Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to Armored Saint’s singer John Bush on Oct 28, 2022 at the House of Blues in Las Vegas as the band was preparing for opening night as special guests to W.A.S.P.

When asked how the tour came about “We have the same agent. He (Agent) told WASP’s Blackie how about Saints (Armored Saint) opening and Blackie said he loved it. So we got on, it’s been great so far beyond our expectations as far as uh pre-attendance. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that WASP hasn’t toured in a long time. And even though Armored Saint has been busy in the last five to eight years there’s still a lot of places that we haven’t played in a long time. For instance the Albuquerque is the first show on the bill on the tour and we haven’t played there since Delirious Nomad (Album). I am bummed that we are not going to Canada, however I’ve made a list of about 20 to 30 other cities that we could literally do on a second leg if everything goes great. If the tours Smash and The Vibes are great and you know it’s like why not do a Canadian tour? “
Is there any Nostalgia associated with this Tour “I think there’s a Nostalgia Vibe for the obvious reasons because people still talk about that 85′ Tour to this day, the W.A.S.P. Metallica (Armored) Saint . With (Metallica’s) Ride the Lightning (album) first W.A.S.P. record March of the Saints (Armored Saint debut). It was a great run, it was a big buzz, so it makes sense that we would go out on the road with WASP (today). We had a lot of shows together as the bands started out so there’s definitely an LA connection. I think it’s really exciting. It’s 40 years later, it’s kind of their anniversary, it’s our anniversary um it’s a whole new generation and hopefully it just keeps going and going.”
When asked if the band is working on a new album “I don’t know yet we really didn’t do any dates with ‘Punching the sky’ . So even though to some people you may feel like that record’s old it really isn’t because we haven’t toured on it so to me it’s kind of all about that. Have we talked about a record? Well we’ve talked about it, that’s about all I’ll say at this point. Sometimes Armored Saint takes some time to make record.”
Former Quiet Riot Bassist Chuck Wright and Ultimate Jam Night founder recently spoke to The Metal Voice about his new solo album ‘Sheltering Sky’, his Quiet Riot years and time he almost reunited the original David Lee Roth band.
Excerpt from the interview Chuck Wright remembers the historic night in almost reuniting the David Lee Roth original band for the ‘Eat ‘Em and Smile’ 30 year anniversary, due to over capacity, “To be the big feather in the cap was to get the ‘Eat ‘Em and Smile’ band (David Lee Roth band original Lineup) back together. The word got out and the club wouldn’t listen to me, they kept letting people in, they would not listen to me. I said you guys, the Fire Marshal’s gonna close us down. All the guys from Eat’ Em and Smile, Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, Greg Bissonnet and the late Brett Tuggle (keyboards), were all there. David Lee Roth shows up, he’s sitting in the Green Room, they’re ready to go. They’re on stage, curtain’s about to open and the Fire Marshal says you can’t play. It was just heart-wrenching for me and that’s when things started to go south with that particular venue. I mean they took away a great thing from us by just not listening. They were thinking more about let’s get more people in or, sell more booze or whatever. There were way too many people, we pleaded. Hey listen if some of you people could just leave. “
“The word got around town. Our night that would do anywhere from 500 to 800 people suddenly had 2000+ people lined up around the building. Last I heard we had about 1000 people in the building and the fire marshal showed up. Shut down the show and said everyone had to leave. ” singer Matt Starr stated as reported on Sleaze Roxx Dec 4, 2021
The Fire Marshal on Nov 25, 2015 shut down Lucky Strike during the Ultimate Jam Night before the DLR solo reunion do to over capacity. The cancelled performance would have marked the first time in 30 years that David Lee Roth of Van Halen guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Greg Bissonette, and keyboardist Brett Tuggle, to perform some of the hits from the classic “Eat Em and Smile” album.
‘Eat Em and Smile’ record which was David Lee Roth’s debut solo album released in 1986.
Long time Bassist for multi-platinum rockers Quiet Riot, Chuck Wright has released his debut solo album, “Chuck Wright’s Sheltering Sky”.
