German Folk and Medieval Rock frontrunners SUBWAY TO SALLY will release their long awaited and highly anticipated 14th studio album Himmelfahrt[EN: Ascension] in March 2023, before heading out on a big headline tour in Germany in April 2023.
The new album marks a turning point, by leaving the dystopian lyrics of predecessor HEY! (2019) behind. Himmelfahrt marks an end and a new beginning at the same time. After the oppressive years, which were characterized by narrowness and stagnation, the new songs are about departure and journey, about reaching out to others to lead them from the deepest depths into the light.
Musically, the Germans deliver the perfect mixture of popular hits and great melodies, showing SUBWAY TO SALLY on top of their game. You can feel their thirty years of stage and studio experience in every note, and their irrepressible hunger for the stage and their audience. Fans can witness one of the best live bands of the genre on their extensive headline tour in April 2023. Stay tuned for more info on the new album!

Co-founders of the German medieval rock movement SUBWAY TO SALLY celebrate the 20th anniversary of their hit album, Herzblut, which has reached more than 6.3 million streams on Spotify alone, with an epic reissue of their song “So Rot” alongside an atmospheric music video! Throughout their nearly 30-year career, the formation from Potsdam has recorded 13 studio albums, performed at over 1600 concerts worldwide and toured numerous times at the biggest metal & rock festivals such as Rock am Ring, Greenfield, Nova Rock and Wacken Open Air, where they stood on stage as proud record-keepers more times than any other band in the world!
With the high-quality production on the new version, SUBWAY TO SALLY shows a new facet of their classic fan favorite “So Rot”. The introduction is provided by crackling backdrops and frontman Eric’s narrative vocals, accompanied by warm guitars and ambient percussion. However, the atmospheric soundscape gains more and more strength as it progresses and promises a multi-faceted performance alternating between gripping electric guitars, clashing cymbals and rousing kickdowns that always go hand in hand with medieval background music. New and old fans are guaranteed to be thrilled!
SUBWAY TO SALLY on “So Rot XXMMI”: “If you go by sales figures, HERZBLUT is one of our most successful albums to date. But not only that, the record is also very popular with our fans. No wonder, since numerous SUBWAY TO SALLY classics can be found on it. The track “So Rot” is one of the secret favorites of both us and our fans. It was a heartful wish for us to transport this song into the year 2021 on its anniversary. We think we have succeeded well with the new edition and are sure that our fans are happy about this little present.”
A few months ago, SUBWAY TO SALLY released their traditional Eisheilge Nacht for the first time as a virtual concert experience, including top-class guests. The result has become a strong DVD/BluRay/CD.

Chart-breaking German folk rock institution SUBWAY TO SALLY demonstrate their exceptional live presence once more, carving a unique stage experience in stone with their new BluRay/DVD/CD release, Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark (#6 GER album charts).
In an intimate setting, the Potsdam based unit drops a colorful bunch of songs taken from their multifaceted discography and invites its listeners to be part of an exciting adventure, offering some great surprises and performances never heard or seen – till now! One of those highlights embodies the new live-video for the emotional track “Kein Meer zu Tief” (engl. “No Ocean Too Deep”), a song originally by German artist MajorVoice, in which SUBWAY TO SALLY are accompanied by the bass/baritone vocalist.
SUBWAY TO SALLY on the performance: “At the Eisheilige Nacht 2017 we had Mono Inc. as a guest, who, in addition, had a guest themselves be part of their show. Someone we didn’t know till then. A really tall man with an equally great voice was asked on stage during their set. That’s how we got to know MajorVoice and immediately invited him to be part of our HEY! tour 2019. In the meantime, we have become close friends. Unfortunately our planned continuation of the joint HEY! tour in 2020 couldn’t take place. His appearance at Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark is far too small a consolation, but at least it reminds us of better times and stirs the anticipation on what we can do together musically in the future.”

