Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to Steve Grimmett singer of Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper and guitarist Ian Nash in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on August 28 2019 at the Piranha Bar.

Grimmett spoke about the bands new album At the Gates, his post traumatic stress from losing his leg and the loss of his brother. As well as looks back at the recording of the Grim Reaper classic See You In Hell.

When asked about some the lyrical content off the up and coming new  Grim Reaper Album  ‘At the Gates’  as well as the musical direction
“The new album will be released the 11th of October 2019, I wrote 6 of the songs on the album and  the other guys in the band wrote some too. This new album has been recorded the same way as the last one, old school. It’s not the Grim Reaper sound as it used to be, this time it has a modern twist. The album is a lot more heavier, it branches out  cause we have to grow and that was intentional. I think the next album we will branch out even more.”

The meanings of the songs

At the Gates– I had my leg amputated and I was very close to dying and that is what the song is about .

Venom– It’s about somebody who really pissed me off and who’s got mental issues that they need to clear up .

Knock at the Door- That’s again knocking on the door or either heaven or hell and me being at the point were I was 24 hours from death. 

What lies beneath- It’s about darkness, something dragging you down, a weight on you.

Hand that rocks the cradle- its about your mom it’s explaining that mother influence.

Rush- The band wrote this one, I think its about being metal and doing what we do best.

Only when I sleep- This is a resurrected song that we did on a Lionsheart album that slipped through the cracks and it was such a shame. It’s about seeing yourself when you sleep outer body experience. Anxiety.

Under the Hammer-It’s about what life deals you and how you are always under the hammer for something’

Shadow in the dark– Deep dark dreams and how they haunt you.

When asked about his current mental health state

“My band has stepped in regarding songwriting when I couldn’t produce the goods on helping to write this album. I have suffered quite badly with mental issues after losing my leg I got post traumatic stress disorder, that is still ongoing and nearly a year ago I lost my brother and that put my in a downward spiral and I have been suffering quiet a bit since. I have been to counselling to help out which has helped out cause I would’t have been able to be here if it didn’t.”

Jimmy Kay From Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to vocalist Steve Grimmett, from Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper on October 1 2018 at the Piranha Bar in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on their North American tour.

Grimmett spoke about the release date of the new Studio album, recording a live album in Paris France, re-recording the classic songs, his upcoming book, as well as touring with his handicap.

When asked about the release date of their new studio album
“We have a date of February 19, 2019, (original date was in October 2018) we had to move the date forward because we could not deliver the album on time and neither could the record label. February 19 will give us a little bit more time to get things done. We have recorded all the guitars, all the drums I have started the vocals, when we get back from the tour I will be doing vocals and bass. it should be done in the next month.”

When asked about the musical direction of the new album compared to the last one
“It’s in a similar vein as the last album but we are branching out, slightly, still heavy, probably slightly heavier in some songs but then you got, typical Grim Reaper stuff in their too.”

When asked about recording a live album in France at the British Steel Festival
“After we finish a few Canadian gigs we are going to Paris to do a show there called the British Steel Festival and there we will be recording a live album and also recording in a few other cities afterwards. We are also thinking of re-recording our favorites songs off the first three Grim Reaper albums.”

When asked about writing a book about his whole experience losing his leg in Ecuador
“The Book will be about the struggle with my handicap and there will be some sex drugs and rock and roll. But it will be mainly about what I have been through in the past year and a half.”

Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to NWOBHM singer Steve Grimmett of Steve Grimmett’s GRIM REAPER. Grimmett spoke about the late producer Chris Tsangarides and how he was scheduled to mix the bands new album, His one year anniversary on Jan 17 of his tragic leg loss and the gory details of the operations, plus details about Grim Reaper’a New album and a potential book

When asked about his relationship with the late producer Chris Tsangarides (1:26)
“I have known about Chris for a really long time. We started getting in touch in 2016 and we got on really well. I talked to him about mixing the next Reaper album and I was really looking forward to it cause he was going to teach me all he knew about mixing in the process and it’s a real dam shame it didn’t happen. ”

“When I had lost my leg Chris got in touch with me at least once a week for the rest of 2017 and he was such a nice guy he wasn’t interested in how the music was going or anything else all he wanted to know was how I was doing. I did the same thing for him because he had some problems before he died and I stayed in touch and made sure he was ok. Then to hear that he had passed away suddenly it was absolutely gutting. When I think about it or see his pictures it really gets to me. We lost a lot of good friends over the past few years but I think Chris has affected me more than anybody else. As far as I’m concerned we lost one of the biggest rock influences that there will ever be.”

When how far ahead were they in making the new album with Chris Tsangarides mixing (4:04)
“The deal was done. Chis was going to mix it, it was suppose to be in October 2017 but I had to put it off because we were building a new recording studio and everything was put on the back burner, what a dam shame .”

When asked about the timeline of the new Grim Reaper album (4:52)
We have gotten 7 or 9 songs written, basically we want to write 16 or 17 songs to then come out with 12 songs which would give us an extra track for Japan. I would like to maybe start recording in March 2018, it will probably take three months to finish after that and then the record company will get on to release it in 2018. (summer)

When asked about the experience of losing his leg in the hospital in Ecuador one year ago Jan 17 (7:46)
“When I was in the hospital I had absolutely no one there to speak to I couldn’t even contact Millie my wife because when I went in the hospital they took my phone from me because the hospital told them not it have it on me because it would be stolen. I couldn’t even talk to my wife about having these operations. The guys and the promoters disappeared after 5 days, so I had nobody to talk to it was awful but I had to dig in and find that inner strength. ”

“I had three operations, five altogether but three of them were under epidural, which numbs the body below. For the first two operations they were sawing my leg off and I could hear them cutting through the bone. Then I got the Flesh Eating Disease that’s when they had to cut me above knee (Femur) which is a real BIG bone, they got the saw stuck in it twice cause it was all hand saw. There was nothing modern about the techniques in Ecuador. I did not want to watch it. When they actually cut through the Femur I could actually feel that vibration and I said to myself now you gotta dig deep inner strength. I was thinking about all the veterans that came home with their legs blown to bits and who am I to sit and cry about it ? “