The album features guest appearances by 40 of Wright’s musical peers including keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater/Billy Idol), guitarist Lanny Cordola (House of Lords), vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen), Troy Luccketta (Tesla) and the late Mr. Big drummer, Pat Torpey.
The album’s 11 tracks also illustrate Wright’s impressive songwriting ability as he either wrote or co-wrote all nine original songs on the album. Also included is an edgy, intense version of Bjork’s “Army of Me” along with a soulful, Celtic-rock take on The Youngbloods classic, “Darkness, Darkness.” Chuck also produced and engineered most of the album.
For The Metal Voice former Anthrax singer Neil Turbin spoke to drummer Darrell Dwarf from the Killer Dwarfs at the Whisky in L.A. on Oct 13, 2022. Darrell Dwarf spoke about the band’s new music; an incident touring when opening Iron Maiden in 1988; David Ellefson unfairly getting thrown out of Megadeth and the possibility of a ‘Stand Tall’ Re-issue.
When asked if the Killer Dwarfs are working on new music? “We have some new music in the can. We actually have recorded a few tracks and we want to try them out on the fan base. It’s been a long time since we’ve recorded an album and so we’ve actually recorded two tracks. We’re kind of indecisive right now on whether we’re going to go all the way with a full album or are we releasing tracks like a lot of bands are just releasing downloaded tracks. This new music is exciting because it’s like we didn’t have to work so hard to come up with these. We still didn’t know what kind of animal it was going to be and we were really relieved to listen to it back and say that’s the Dwarfs, that’s us man. Well we’re playing one of the songs in the shows now, we’ll play it tonight. Initially it was sort of something we were referring to as the Cheap Trick song. When we got together and played it, it sort of turned into a Dwarf song with a Cheap Trick flavor to it. It’s just a melodic tune, it’s a cool tune ‘Weight of the world’ is the (name of ) the track that we have been playing live. We didn’t intend on playing anything until we released it but we just started kicking it around at one show in Canada and it just felt so good that we continued to do it and we actually want to try it out with the fans you know to see their reaction.”
When asked if they will ever re-release the classic album ‘Stand Tall’ which is unavailable “There’s a bit of politics going on with that record. I can’t really get into too much about it because Epic Records owned the record but we’re going to get it back actually and we can get it back so that’s just something that’s a work of progress, we have people working on that. That record sold 70 000 records in the US when it first came out, it’s a popular Dwarf’s record and fans now clamor for it to buy it on eBay for 900 bucks which drives me crazy. It’s a sought-after album to get.”
When asked if they are still on David Ellefson Label “We’ve released a live album (EMP Label Group “Live No Guff!) we weren’t completely locked in on anything on that deal with them. We gave them the live album and ‘Start @ One’ ( lost studio Album) to put it out on his label (EMP) to release worldwide, you know, physical copies. We were going to record new music as well but his label went South as you know right from his unfortunate experience of not knowing how to turn a camera off on the internet. I don’t know exactly how that all went down and it’s none of my business whatever happened to Dave (Ellefson). I feel bad for him actually and I love masturbating. (Laughs). I think it was unfair that he (David Ellefson) got fired from the band (Megadeth). It was so harsh, like people, kill people and still get their gig. I was on his (Ellefson) side. I’m gonna just be honest I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to that whole thing when it went down but then all of a sudden Dave Mustaine comes out and says he’s (Ellefson) is no longer with us, like holy crap. Megadeth was a pretty tight unit with him (Ellefson) in it. They did a lot of touring together and had huge hit records. “
When asked about opening with Iron Maiden in 1988, in the U.K. “When we were younger we were full of piss and vinegar and we weren’t afraid of anybody or anything. We would go out with Priest or Dio… we toured with all these bands. We had no fear man and that’s a cool thing and we just went out and kicked ass. We were so excited to open for Maiden in the UK and Steve Harris loved us and it was so positive. So our first show was in Wales. We came out with all guns blazing and Russ (Dwarf) came out with the tricycle. The whole thing is just ballistic right. We open up the set with something fast. So we come out and within two minutes of the first song all of a sudden we’re getting spit on, like Gob, like thousands of Gobs. What is going on here? I mean these Fu** limeys are like (spitting) big gobs and they’re hitting us. It’s getting all over Mike’s guitar. What the F*** is this? So after that barrage we go into the second song then it’s coins, all of a sudden boom oh were getting pelted with (pound) coins. Whipping pound coins like rocks. Then by the third song Steve Harris walked out on stage and grabbed the F*** mic. I gained a whole new respect for that guy and that’s why I love him to this day. And he said you mother*** stop **** throwing S** at These Guys these guys. They are our guests now F*** off and stop doing it and he walked off. And it never happened again and all the rest of the tour went smoothly. And the press came out like Kerrang and they go these guys are winning over the Maiden fans and Maiden fans loved us.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice interviewed UGLY KID JOE guitarist and co-founder Klaus Eichstadt. Klaus spoke about the bands up and coming new album ‘ Rad Wings of Destiny, which will be released on October 21st via Metalville Records.
