Former Iron Maiden Drummer Doug Sampson (Airforce) does a walk though and talks about the legacy of East London’s Cart and Horses club where Iron Maiden played in the very early years. Also in the video Cart and Horses manager Kasto Perjoini does a quick history of the club as well.
Reporting for The Metal Voice in London/ photographer Fernando Bonenfant
Sampson told The Metal Voice,” I first become aware of it (Cart and Horses) when a band called Slowbone first played here and it was a place to come on a Friday night and it was absolutely packed, people were flocking onto the streets. So that was my first awareness of the Cart. When I was about 17 I joined a band called Smiler that was with Steve Harris and we’ve done our first gig here, that was on a Sunday night and it we went down quite well. So when Slowdown couldn’t couldn’t make the Friday night spot we was asked to fill for them. After about 30- 40 gigs Smiler had disbanded and Steve decided he wanted to go off and form another band (Iron Maiden). Steve asked me if I wanted to join his new band at the time, I didn’t really want to, I wanted to have a break from the music. So I used to come down virtually every week to see him, so I knew the set pretty damn well. I remember them getting such a good crowd, they had to get noticed sooner or later because so many people were coming down it was just amazing. I used to watch him and I always used to think uh yeah I wouldn’t mind playing with this band. The Cart was basically everything for the East end, this Pub is like there’s so many great bands that have started here and some have gone on to bigger things but there’s been some fantastic bands over the years. I mean you could come in here three or four nights a week and see top-notch Talent. “
The Iron Maiden band were originally formed on Christmas Day 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. The band held their first gig at the Cart and Horses Pub and subsequently took up semi-residency in 1976.
Former Megadeth Drummer Shawn Drover joins The Metal Voice and talks about his new band WITHERING SCORN and their debut album “Prophets Of Demise”.
Also in the interview Shawn Drover gives his Top 5 Metal Hard Rock drummers of all time.
WITHERING SCORN features his brother, and fellow ex-MEGADETH member, Glen Drover, along with former FATES WARNING bassist Joe DiBiase and German singer Henning Basse, who has previously played with FIREWIND, METALIUM and MAYAN.
Withering Scorn was formed in 2020 by brothers Glen and Shawn Drover, who have played together previously in heavy metal icons Megadeth as well as in Eidolon. The pair have teamed up once again for their latest musical offering and are joined by Joe DiBiase on bass, who played with Fates Warning for 14 years on multiple records and world tours, and German native Henning Basse on vocals, who is most well-known for his work with Metalium, Firewind, and others. The potent combination of these four incredibly talented musicians joining forces has given birth to an uncompromising heavy metal record in the form of their debut offering, “Prophets Of Demise”.
WITHERING SCORN’s debut album, “Prophets Of Demise”, was released on July 7 via Frontiers Music Srl.
Neil Turbin reporting for Canada’s The Metal Voice in Los Angeles at Book Soup (July13 2023) filmed the fan Q and A/ book signing of Metal Blade RecordsBrian Slagel who launched his new book ‘Swing of the Blade’.
Also at the Q and A was Armored Saint’s John Bush, Betsy Bitch and host Don Jamieson.
Swing of the Blade follows Brian Slagel’s critically acclaimed 2017 book, For the Sake of Heaviness, which delivered a compelling inside look at how a metal-obsessed California teen built Metal Blade Records into the preeminent international home of heavy music. Rabid readers demanded more anecdotes, more bands, and more of Slagel’s musical wisdom. With Swing of the Blade, he delivers. Featuring a foreword by Slayer’s Kerry King, the new book is part memoir, part music-business primer, and all metal – delving deep into scenes and bands that fans worldwide obsess about. Slagel serves up more of his favorite memories about iconic musicians and events, and delves into even greater detail about his long and ongoing relationships with Metallica, Armored Saint, King Diamond and other heavyweights. Swing of the Blade is told in Slagel’s humble but authoritative voice. His view for the last 40 years–from the studio, side-stage and boardroom–offers an unprecedented look into the music, business, and passion that has made both Slagel and Metal Blade champions of discovering and nurturing the best heavy music on the planet. Canada’s The Metal Voice recently interviewed GIRLSCHOOL’s guitarist, vocalist co-founder Kim McAuliffe. In the interview McAullife talks about the bands beginnings, their relationship with Lemmy from Motorhead over the years and the bands new upcoming studio album WTFortyfive.
