As Silence Breaks are a thrash/melodic death metal/heavy metal band of five, hailing from Sydney, Australia. The Architecture of Truth is the band’s third release; their first being ‘The Inferno (E.P.) in 2009, followed by their self titled album ‘As Silence Breaks’, released in 2011 after signing to New Justice Records about 18 months ago.

The band have excellent metal credentials, having toured around Australia for the past 6 years, sharing stages with the likes of Sybreed, TesseracT, periphery, Darkest Hour and For The Fallen Dreams. Also worthy of a mention is the fact they played on the ‘Taste of Chaos’ tour in Sydney for two consecutive years.

The Architecture of Truth is an amalgamation of the three previously mentioned genres of metal they have become so accustomed and proficient at playing, garnering themselves a loyal fan base along the way. Their sound is pretty much a pure, solid heavy metal base, plus thrash and melodic death metal thrown into the mix. It should be said however, that on this, their third offering, everything just seems that touch more polished and together.

The first track ‘Litany of Fear’ begins softly with a solo guitar playing, and if you knew nothing whatsoever about the band it may well come as a total shocker when it suddenly kicks up a notch (or several!) and the growling vocals of Sam Rilatt begin.

Into track 2, which is ‘Decimate’, and this track also continues the assault on the aural senses; grabbing the listeners attention with some cracking guitar riffs and blistering drumming from Reece Kirby. Track 3, ‘Freedom’, is a bit of a surprise, as alongside the excellent growling vocals of Rilatt there are some clear and surprisingly good backing vocals. Alas I am unsure which of the other band members is actually providing these.

Next is ‘Biomechanical’, again a track with a softer sound, yet still with a thrashy guitar intro, and again containing more ‘clean vocals’, which work well yet again.  Track 5 Instrument of ‘Vengeance’ is next to assail the senses; definitely one of the heavier tracks on the album. Followed by track 6, Purpose in which the thrash influences literally scream themselves out at the listener.

Altogether there are 12 tracks on The Architecture of Truth, and although it does get a touch ‘samey’ towards the middle surely that is the whole point; the listener is getting exactly what they wanted and paid for!

That said, Track 8, The Warning has some, in my humble opinion some bona fide Grade A blistering drums, the tempo being simply awesome! ‘Fire Borne Chaos’ is next, followed by ‘Purgatory’, and then the heavy tones of ‘Discord‘, with its heavy bass tones and yet again frenzied drumming. The final track on the album is ‘Redeemer‘, an all-together more up-tempo number and very likely my favourite track on the entire album.

In summary: Sam Rilatt is an excellent ’growling’ vocalist/front man, but as previously mentioned, there are also some very good clean vocals too – and where these have been slotted in they work exceedingly well. The Frenzied drumming of Kirby and the crushing guitar riffs of Ben Irwin & Dan O’Brien all go towards making this an album that once it has finished I found I had to press play once more!