He also spoke about the quick rise of the band in the early days, working with Rob Halford in the studio and touring with bands such as Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses and Ozzy Osbourne.
When asked about the recording of the new album ‘It’s just been kind of a three year process, it started right before covid and then coved slowed everything down but we started doing stuff remotely. Then as covid ended we got back together again a couple times and finished it. “
When asked about the musical style of the new album ” It’s a hard rock record for the most part and it’s pretty diverse. There are some songs that are more Moody and some that are more like AC/DC. Anytime we do anything that sounds a little like AC/DC it’s like they’re our favorite band of all time so I guess you’d have to say it’s deliberate. Some of it’s more where we’re just kind of having fun in the studio doing a full acoustic, almost a country song. It’s a little more old school, it’s not like new metal at all, it’s more like hard rock, maybe going back to the late 70s a little bit. We even have a cover of Lola (The Kinks) which is a great song, we love that song it’s got a little bit of sarcasm in it too. The album has also got some serious stuff too, so it’s got something for everybody.”
When asked about touring with Ozzy Osbourne after the success of the bands first E.P. and working on the debut album at same time “We needed to go make a record (debut album) and so we really had a small six week window to make the record and we didn’t finish it on time. And then we started shows with Ozzy (No More Tears Tour opening). So Whit ( Whitfield Crane) and I were flying back after every show, back to LA to record. It sucked because I wanted to enjoy the tour. I wanted to tour with Ozzy and be present. I didn’t want to be worrying about the song and these lyrics. On the Ozzy tour, we called him Uncle Ozzy because I heard someone from The Motley Crew call him that because he was the dude that took out the new metal bands and all my favorite bands opened for Ozzy at some time early in their career. So to get to have that tour was an honor. Ozzy was actually totally sober, that’s what he called the tour, the ‘No More Beers Tour’ he was boxing every day before the show. But Zakk (Zakk Wylde) drank and he drank with us and we drank on our bus. But one day because there was no alcohol backstage we showed up backstage and there’s a case of Budweiser saying ‘love Ozzy’ on it and we’re like he (Ozzy) realized we’re a Young Band and this is our first big yeah Arena tour to have fun and have some beer. Ozzy was everything you expected like as a person or as an artist, he is the real deal. He would throw stink bombs in our dressing room. He was super nice and funny. Ozzy was still kind of a mythical being to us during and after the tour even though we saw him a few times, we met him and took a few pictures. Zakk became our friend and was on the bus with us hanging out but Ozzy was still kind of Ozzy yet at the same time very down to earth, very funny and very nice.”
