When asked about the release date of their new studio album
“We have a date of February 19, 2019, (original date was in October 2018) we had to move the date forward because we could not deliver the album on time and neither could the record label. February 19 will give us a little bit more time to get things done. We have recorded all the guitars, all the drums I have started the vocals, when we get back from the tour I will be doing vocals and bass. it should be done in the next month.”
When asked about the musical direction of the new album compared to the last one
“It’s in a similar vein as the last album but we are branching out, slightly, still heavy, probably slightly heavier in some songs but then you got, typical Grim Reaper stuff in their too.”
When asked about recording a live album in France at the British Steel Festival
“After we finish a few Canadian gigs we are going to Paris to do a show there called the British Steel Festival and there we will be recording a live album and also recording in a few other cities afterwards. We are also thinking of re-recording our favorites songs off the first three Grim Reaper albums.”
When asked about writing a book about his whole experience losing his leg in Ecuador
“The Book will be about the struggle with my handicap and there will be some sex drugs and rock and roll. But it will be mainly about what I have been through in the past year and a half.”

When asked about his relationship with the late producer Chris Tsangarides (1:26)
“I have known about Chris for a really long time. We started getting in touch in 2016 and we got on really well. I talked to him about mixing the next Reaper album and I was really looking forward to it cause he was going to teach me all he knew about mixing in the process and it’s a real dam shame it didn’t happen. ”
“When I had lost my leg Chris got in touch with me at least once a week for the rest of 2017 and he was such a nice guy he wasn’t interested in how the music was going or anything else all he wanted to know was how I was doing. I did the same thing for him because he had some problems before he died and I stayed in touch and made sure he was ok. Then to hear that he had passed away suddenly it was absolutely gutting. When I think about it or see his pictures it really gets to me. We lost a lot of good friends over the past few years but I think Chris has affected me more than anybody else. As far as I’m concerned we lost one of the biggest rock influences that there will ever be.”
When how far ahead were they in making the new album with Chris Tsangarides mixing (4:04)
“The deal was done. Chis was going to mix it, it was suppose to be in October 2017 but I had to put it off because we were building a new recording studio and everything was put on the back burner, what a dam shame .”
When asked about the timeline of the new Grim Reaper album (4:52)
We have gotten 7 or 9 songs written, basically we want to write 16 or 17 songs to then come out with 12 songs which would give us an extra track for Japan. I would like to maybe start recording in March 2018, it will probably take three months to finish after that and then the record company will get on to release it in 2018. (summer)
When asked about the experience of losing his leg in the hospital in Ecuador one year ago Jan 17 (7:46)
“When I was in the hospital I had absolutely no one there to speak to I couldn’t even contact Millie my wife because when I went in the hospital they took my phone from me because the hospital told them not it have it on me because it would be stolen. I couldn’t even talk to my wife about having these operations. The guys and the promoters disappeared after 5 days, so I had nobody to talk to it was awful but I had to dig in and find that inner strength. ”
“I had three operations, five altogether but three of them were under epidural, which numbs the body below. For the first two operations they were sawing my leg off and I could hear them cutting through the bone. Then I got the Flesh Eating Disease that’s when they had to cut me above knee (Femur) which is a real BIG bone, they got the saw stuck in it twice cause it was all hand saw. There was nothing modern about the techniques in Ecuador. I did not want to watch it. When they actually cut through the Femur I could actually feel that vibration and I said to myself now you gotta dig deep inner strength. I was thinking about all the veterans that came home with their legs blown to bits and who am I to sit and cry about it ? “

