Brazilian metallers SEPULTURA have announced that they are going to continue with a long series of concerts throughout Europe for supporting their most recent work “KAIROS”.
Derrick Green (vocals), Andreas Kisser (guitars), Paulo Xisto (bass) and Eloy Casagrande (drums) kickstarted the tour with an amazing show at Rock in Rio-Lisboa alongside french percussion group Tambours du Bronx, recently performed at Sweden Rock Festival and are confirmed to play Wacken Open Air, considered the most important heavy metal event in the world, with a very tight stage act.
So far, the tour has over 40 dates confirmed. The run started on the last July 25th in Portugal and went through Greece, Sweden, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland and now moves on to Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Romenia, Hungary, UK and ends on August 18th in Germany. It is worth mentioning that the band will take a quick break to play ORION MUSIC + MORE festival, event promoted by Metallica, which happens on July 24th in Atlantic City (USA). Check out all the tourdates at this location.
SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser joined German thrash veterans KREATOR on stage this past Friday (May 25) at the Rock In Rio Lisboa festival in Lisbon, Portugal to perform the songs “Extreme Aggression” and “People Of The Lie”. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below.KREATOR‘s new album, “Phantom Antichrist”, will be released on June 1 in Europe and June 5 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden with renowned producer Jens Bogren (OPETH, KATATONIA, SOILWORK, DEVIN TOWNSEND, AMON AMARTH).
SEPULTURA is touring in support of its 12th studio album, and Nuclear Blast Records debut, “Kairos”, which hit stores in July 2011.
SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser is featured in a new interview with Cobra Metal. An excerpt is available below:
Cobra Metal: The past couple of Sepultura albums have been concept albums. Dante XXI was based on The Divine Comedy, and A-Lex was based on A Clockwork Orange. Fill us in on the concept behind Kairos.
Andreas: “It’s almost like we picked up our own biography (book) and did an album based on ourselves. But more or less what it is…we talk about (in the lyrics) our family, our fans, traveling, labels and managers you know. Everything is there. Musically also, a little bit of everything that we ever did; all the thrash, all the death metal stuff, with the percussion and Brazilian influence. A little bit of everything is there. We worked with Japanese groups and now we’re working with a French percussive group which is amazing and totally different and stuff. I guess the concept is Sepultura itself and what we are today. The momentum and what matters. We respect our past, it’s a very rich history you know? Twenty-eight years, then coming from Brazil and doing such crazy things (laughs) that we always dreamed! And we’re still here. Regardless of the changes inside the band like members leaving or different labels and managers. Also the outside, technological changes that in this last 28 years brought us from vinyl to CD to download so quick! (laughs) From fax machines to fucking iPhones! (laughs) And we’re still here. So that’s the parallel with what we are as a band. We respect our history but we are here now and that’s what matters and it’s cool to have so many songs to choose from.”
Cobra Metal: Sepultura is in its 28th year of existence. Derrick has been in the band for 15 years now. Is the concept behind the new album a statement, “This is Sepultura, and there’s no need to reunite with Max or Igor”?
Andreas: “People have a very hard time to understand that there’s nothing dead growing. Like a reunion. We’re going down a totally different path. That’s what Sepultura is all about. That’s our spirit. We started that way and we are keeping it that way. We’re going after new things and enjoying learning new things.”
As previously reported, Sepultura has been confirmed for this year’s Wacken Open Air and they will be joined by some guests, LES TAMBOURS DU BRONX, featuring sixteen drummers from France. According to organizers, “this combination from heavy metal sounds and this incomparable percussion ensemble can only be seen two times in the whole world in this year.”
Founded in 1987, Les Tambours Du Bronx beat 225 litre barrels with beech wood bats or even axe handles. In more than 1000 concerts they’ve smashed about 16,000 barrels and more than 110,000 broken ‘drum sticks’!

Ruben Mosqueda of Oregon Music News recently conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, ex-SEPULTURA). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Oregon Music News: On your new album, “Enslaved”, you have a couple of new members joining you and guitarist Marc Rizzo. You have bassist Tony Campos replacing Bobby Burns and drummer David Kinkade replacing Joe Nunez. Did you know who you wanted or was there an audition process?
Max: Last year, we parted ways with our bass player, then shortly after, our drummer quit. It was perfect because it gave me an opportunity to reorganize SOULFLY; it gave me an opportunity to pick some very cool guys and make a great record with. I specifically picked Tony and David because they are a great fit for this kind of band — they have played extreme metal, death metal and they’re perfect for SOULFLY. When the other guys left I was already beginning to envision SOULFLY would go into the direction of death metal.
Oregon Music News: So it sounds like there were no auditions and you simply knew who you wanted on board?
Max: Right. I knew what they were capable of. Tony is a solid bass player; he approaches the bass like a guitarist does. It’s almost like we have three guitar players in the band now. David is a great extreme drummer; he was playing with BORKNAGAR in Norway — a death metal band there. David is great with double bass and blasting beats. It’s really exciting for me to play with new guys and make a heavy record like ENSLAVED. The whole process was very exciting for me; I really dig reading what people think of the record.
Oregon Music News: Obviously there will be more CAVALERA CONSPIRACYmusic. When do you foresee that taking shape?