Girlschool’s new album WTFortyfive? will be released on July 28th via Silver Lining music.
Forty-five years young, British hard rock royalty GIRLSCHOOL comes out swinging with their fourteenth studio album, WTFortyfive?, a deliciously dirty declaration that age is a number that shows how much real raw attitude you have when it really counts.
When asked about the legacy of late guitarist Kelly Johnson “Well she left the band and then went on with her life for a few years then came back again and rejoined but then sadly got ill. She was everything to the band because obviously we started it off together. We were all in South London and she lived in North London so of course that’s bloody miles away, North London it’s like a different country to us. So she came and lived with me and Mum and Dad and um yeah so we shared a room and of course we were really young at that point at that time. We had the right old laugh and we just sort of did a lot of growing up together really. She was and still is like an iconic image and her playing I still sort of get Shivers up my spine. She just was unique really. She would just pick up an instrument and just play it straight away.”
When asked how Lemmy from Motorhead helped the band in the early days “People think that just suddenly (Lemmy) saw us and then it all happened all overnight you know well no it wasn’t as simple as that. We were actually touring around as Girlschool especially around Europe in my mum and Dad’s stolen van, poor Mum and Dad. They bought this van that they were going to turn into a camper van and go and touring around well. That sort of went out the window because we ended up commandeering it and just touring all over the place and put it into the ground. So we were touring for a couple of years but the thing is over here especially every time we played a punk Club they thought we were heavy metal we played heavy metal clubs they thought we were punks so we couldn’t win either way you know . But good friends of ours, a band called UK Subs they just recorded a single with a little independent company called ‘City Records and then ‘City Records’ asked us because we were great mates with them, asked us if we wanted to record a single and of course we jumped at it because you know it’s every band’s dream isn’t it you know um to get in the recording studio. So we knocked out ‘Take it all away’ (song) the single got some radio play and then Lemmy and Motorhead were looking for a band to support them on their first major British tour which was the Overkill tour and then he heard the single and then sort of saw pictures of us. Meanwhile we’d have already got given the 10 inch single of theirs a vinyl the Motorhead single and we thought bloody hell you know that’s a great Racket and then of course saw the photo of them thought oh my God look at them sort of thing you know. The next thing we know Lemmy’s invited himself down to one of our rehearsals so we didn’t know what to expect we were going oh God you know after just seeing the photos of him um but yeah of course we just got on like a house on fire. And he invited us onto the tour, cool tour and so that was that and so we were suddenly thrust into the bigger stages and the proper touring and finally we sort of found our niche because again it was like Motorhead were the same they were sort of crossover between the punk and rock.”
When asked about Lemmy’s most endearing qualities “Oh he was the funniest I mean he was just hilarious he’s have you in stitches. Just really funny and really nice and so supportive and it wasn’t just us he supported as females he went on to support quite a lot of other females in rock. He did his bit for women and rock that’s for sure.” When asked if she could define the new album in one sentence “The new album is a slab of heavy metal rock and roll.
Lead single “Are You Ready?” sets the pace; a racy, raunchy, fun-saturated shapeshifter co-written with Alcatrazz’s Joe Stump that shows GIRLSCHOOL’s leathers may still carry the well-baked battle scars of decades past, but their songs and attitude are as fresh, fun, heavy, and catchy as ever before. There’s the addictive mototörcharged scuzz of “It Is What It Is”, the Wandsworth via Sunset Strip sway of “Bump In The Night,” the youthful, punky romp of “Up To No Good,” and the smart, sassy, rock ‘n’ roll hooks of “Believing In You,” with McAuliffe’s vocals sounding as sharp and raucous as ever. And if that isn’t enough, their raunch roars and rolls alongside Biff Byford (Saxon), Phil Campbell (Motörhead), and Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) on a cracking cover of “Born To Raise Hell!” So throw away your inhibitions and join these spectacularly wild women on the most glorious of rock ‘n’ roll rides. Lemmy knew, so should YOU! WTFortyfive? will be released on 12” vinyl, digipak-CD, digital download and streaming and special D2C bundles.

