Creators, pioneers & purveyors of the Gothic Doom Metal scene which came to prominence in the early 90s, Britain’s PARADISE LOST rose from humble Northern roots to become one of the UK’s leading artists in the metal genre throughout the decade and beyond, remaining as relevant and revered as ever to this day after a career spanning over three decades.
To mark the 30 years since the release of the band’s iconic sophomore album, Gothic, Peaceville will release The Lost And The Painless – a stunning limited edition expansive 7 disc hardback book featuring 6CDs and 1DVD, containing the full works of both the formative and Peaceville years of the UK Gods. From the early incarnation of the band finding their feet in a death metal landscape which was still in its relative infancy, to their early live appearances showcasing the clear talent of the Yorkshire quintet, this deluxe set also incorporates the band’s legendary studio albums in the shape of the influential deathly doom debut, Lost Paradise, as well as the ground-breaking & genre-defining follow-up, Gothic.
The included DVD features four shows, leading with the ‘Live Death’ concert from 1989, followed by a trilogy of captured performances between 1990 & 1991, as Paradise Lost were beginning to mark their gradual ascension with a host of now classic tracks from their early repertoire.
The Lost Paradise and Gothic albums, plus the Gothic EP have been specially remastered for this set by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Studios.
Also contained in the set is a 92-page book written by prolific music journalist, Nick Ruskell, delving into those essential early years of the band, as described by vocalist Nick Holmes & guitarist Gregor Mackintosh with their recollections of their early efforts to put Paradise Lost firmly on the map, as well as additional thoughts from a selection of prominent members of the scene, including Peaceville founder Paul “Hammy” Halmshaw, Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, My Dying Bride’s Aaron Stainthorpe, & also Chris Reifert who himself embarked upon a tour with the Englishmen with Autopsy back in 1990. Furthermore, the book contains an amount of previously unseen photos recovered from the band’s early promo shoots with photographer Porl Medlock.
Nick Holmes comments “Looking at the artwork for ‘The Lost And The Painless’ and remembering those early albums and live shows, It’s amazing to think that ‘Gothic’ was released 30 years ago.
It serves as a very important chapter in the life of the band and conjures a lot of nostalgia from the early 90’s. We lived off crisps, slept in squats, on people’s floors and under vehicles. Cigarettes were £1.50 a packet, Stella Artois beer was still 5.2% proof, and travelling in a Ford Transit van with all the equipment and 10 people sitting on an old mattress was considered normal.
Distant memories aside, it was also a great time for Death Metal music in general, and ‘The Lost And The Painless’ serves as a timely reminder.”
The foreword for ‘The Lost and the Painless’ comes courtesy of long-time appreciator of all things dark & gothic, Dani Filth, vocalist of UK extreme metal masters, Cradle of Filth.
On 26th November, alongside The Lost And The Painless Peaceville will release a limited gold coloured vinyl LP and cassette of the original recording of Gothic to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

Remember, remember, the Fifth Of November? Last autumn, British metal legends PARADISE LOST exorcised the demons and ghosts of a dreary dry spell without concerts and thrilled the world with their stunning livestream “At The Mill”. Today, the band is proud to announce the captured testimony of this special night to be released as live album on July 16th!
Captured at The Mill Nightclub near the band’s hometown in Yorkshire, England, the recording of the BluRay was directed by Ash Pears, who previously worked with the band on their music videos for ‘Medusa’ and ‘Obsidian’. Mixed by Les Smith and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano, the audio version of the show will be available in various formats including CD, Blu-Ray and different vinyl colours.
To bring back first bittersweet memories from better days when concerts were still a thing, the band releases a haunting yet beautiful live version from “Darker Thoughts” that you can watch here:
“Due to the ban on live music, we, like many other bands, have had to adapt and do something we never thought we’d have to do”, reflects guitarist and songwriter Greg Mackintosh on the release. “No, not stacking shelves in Aldi like Metallica, but playing a show at a disused mill in Yorkshire with no one else there. We decided against trying to pretend there was an audience in the room with us, opting instead for a rather moribund version of a live lounge show. Whilst never being pleased with anything, we were however slightly less miserable at the result. It was also almost fun playing some of our new album Obsidian within the set for the first time too. We can now announce that we will be releasing this show as an official CD/Blu-Ray and vinyl imaginatively entitled At the Mill.”

Portuguese dark metal giants MOONSPELL, who just released their highly acclaimed, 13th studio album Hermitage through Napalm Records, have announced to join PARADISE LOST on their 2022- UK tour! While the world is waiting to see the return of live shows, there is probably no better way to celebrate a 30th band anniversary like MOONSPELL will while being back on the road next year.
Following on from both latest releases, PARADISE LOST’s magnum opus Obsidian in May 2020 and MOONSPELL’s exceptional epos Hermitage, will finally see this high class band package bring their masterpieces live on stage in February 2022. Today, the British gothic metal legends announced their “Obsidian Moon” tour, featuring longtime friends and Portuguese gothic metal titans MOONSPELL as special guests.
PARADISE LOST frontman Nick Holmes says: “We’re looking forward to doing a full UK tour again and playing some long-awaited shows in support of ‘Obsidian’, and who better to bring along for some of the ride than our old friends from Portugal, Moonspell?
Thanks to you all for your continued support during these crazy times, and we hope to see you there. Until then, stay safe and stay well. Cheers, x!”
Fernando Ribeiro from MOONSPELL adds: “We couldn’t think of a more perfect way of getting back to touring than to join forces with the mighty Paradise Lost, a group we always looked up to and that helped ignite our very own existence as a band.”
To celebrate upcoming tour schedules, with many more dates to be added in Europe soon, MOONSPELL have just unleashed an epic live video from their recent show at the Pavilhão Rosa Mota – Super Bock Arena – in Porto, Portugal, in December 2020. Get into the perfect mood for a killer live package to return live on stage in 2022, and taken from their latest album Hermitage, you can now watch the enthralling live clip for MOONSPELL’s The Greater Good here:
While the world was struggling in the dark, MOONSPELL’s new album Hermitage was recorded, mixed and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Primordial, Ghost, Sólstafir & many more) in the summer of 2020 at the Orgone Studios in the UK. It was released on February 26, 2021 through Napalm Records.
Building upon the sensitive facets of the album, Hermitage is an entertaining and revolutionary, yet epic journey through the darkest days of human existence. Beautifully crafted songs such as “The Greater Good“ show us the modernity of the wolves in 2021, while other tracks embrace the MOONSPELL tradition of writing a dark, gothic metal record like no other band can. The ethereal and melodic sounds of MOONSPELL, while not straying away from their metal roots – influenced by underground metal bands such as Bathory – make Hermitage most likely one of the deepest, surprising and most epic albums MOONSPELL has ever written. It’s a testament to what the band always loved the most: Honest, emotional metal that binds us even in the darkest times.
Catch MOONSPELL live, with many more shows to be revealed soon, on their 2022- “Obsidian Moon” UK run with dark metal titans PARADISE LOST at the following dates:
