Former Megadeth Drummer Shawn Drover joins The Metal Voice and talks about his new band WITHERING SCORN and their debut album “Prophets Of Demise”.

Also in the interview Shawn Drover gives his Top 5 Metal Hard Rock drummers of all time.

WITHERING SCORN features his brother, and fellow ex-MEGADETH member, Glen Drover, along with former FATES WARNING bassist Joe DiBiase and German singer Henning Basse, who has previously played with FIREWIND, METALIUM and MAYAN.

Withering Scorn was formed in 2020 by brothers Glen and Shawn Drover, who have played together previously in heavy metal icons Megadeth as well as in Eidolon. The pair have teamed up once again for their latest musical offering and are joined by Joe DiBiase on bass, who played with Fates Warning for 14 years on multiple records and world tours, and German native Henning Basse on vocals, who is most well-known for his work with Metalium, Firewind, and others. The potent combination of these four incredibly talented musicians joining forces has given birth to an uncompromising heavy metal record in the form of their debut offering, “Prophets Of Demise”.

WITHERING SCORN’s debut album, “Prophets Of Demise”, was released on July 7 via Frontiers Music Srl.

Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke ACT OF DEFIANCE, ex MEGADETH drummer Shawn Drover. Drover talked about his time in Megadeth, his current tour and new Act of Defiance record Old Scars, New Wounds.

When asked if it was a text from him who got Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson to reunite together in 2010
“Yes it was me. Megadeth was in a situation where we were going to go on the 20th anniversary of Rust in Peace and we were without a bass player. I said if we were going to do that tour it would be smart for the band to get David Ellefson back even if it was just for that tour. That was the mindset I took when I contacted Dave Ellefson and I asked him what do you think about possibly coming on board to do this tour, it was just an American tour at that time for a month. he was open to it. I prsented that to Dave Mustaine and they haggled out all the stuff they had in the past and a day later he was down the street rehearsing.”

When asked about his feelings towards Megadeth Super Colider today as it had mixed reviews by the fans
“That is subjective, I have nothing bad to say about it with those guys in Megadeth, it was perhaps a different musical avenue. I am always an advocate for the heavier stuff it’s no secret but I like all kinds of music. The album wasn’t as well received as the other records but it is what it is. I don’t really have anything bad to say about the album, it’s not my favorite record but that doesn’t mean I hate it either. ”

When asked with the mixed reviews on Megadeth’s Super Colider, was that one contributing factor why he left the band
“No not really, I just wanted to do my own thing and so did Chris Broderick so we decided to join forces and start a new musical endeavour, it’s as simple as that I wish I had some sort of scandalous story to tell you but I don’t.”

When asked what is next for Act of Defiance
“Keep on touring, we are going to go well into next year in support of our new album Old Scars, New wounds and then we will start coming up with a game plan to writing the next record, putting it out and touring all over again. It’s the only way, you have to go old school, you got to go out there and grind it out. The bands who are really committed to doing this are the bands you will survive at the end of the day. “

Two shocking news one after another from the MEGADETH Drummer Shawn Drover and Guitarist Chris Broderick, announcing that they have left the band. Read their official statements below:

“After 10 years, I have decided to quit Megadeth to pursue my own musical interests. I want to thank Dave Mustaine and the entire Megadeth family, as well as thanking all the amazing Megadeth fans around the world!!! I truly appreciate all of you. Stay tuned for info on my next musical journey.”

“Due to artistic and musical differences, it is with great reluctance that I announce my departure from Megadeth to pursue my own musical direction. I wish Dave and everyone in Megadeth all the best. I am working on a few things of my own and hope that when they come out, you will all dig it.”

Pop-Break.com recently caught up with Drover. An excerpt from the interview is available below:

PB: Your band recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of Countdown to Extinction by playing it in its entirety. Do you think any of the elements from Countdown rubbed off on Super Collider or will it possibly influence the new material? I know Dave is already talking about his ideas for the new music.

SD: “I don’t know because we did the celebration for that record a year ago. Obviously, we played that in a lot of areas. The thing with that, we also did the whole Rust In Peace celebration 2010 and that didn’t really rub off on the next record. It’s cool to go back and revisit, it’s a cool thing for the fans to come see, which is great. Honestly, you got to stay in the now. If you go back and try to repeat yourself, you’re just a fake and you’re trying to replicate something you have already done in the past. It’s like VAN HALEN going back and trying to re-record Van Halen 1. It’s not going to sound entirely like ‘Atomic Punk’; you just can’t do it because you’re in a different headspace. It could be aggressive or whatever you want it to be but it’s never going to be the same. I just don’t think it’s good to replicate yourself anyway.”

MEGADETH Mainman Issues New Album Update

MEGADETH has resumed work on its fourteenth studio album with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND. The CD is tentatively due in early 2013 via an as-yet-undisclosed label following MEGADETH‘s recent split with Roadrunner Records.

In a tweet earlier today, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine wrote: “Shawn [Drover, drums] and David [Ellefson, bass] have finished tracking songs 1, 2, and 3 and now it’s my turn today. I feel a burning in my soul!!! Arrrrggghhh!”

Mustaine previously told NME about the direction of MEGADETH‘s new material, “Some of it’s a little darker, some of it’s a little faster. Being in this position right now, not knowing where we’re gonna go or what we’re gonna do, it’s kind of like the world’s ours to do what we want. Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are? Are we gonna experiment and rely on the melody that we’ve discovered in MEGADETH songs?”

Mustaine also spoke about how he likes to keep MEGADETH‘s music more melodic than that of most thrash bands. “We’ve tried to do that in MEGADETH, have a little melody so that it’s not just the same old grinding music like everybody else has,” he said. “We’re just happy to get going and get to the studio.”

Johnny K produced MEGADETH‘s last album, 2011’s “TH1RT3EN”, which was recorded at Mustaine‘s Vic’s Garage studio in San Marcos, California. Mustaine previously stated about the recording process for “TH1RT3EN”, “We’ve got a great new partner with Johnny K. I mean, I was satisfied with our last co-producer, with Andy Sneap, and Andy really took us — and he even admits — as far as he could take us, and it was great because we wanted to go back to the big leagues where we were, and we feel that Johnny is, obviously, a big-league producer; not that Andy isn’t — don’t get me wrong. But we feel that this record is definitely one of our best. It’s a great feeling, because, you know, finishing some of the last record, I can honestly say, in my heart I knew that it wouldn’t contend with some of the great records in the past, just because of the timing, the label that we were on and stuff like that. Lineup changes and stuff… But I really think that everything just lined up for this record.”

“TH1RT3EN”, sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD marked the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band’s classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band’s legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002’s “Rude Awakening”.
