Yes, there are plenty of emulators in any genre, but there are also those who tread the territory of the innovators before them with the respect they deserve AND plenty of talent, hard work, and new ideas to earn their place among them. Following up their 2012 EP “Purple Sky” and self-titled debut album in 2013, Sweden’s LANCER hold their own with the aptly titled “Second Storm”. What a brilliant reminder this is of the era when power metal reigned supreme and bands such as Helloween and Iron Maiden led the pack!
Taking nothing away from their past efforts, LANCER take it up another notch, sounding tighter and more focused this time around. I love the energy in the music, beyond even the crazy-fast delivery of Sebastian Pedernera’s percussive talents. Further solidifying the rhythmic foundation, Emil Öberg’s warm and snappy bass lines stand out on their own for terrific emphasis at just the right moments. The dual guitar attack and harmonic leads of Fredrik Kelemen and new member “Ewo” Solvelius (who has replaced Peter Ellström) dazzle with a classically perfect sound for the genre. Isak Stenvall more than ably fronts the band, evoking more than a slight reminiscence of his musical influences with a broad vocal range that’s impressively genuine, clear and mighty all on its own. Gustav Ydenius (STEELWING, ENFORCER) returns with his production talents to bring out the very best in every song and in each member’s sound, resulting in a fantastic mix.
Intelligent and insightful lyrics reveal stories of battles and war within the hard-driven songs. You may recognize a few of the references and be further intrigued to discover the rest. In addition to METAL SHOCK’s March 27 exclusive European premiere for ‘Iwo Jima’, here also is a hearty example of the quality and the vigor throughout LANCER’s “Second Storm”, with the tale of Sodom and Gomorrah in ‘Behind The Walls’:
Despite the subject matter, the overall spirit throughout the album feels victorious and empowering. I honestly cannot pick out a bad track on the album—I’ve truly enjoyed every one. ‘Running From The Tyrant’ is a terrific opener, and the depth of emotion that ‘Iwo Jima’ carries makes it a strong track also. The anthemic ‘Masters and Crowns’ is that one with just a bit more widespread appeal, but I particularly like ‘Steelbreaker’ – something about it suggests a touch of Gary Moore—and it’s the one I keep going back to most. ‘Aton’ is the longest and slowest tempo of the songs, sitting smack in the middle of the track listing rather than saved for the end. It is also one of the most potent featured on “Second Storm” with an epic-battle feel and storyline of an Egyptian god. Even after nearly 10 minutes, you’ll want to listen to it again. Varying tempos and structures bring the frenetic energy to a final climax on ‘Fools Marches On’, but through the mist of aftermath, prophetic lyrics suggest that there is much, much more to come.
With undoubtedly such a memorable mascot as the battle ostrich and some of the best power metal around, LANCER is a band to be talked about and most certainly listened to!