In 2020, SUBWAY TO SALLY returned to Lindenpark and – supported by many great artists like Chris Harms (Lord Of The Lost), Feuerschwanz, Schandmaul, Saltatio Mortis, MajorVoice and Patty Gurdy – created an extraordinary lockdown live experience with Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark. In an intimate setting, the recording starts with “Messias” and “Königin der Käfer” from the band’s latest chart-breaking full-length, Hey! (DE #5). SUBWAY TO SALLY then continue to not only travel through their own discography with songs like eerie “Unsterblich”, animated “Tanz auf dem Vulkan” and live-sensation “Grausame Schwester”, but also present a bunch of enchanting features as well: Don’t miss when highly talented Birgit Muggenthaler-Schmack and Saskia Maria Forkert (Schandmaul) join SUBWAY TO SALLY for Schandmaul’s “Dein Anblick” and a premier version of “Kleid aus Rosen”, or when the band sets the exceptional stage on fire for an explosive performance with Saltatio Mortis on their hit “Sie tanzt allein” – just to name a selection.
SUBWAY TO SALLY on Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark: “After 11 years of our “EISHEILIGE NACHT-tradition”, we definitely did not want that 2020 will be seen as a red “X” in the history of our festival series. So we thought about how we could provide our fans with the EISHEILIGE NACHT feeling at their homes, when we weren’t allowed to tour ourselves. An online concert wasn’t enough for us: EISHEILIGE NACHT is not only about meeting friends, but also being a highlight of the year – with several befriended bands performing live on stage.
We wanted to implement all of this in one experience. We wanted to record this very special event where the EISHEILIGE NACHT originally began. Instead of playing a concert in an empty hall, we used the size of the hall, lined up in a circle and placed our guest musicians into our midst. This created new insights that have never been seen before in any SUBWAY TO SALLY concert film! We are very pleased that we can now, as requested by countless fans, record this event for eternity as a special concert film! “

In an intimate setting, the Potsdam based unit drops a colorful bunch of songs taken off their multifaceted discography and invites its listeners to be part of an exciting adventure, offering some great surprises and performances never heard or seen – till now! One of those highlights embodies the new live-video for the LORD OF THE LOST hit “Drag Me To Hell“, originally cut from their full-length Empyrean (2016), in which SUBWAY TO SALLY are accompanied by Chris Harms.
SUBWAY TO SALLY on the exceptional performance: “With LORD OF THE LOST and especially their frontman Chris Harms, we share a long and extremely productive musician friendship. This has mainly mutual admiration and respect as its origin, because we have been watching Chris very closely for a long time and are happy that he always knows how to surprise us with great music and great productions, even outside his band. The song ‘Drag Me To Hell’ was Chris’ personal wish and we had a lot of fun rehearsing it and celebrating it with Chris – due to Corona quarantine from afar – at the EHNO! A number that pushes incredibly and, you may not believe it, fits extremely well for SUBWAY TO SALLY. Somehow we have a feeling that this will not be the last coop with our friend from Hamburg.“

SUBWAY TO SALLY have released the second video from their new live Blu-Ray, Eisheilige Nacht – Back To Lindenpark. This special, intimate version of the fan-favorite “Kleid aus Rosen” (EN: Dress of Roses) offers an absolute world premiere: Ally Storch, as well as Saskia and Birgit from Schandmaul, intonate the legendary three-part polyphony at the beginning of the song for the first time ever live.
This version of “Kleid aus Rosen” stands for what Eisheilige Nacht – Back To Lindenpark is all about: an intimate setting, special guests and unique production.
Bodenski on “Kleid aus Rosen”: “There are lyrics that you write in one ride. I can still remember exactly how I put this story on paper. In my mind’s eye I saw a balladeer standing in the marketplace with a display board and telling his audience this gruesome story, perhaps as a lesson and warning for young girls.
I actually believed at the time that the lyrics would not be suitable for SUBWAY TO SALLY. I was so wrong. When I heard Ingo’s brilliant composition to this text, I was thrilled. It is rightly one of our most popular songs. Everything about this song is just right. In the studio, Sigrid Hausen, better known as Syrah, helped us to sing the three-part intro. Until the Eisheilige Nacht Online, this intro was always recorded. It was a special experience for us to hear it live for the first time!”

When two greats of the German folk rock and medieval scene get together, there’s nothing but magic taking place – not even a prevailing pandemic can change that! Today, SUBWAY TO SALLY drop their captivating performance of the Saltatio Mortis hit “IX”, cut from the band’s upcoming, unique Blu-Ray/DVD/CD highlight, Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark, out June 18, 2021 via Napalm Records.
The original song can be found on the Saltatio Mortis full-length Das Schwarze Einmaleins (2013) and is now captured for eternity, presented by both bands as an exclusive version on Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark.
SUBWAY TO SALLY add: “We covered ‘IX’ and put it into our very own SUBWAY TO SALLY version. Our long-time companions from Saltatio Mortis wanted us to cover the song for a bonus CD that’s part of their album Zirkus Zeitgeist (2015). Within a short time, the track became very popular amongst our fans and even pushed a few of our classics out of our streaming top 5 temporarily. After a joint tour playing the track together with Saltatio Mortis, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to keep it in our regular live set for some time. Or in other words: a Saltatio Mortis cover version became part of the SUBWAY TO SALLY set! I don’t think there can be a better alliance within our scene and so we were really looking forward to performing the song again with our friends at Eisheilige Nacht – Back to Lindenpark.“