Max: It will happen, but much later. I have a new project that I’m working with Greg Puciato from THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, which is in the vein of NAILBOMB. We’re not going to tour behind that; we’re just going to do a couple of shows. We’ll be putting the record out there just like we did with NAILBOMB — just the record with little promotion and a couple of live shows. CAVALERA will take place after that so right now it won’t be until 2013 until you see a new CAVALERA CONSPIRACY record.
Oregon Music News: The last time we spoke you talked about how you reunited with [your brother and former SEPULTURA drummer] Igor. One of the things that is on the minds of the fans, myself included, is how close you, Igor, [and other members of SEPULTURA‘s classic lineup] Andreas Kisser and Paulo Jr. are to being on speaking terms?
Max: [Pause] I’m just waiting to see what happens. If it’s meant to happen, it will happen. Right now, I feel like it won’t happen. I’m not counting on it. If it happens great, I’d be excited to do it. If it doesn’t happen, I’m happy with SOULFLY, CAVELERA CONSPIRACY, the project with Greg — my plate is full.
SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser has penned the foreword to “Brazilian Metal – Brazilian Rhythm Applied To Metal Guitar: New Ways For Riffs Of Guitar”, the new book from CLAUSTROFOBIA and QUARTETO DE GUITARRAS KROMA guitar player Alexandre de Orio.
According to a press release, the first volume of the book, which comes with a free CD, focuses on the connection between the metal and the samba with different rhythmic patterns, musical phrases from percussion instruments and drum beats. Most of the content within this book is applied towards metal guitar. The goal is to improve the technical development in this musical style and create new riffs on the guitar. The mixture of these two genres results in a unique ‘accent.’ Some examples of this Brazilian swing played along with metal will be seen in some guitar riffs created and executed in recording with the drum beats of samba also being played along with the drum beats of rock.”
This book is intended for guitar players and possibly for drum players as well.
There are no other study materials in the market about the mix of Brazilian rhythms with metal.
Brendan Crabb of Australia’s Loud magazine recently conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SEPULTURA). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Loud: I know you have an autobiography in the works. What can you tell us about that?
Max: Yeah, it’s gonna be released around Christmas. I’m finishing up all the interviews; I did like a thousand interviews, man. It was crazy; going through all my life and it has really cool details of things that happened in my life. Like how I got SEPULTURA signed for example, which was, I had to travel to America on a free ticket from Pan Am. I had to go as a Pan Am employee, so I had to wear a tie (laughs) and my hair pulled back, which was hilarious. I have the picture (of) arriving in New York with that, and everybody laughing at me. All the guys that picked me up, like Don Kaye [then-Kerrang! writer] and Monte Conner [Roadrunner A&R representative], and they’re all laughing. They’re like, this is their metal hero, showing up in a tie, you know? So that’s gonna be in the book and there will be all the funny stuff like (being) on tour with MINISTRY when I puked on Eddie Vedder [PEARL JAM]; that became a famous story.
Loud: Has he spoken to you since?
Max: No, I never talked to him after that (laughs). I actually puked on him, then he cleaned himself up, didn’t get mad, and right after that I asked for an autograph for my sister. (laughs) Which was like the absurd thing to do. I just got done puking on the guy and asked him for an autograph. But he was pretty cool; he was hanging out with the MINISTRY guys. Stuff like that is going to be in the book. Dave Grohl [FOO FIGHTERS, NIRVANA] is doing the intro of the book, I thought he would be cool because he’s a fan and I did the PROBOT thing with him, and he was really cool. He’s a huge name in music and it would be awesome to have him writing the intro of the book.
Loud: What was the hardest topic you had to delve into for the autobiography — Dana‘s [Wells, Max‘s stepson] death, the split with SEPULTURA?
Max: Those together, as they’re both connected. Very much the hardest chapter I think is going to be the death of Dana, leading into the break-up of SEPULTURA, which in my life is a low point. There have been two low points in my life; there’s been the death of my father when I was nine, which led me to get into music, and then the death of Dana and the break-up from SEPULTURA. Those are the crucial points. But from all of them, something good has come out of it. Like from the death of my father, SEPULTURA came, and from the death of Dana and break-up from SEPULTURA, SOULFLY came. So there’s good things that came out of both things, so a lot of tragedy, unfortunately, but good stuff comes out of it.
Loud: How no-holds-barred where you about it — did you hold back on certain topics at the risk of upsetting someone?
Max: No, I tried to be as honest as possible. It was really kinda hard to go through that period and bring that back, of what happened. But I tried to be as clear as (to) why I left, and why I couldn’t play with them anymore and how the feelings were towards Dana‘s death and everything. So it’s going to be very explained in the book; a lot of people, once they read, they’re going to understand why I left SEPULTURA once and for all and maybe stop asking me questions, you know?
Loud: Do you feel like your side of the story with regard to the split with SEPULTURA has never been fully told? It seems like during the past 15 years a lot of hearsay and rumours have been more or less accepted as fact.
Max: Yeah, a lot of people take rumors and just listen to rumors or stuff that’s been created over the years that are not really true. So I hope this will put an end to that. Some of the things, especially from the break-up point, a lot of what I heard in the press and that, I don’t agree with it. So I think it’s good to have this book as a vehicle of expression that I can tell the story of how I feel and what I think happened. So these people can read and understand my side of the story.