When asked about how they got Rob Halford to sing on the song ‘Goddamn devil’ on debut album ‘America’s Least Wanted’ “It was Mark Dodson the guy who produced that album and our last record, who had done some Judas Priest records (in the past). In fact that’s literally probably the moment we’re like we want that guy (to produce) because Rob Halford is basically Whit ( Whitfield Crane) hero vocally/ So when he (Mark Dodson) mentioned that he’s friends with Rob and that he’s going to invite him down to say hi because he knew we were such huge fans. I think Mark kind of had it planned out to ask him (Halford) to sing on that song. So he played him the track and we were sitting in the studio with Rob Halford listening to the Goddamn Devil and his (Halford) remark when the song ended was, I like the lyrics. So Mark said to Rob Halford, would you like to sing on it and he’s like sure. And he just gets in the booth he just started going for it and he got it like I’d say probably what’s on the record was the second take and then he even did that thing at the end where he started just ad libbing and I think that was like again probably the second take and we’re like you’re done this is perfect. “
When asked about getting actress Julia Sweeney, Pat from Saturday Night with spoken words on Debut album and the bands videos ‘Again another weird random thing because that character just killed us, that was so funny the Pat character. This dude that we would literally just hang out with in Santa Barbara, we were hanging out at a friend’s house drinking beers watching football whatever and he’s like we were laughing. Maybe we were talking about her or that character on SNL the night before. So all of a sudden he’s like she’s really closely related. We’re like you think she’d ever do anything with us because we’re huge fans of Comedy obviously and um I think that’s how we got her name. Next we asked maybe she could do some overdub, we were doing ‘America’s Least Wanted’ so we already had kind of a hit, so we already known and we also known for a little bit of the humor thing because ‘Everything about you’.So he had asked her and she was like totally 100% yes I’d love to, where do I need to be. So we said come by Devonshire Studios at like noon on Monday or whatever and because she lived in L.A and so she’s like fine I’ll be there. So we had her come and we were just thinking about ideas but the funny thing she shows up and she brings her whole Pat wardrobe. She wasn’t quite sure. She’s very professional and she’s like she knows this character is a hit so she’s like oh they want me to do something I’m not sure what it is but I’m going to bring it just in case . So when we did the video a little later she ended up in the neighbor video and kind of had a big part in it and this time she got to use the red funny weird outfits.”
When asked when they opened for Van Halen in the UK did you hang out with Eddie Van Halen “We’re playing Wembley for three nights in Europe, Bon Jovi’s the headliner. And when you’re playing Arena there’s a lot of dressing room areas and stuff. So our dressing room is right next to Van Halen’s and every day we play the show Eddie would come into our dressing room maybe three minutes after we were done playing maybe five and just with his guitar warming up and asking us how was the show how was the crowd and this was like his routine every single show. The guy was so down to earth, just for the record he wasn’t drinking at the time he was always having a non-alcoholic Heineken. Super nice, super humble, super easy to just talk to. We would even make fun of him and he would make fun of us. One day he walked in. We were literally wearing the same outfit just by chance, just black shorts and an orange T-shirt for some reason. He walked in and I looked at him and so I said something like what are you doing ripping off my outfit or something and he’s like yeah soon I’ll be stealing all your licks and I said to him you’ll just be stealing them all back. I was like my little Eddie moment that I just loved because he kind of looked at me and smiled.”
When asked about meeting Axl Rose opening for Guns N Roses “We played with them in Israel of all places one off, big Festival. We were treated really well there. After the concert there’s this really nice fun bar we all went to and it was really fun. We were just talking with fans. I’m like wait, that’s Axel Rose just sitting on the bar talking to our bass player and just like just subdued at the bar. So I’m like oh I guess he does go out and talk to people. So I just went for it. I was like this is my chance. I sat next to him. He was totally nice. We had a shot of tequila together. He thought that we were the Bloodhound Gang for a second. He was totally nice and cool and funny and he was it was you know there was nothing about him that made me feel in any way uncomfortable. “ Ugly Kid Joe are an American rock band formed in Isla Vista, California in 1989. Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to guitarist Chris Impellitteri about Impellitteri’s new three album Anthology ‘Wake of the Beast’ via Global Rock Records.
Chris also gave an update on the band’s new up and coming studio album and discussed the band’s Christian labeling that has been going on for years.
