals tell a great story then near the end it goes back to how it was at the start of the song then finishes strong with the galloping riff at the end. The Fourth song on the album is Genocide starts off with a quality drum solo then the guitars kick in with a very quick pace this is probably the fastest song on the album so far and it is top drawer. The vocals seem to be a little bit deeper than on previous songs but it gives the song an edge. The guitar work is still of the highest standard as previous songs and the riffs and solos are really good. This is one of my favourites on the album so far top quality. The fifth song is the title song of the album called Subhuman starts off with a heavy intro guitar riff which then turns into a quick speedy riff which instantly gets my head nodding. The vocals are superb this is what a title should be like full of great riffs, Superb vocals and earth shuddering drums. Towards the middle of the song the tempo changes to a little slower and the vocals go a little bit cleaner but the standard is so strong on the song it blends in perfectly. Then the quick guitars riffs come flooding back and the vocals go back to how they were at the start of the song brilliant. The next four songs are “Live” versions of the first four songs of the album. First up is Blight Upon Mankind (Live In London) from the start of this song you can tell that the band has worked very hard to get the song from the studio to a live show perfectly and I must say they have done it it sounds great they did an amazing job. There is a lot of bands that cannot produce a live song like they did a studio version but these guys have managed it. The next live song is D-Day (Live In London) again they have done a real good job of producing the goods live on this song the guitar work is bang on perfect to the studio version and the same can be said of the vocals on whole the band again done really well. The next live song is Hobgoblin (Live In London) this song sounds really good live the vocals are sounding good the guitars and drums I cannot fault either the song sounds as good as the studio version. The last song on the album is Genocide (Live In London) the song sounds really good live and the band as a whole sound perfect in every way from the vocals, guitars and the drums each note done to a high standard.
Overall
The album overall was done to a high standard from the vocals, guitars and drums. It is full of high quality riffs and solos, the vocals are done to a high standard hitting every note perfectly. The drums keep the rhythm well and it was a nice touch to put some live performances on the end just to show how they sound live and I must say they sound really good. This just by hearing them play these songs live I would have to put them on my list to see.