Jimmy Kay for Canada’s The Metal Voice recently interviewed The Dead Daisies frontman and former Motley Crue singer John Corabi on the streets of Montreal, Canada on July 3, 2023 prior to performing acoustic at The Piranha Bar. Watch the video interview below.
Corabi has asked about his portrayal in the 2019 Motley Crue movie The Dirt and if he should have been included, he told The Metal Voice, “I think they could have just shown the band split up and then show them talking to get back together again (without including him). The only thing that bugs me about that movie is that they took the unfortunate liberty to make it look like I was playing in high school gymnasiums to like eight people. I’m fine, it is what it is. It doesn’t bother me at all anymore. I’m like whatever. I thought that was a little bit overblown their perception or their view of that time. I mean it’s kind of funny if you go on to YouTube and type in John Corabi Motley Crue Live 94. it’s like yeah none of the shows were sold out but we still played to three, four, five, six thousand people, seven thousand people depending on the size of the Arena. I just thought that was a little shitty and then the other thing is if they were going to put me in the movie which they did I’m just angry that they didn’t get Morgan Freeman to play me. You know he’s always wise in every movie, he’s just cool in every movie.”
Corabi was then asked about all the Mick Mars and Motley Crue drama, he said, “I said what I had to say in the very beginning when that first press release came out that Mick wasn’t going to tour due to his health and yada yada. Somebody asked me a question, I made the statements and now I’m keeping my mouth shut but none of the drama surprises me, do you know what I mean? That’s all I gotta say.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to Voivod Drummer Michel ‘Away’ Langevin about the bands new special anniversary studio album ‘Morgoth Tales’ that will be released July 21, 2023 via Century Media.
Away also spoke about Voivod’s upcoming album re-releases, AI and gave an update on writing new music and the releaser date of the upcoming Voivod documentary.
When asked about the new album’ Morgoth Tales’ that features re-recordings songs from the band’s catalog “The result is really great. The whole album you can really see the progression of the band over the years because we did the album tracks in chronological order, plus we wrote a song on tour for this album to show who we are now. Morgoth Tales is a great sounding album but the challenge is not to recapture the youthful energy and all that but it’s to give the people our impression of these songs now.”
When asked about choosing the songs for the new re-recording studio album ‘We just picked a bunch of songs that could fit onto Vinyl. Then we decided to add a bonus track for the CD, which is a cover of P.I.L. called ‘Home’. We wanted to do a P.I.L. cover and when we read the lyrics of that song we understood that it was the right one to do cause it’s really relevant, talking about what is going on right now. Johnny Rotten has always been a hero for Snake and I in particular.”
When asked about the Jason Newsted era and how he joined the band ‘Well what happened was a year after the band split (around 2000), Piggy and I got anxious and checked out with Snake if he wanted to join the band again. So we thought let’s phone Jason (Newsted) because we had done so many records with him in the past and he immediately got excited and ended up joining the band. The funny thing is when I phoned him to ask him to be a guest bassist on the album (originally), he said how did you know I just left Metallica? But it was just a very strange coincidence. We are also looking into re-releasing the self titled Voivod album with Jason Newsted (2003). We secured the rights but I think we will save this re-release of this self-titled album for next year.”
When asked about when the Voivod documentary will be completed “It is near completion, just a little more editing here and there. I am sure it is going to be out next year (2024), same with the book. “
When asked about if Voivod started writing new music ” So on the last tour we just did, on the road we have been writing some ideas on our computesr. In October to January we might be able to write a new album hopefully”
When asked about AI and technology today in music “I will always try to use technology as much as I can use it in music and video but what I am most afraid of is AI controlling high tech weaponry, this is my main fear. “
Once more recorded and mixed by Francis Perron at RadicArt Studio, mastered by Maor Appelbaum and produced by VOIVOD, Morgöth Tales includes fresh studio (re-)recordings by the band’s current line-up of 9 especially selected, not-so-obvious picks from the band’s hyper-classy and extremely diverse back catalogue (between 1984 and 2003) as well as a brand-new song in the album’s title-track, “Morgöth Tales”.