When asked about the new three album anthology Impellitteri ‘Wake of the Beast’ on Global Rock Records “Global Rock Records is re-releasing (distributing) our back catalog so this is kind of exciting for us. It’s been a long time coming, basically we got the legal rights back to our masters and we always pledged that once we did that we would release the back catalog in all the countries that we never distributed our product before. Hence that was really how we initiated this. This is music that was never really accessible to many countries globally and so and it’s interesting because I think maybe the success we’ve had in places like Japan some places in Continental Europe have kind of spilled over into other countries and there seemed to be this interest that was generated on the band. Unfortunately a lot of kids or the people that embrace our music we’re kind of forced to pay these outrageous export or import prices. So really the whole idea behind this release is to get the music to them at a very reasonable price with the exception of the albums ‘Venom’ and ‘The Nature of the Beast’ which were still signed to we’re still signed to Frontiers for Europe and North America and JBC Victor entertainment for Japan or rather all of Asia. So we got the Masters back, at least legally and then we kind of put a plan together to figure out what are the songs that our fans over the years have kind of embraced, the songs that struck a chord or resonated with them. So ultimately we spent probably about a month or two just kind of digging into our discography trying to figure out what kind of music we want to share with the world that has never heard. So we really sat down and discussed the fan favorites we even would go on to things like YouTube and we’d read the comments. It was pretty easy once you do that, you kind of get a sense of what people like or don’t like. “
When asked if Impellitteri is a Christian Band as labeled by so many over the years “We’re not a Christian band we’ve never been. For me personally, I’m a Christian right. Rob Rock is a Christian. So I believe very much in Jesus Christ, that’s who I am personally. So if someone loves Beelzebub so be it. But the band as far as getting labeled (Christian) I’m thinking dude where’d that come from I mean it never started that way, I mean listen to Impellitteri the Black E.P.? In the late 80s when we first came out, we were so burnt out on every other band which was was like sex, drugs rock and roll. Okay great, we get it, we believe we lived a life of decadence, we were part of the Sunset Strip, we were part of that crowd. We did it right. But musically we just didn’t want to be like all the other bands at that time. It’s like okay great you slept with her last night and the next girl, whatever it’s like okay who cares you know we wanted stuff to be more intriguing. So Rob (Rock) he took a lot of the content that you hear lyrically and the music that we do and he extracted right from the Bible. And look, you go into areas like Armageddon, that kind of stuff, it’s you know more like the end of the world kind of stuff . I mean dude what gets scarier than that? To me it is cooler, it’s really cool. Believe me, lyrically he’ll (Rob Rock) do stuff from Book of Revelations big time, maybe even like from Psalms, you know Psalms. At the end of the day I love it because it makes the lyric have almost like a theatrical content, there’s in-depth meaning. Also Rob is cunning he writes in a way that you could interpret it outside of the biblical, you could apply it to everyday life. You look at some of the black metal bands and especially more of the Satanic bands and I’m always laughing, you want to go up against us? Remember we’re gonna win, good always wins over evil dude.”
When asked about an update on the new Impellitteri album they are working on “We’re in the middle of our new record, we owe Frontiers and JVC Victor another record and we started recording probably halfway through the pandemic. I should say, we started writing and recording and we probably have about another three or four months to go. So the plan is we’re going to probably release the new record I would assume probably middle of 2023 or maybe towards Summer. We got three or four songs that are finished recording but we still have about another 12 songs to go and it’s written, the music’s written now but now it’s actually performing it and we’re always the type band that we don’t we don’t try to do this where hey let’s just all send files, we really try to go in the rehearsal studios rehearse so we can we can play this stuff live and then we go into the studio. A lot of times we try to track as much as possible live and then we’ll go in we’ll add the layers and all the big you know overdubs and orchestration whatever we feel is missing right to capture that power, So that’s kind of our process. After the new album is done we’re gonna go play everywhere that will have us so that’s going to be unique for us. We’ve always done Japan, we’ve done some of the major festivals in Europe a couple years ago. We did some secret kind of live rehearsal shows. We did it in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York City, we had a blast it was so much fun. “
When asked about musical direction on the new album “I think our records mature over the years because look to this day at my age and doing this so long. I still love playing guitar. I play like six to eight ten hours a day sometimes because I love it. So every day I play I explore the instrument I realize oh my God this is really cool and I learned something new theoretically. And I’m able to somehow mature as a musician by implementing whatever I learn each day so every time we do a record it always sounds like Impellitteri and I always will because it’s Rob’s voice it’s my guitar playing Etc. I think the music and the composing part of it always matures and we get a little better right each time at least I hope we do. So on this one we’re definitely bringing in more orchestration. It’s still going to have a lot of the fast double bass stuff, there’s a lot of really cool technical stuff, a lot of the screaming vocals, big three-part harmonies because again Queen. We love that stuff, at least the heavier part of Queen. As we get older we always tend to push ourselves to get a little bit more aggressive and a little faster. I listen to so much music, a lot of bands, even guys that are friends that I know in bands. I mean I love bands like Arch Enemy and so I let that stuff kind of spill over and influence me a little bit. I like Avenged Sevenfold. I love Slipknot, so I love a lot of the new bands but then also I’ll go back and listen to an old Deep Purple album like Machine Head , which I love. Then of course I listen to a lot of Vivaldi like the Four Seasons, the violin concerto’s all that fun stuff and so all of this is like it’s affecting me. I’m a sponge. So all of the stuff I’ve been listening to and I’m sure somehow it’s going to spill out into this new record although it still sounds like Impellitteri. “
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to Testament‘s Singer Chuck Billy in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Sept 30, 2022.