When asked how Steve Grimmett’s recovery was coming along (11:50 mark)
“It’s going really good, I’m in training now getting my new leg (prosthetic), which I should have in about 4 weeks time. Then I can only put it on and take it off until I go to the Swindon hospital, where I am having my therapy and they will teach me how to walk. I know that is not easy and I know there is a lot of pain involved, I’m up for that, let’s get going. I’m still living on the ground floor at my house cause I can’t get up the stairs but that’s ok. I’m waiting for a company to install a chair lift and they make doors and bathroom wider so I can take a shower cause I haven’t had a shower since this happened, I fucken stink (laughs) I do wash.”
When asked when Steve would be returning to the stage for his first performance (14:20)
“We got a show in the middle of July 2017, in Germany at the Bang you head Festival, we are going to play whatever happens cause we have committed to it now but my team thinks that they can get me ready for that, which would be fantastic if not I will do it in a wheelchair. ”
When asked if Grim Reaper will be releasing a live album anytime soon (15:47)
“I do have a live album in the can, I got it ready to mix, I may start on that in a couple of months time, mix it and get it out (last tour of the United States).”
When asked about a new album and a new book (18:56)
“Ian Nash (guitar) and I, in the next couple of weeks are going to start the new album. I’m writing a book too that has taken a little bit of my time and it won’t be a normal sex drugs and rock and roll. It will be about this experience and some sex drugs and rock and roll (laughs). It’s going to be about losing of the leg and telling diabetics to shape up cause this could happen to them too.”

Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke with legendary producer Chris Tsangarides. Chris shared his thoughts about producing such classic albums as Anvil‘s Metal on Metal, Judas Priest Painkiller, Thin Lizzy‘s Renegade and Canada’s The Tragically Hip‘s Fully Completely. Tsangarides also spoke about producing the relief songs for Steve Grimmett.
Watch the interview here:
When asked if Anvil’s classic album Metal on Metal influenced the whole speed metal genre
“At the time you really don’t know, you haven’t got a clue. it’s only when you can look back and think, you know what that was the first record that did that. Metal On Metal did have a big influence on people cause there wasn’t much of it going on. But then as you see in the Anvil Movie, artists being interviewed about Anvil and given their honest opinions and coming out with we used to play their albums. I know that Lars Ulrich (Metallica) had gone into Johnny Z office with a Copy of Metal on Metal and said that’s who we want to produce our album with and Johnny Z said no, he said it would be too expensive. I was like what no one asked me? Who knows what it could have been if I produced Metallica’s Kill Em All (debut). Would it have come out the same way? I’m sure it would have not come out like that.”
When asked about him producing Judas Priest Album Painkiller
“It was bloody marvelous nine weeks we were there I don’t remember a single argument.”
“In the song Painkiller where Rob Halford is singing Pain, Pain, Killer, Killer getting all intense, the production note to Rob was can you sound like a Dalek from the Dr Who Series. Rob Halford left after Painkiller he wanted to go down the Pantera route, he said we should sound more like Pantera and I would say they are trying to sound more like you. That’s what happens with artists, they listen to some new fresh band and they want be them. You don’t want to be Judas Priest sings Pantera, be yourself.”
When asked about producing the Reaper All Stars relief songs for Steve Grimmett’s medical and recovery costs
“We have been in talks Steve and I, in the past year about making the new Grim Reaper album. This certainly isn’t the way that any of us predicted that we would get to meet up like this, in this awful circumstance. All I can say is that I cannot believe how great he has been, given what has happened to him. I know cause I was in a similar position when I was in my a coma a few years ago apparently my leg was going cold and there was fears that they would have to cut my leg off because of thrombosis due to the machines they had me plugged into and that wouldn’t have been happening. Thing is, I have the same illness as Steve, I’m diabetic insulin all that and I really feel for what has happened to him and as soon as I heard what had gone down I was like I just can’t believe how quickly, you got a pain in your foot and then the next thing you know it’s gone the way it has. As soon as it happened in the hospital I knew that something had to be done cause in a foreign country on you own especially when the rest of the band had been flown back home, his wife wasn’t there yet. To be all on your own like that in that dire circumstance really got to everybody and I am so proud of the metal community for jumping in straight ahead, how can we make some money for this situation and that is what we are doing and I want Steve to know that is is all being done out of respect, love for our fellow musician, warrior, metal head and off we go. ”
“I had the drum tracks sent and a couple of guitars that Glen Drover (Ex Megadeth) has done and just waiting for the rest of the stuff to come so I compile it and mix it.”