Watch the interview below.
When asked about the upcoming Metallica Tribute show in Florida and the legacy of Jon And Marsha Zazula “I’m gonna be at that show as well, I’m gonna go down there. I own my life to (Jonny) because he signed the band and gave us a chance to be recognized as a band first of all. And even after the first two records on Megaforce records we and a handful of bands went to Atlantic Records but still we kept in contact a long time over the years. I’d say maybe it was eight years ago we started a management company together. So I got to speak to Jonny and Marsha all the time, every day and me and my wife spent a lot of vacation time with them either in the Bahamas or Mexico or they would come stay at our house. So we really had a close Bond. The thing about Jonny was, even up to the last few days of his life he’s was always been a guy thinking of something. You should try this, or hey this is an idea, till the end, if he thought of something he made it happen you know. And of course we got to reap that benefit of being on Megaforce (Records) with Jonny a true legend. And Marsha she was actually the one behind Jonny. He would have the idea and she would say, Jonny you’re crazy or yeah let’s do it. Marsha was really the boss. I love them both, I miss them both because the connection we had and talking to him every day, I missed that you know and so he’ll be missed. So Metallica is doing a great thing in Florida with Raven. I’ll be there. I’ll be supporting them. I’m there in spirit for Johnny and Marsha.”
When asked about Dave Lambardo recently joining the band and if he had to re-audition to join “Of course not , no audition needed, no. It’s been really great Dave’s been kicking ass, the fans love him being back playing Testament songs.”
When asked about the possibility of playing a Slayer tune during this tour. “We talked about it, especially since Gary Holt from Exodus played with Slayer. I mean we talked about doing that but it just hasn’t happened yet.”
When asked about the status of his long awaited Solo Album ” I’ve got a lot of tracks from different guitar players that have sent me tracks but you know there’s so much to be done in Testament. I’m still promoting this record (Titan’s of Creation) it’s not time, that’s just something I want to do eventually and hopefully fit it in after. Right after this tour we have time off until April and so we’re gonna go right away and start working on the New Testament record. “
When asked if there are any new musical directions outside the box the band wants to tackle on the next Studio album “I think Titans of Creation to me was outside of the box because of the way we’ve always worked. At the end of the day (Titans of Creation) just came out great. All the songs are so different but still Testament and that was the beauty of just me trying to figure it out and be out of my comfort zone and I think that made for a better record. “
Any other update on a new Testament Studio album? “October 15th is the last show of this tour, so we’ll work right up to Christmas and then right after New Year’s we’ll get right back at it. I know Eric (Peterson) and Alex (Skolnick) have been working and jamming together and I hear there’s an epic song that’s been created. I haven’t heard it yet but I hear it’s epic, that’s all they say. It’s epic. That’s the word they throw at me so we’ll see. I think Testament will always stay in the vein of Testament and not not follow Trends or follow what’s hip today. We want to kind of stay Testament because I hear it from fans when you talk to them. They always say, thank you for being who you are for so long, so we just have to continue that.”
