Canada’sThe Metal Voicerecently spoke to Saxon’s frontman Biff Byford about the bands upcoming Covers album ‘Inspirations’ which will be released on March 19 2021 via Silver Lining music.
Tell us about the song selections for ‘Inspirations’ “I asked the band to pick two songs, so we made a list of songs. Some of them were really weird so we didn’t bother. I picked about five of the songs but remember we had more songs on the list than recorded. I waited until we were actually playing them live to see what they sounded like, some songs didn’t transpose. I wanted a song from (Black) Sabbath (Deep) Purple and (Led ) Zeppelin. We really didn’t want to do the easy ones on Zeppelin or Purple. The Black Sabbath one (Evil Woman) is an odd choice but I didn’t really know what to do with Sabbath, so I went with the Crow’s song (done by Black Sabbath) Evil Woman. I was born in the 50’s so the 60’s was a big time to be growing up with music. There were a lot of other bands that we could have done but I wanted the big three in there (The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix). The thing with The Beatles when they played on TV for the very first time in 1963 I was like 12-13 years old , so seeing a band on TV in my living room was a big first for me so it influenced me a lot musically. Then obviously The Stones came later. I thought The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and in particular Hendrix influenced us definitely. Everyone one of the cover songs on the album has a connection to the band.”
Did you want the cover songs on Inspirations to sound like Saxon or keep them closer to the original recordings? “We sort of changed the songs a bit but it would be a sort of travesty to mess with them a bit too much. I wanted to keep them fairly simple to the original but with a heavier sound, a heavier angle. Obviously my voice is completely different to their voices. I think my voice definitely gives it a different angle anyway. Keep it straightforward but with a powerful performance. For example the song ‘Speed King’ we played it faster than Deep Purple, just because we can.”
How long did it take to record the album and was the album put out to bridge the gap for the new studio album “We recorded the whole album in about 17 days, it’s a very live album. I don’t think there were any overdubs on it, it’s very live. It was done in a big house in a big room like the old n days and it was just good fun. We thought the (new Saxon) album has been pushed back no one has any idea what is happening with the vaccination things or when we will be getting back to the stage. If people like it we will probably do another one next year, it’s good fun to do because there is no pressure and the songs are already written (laughs).”
Have you finished the New Saxon Studio album? “Most of the guitars , bass and drums are done, the vocals are sort of done. I have to do all the vocals at once, so the vocals I already did we will trash them and start again. I think probably after Christmas I will do the vocals on it again. I’m also doing an album with my son Sebastian, we have written some songs together and we will be doing that pretty quickly. Our videos on Youtube are pretty popular. The album with my son will be full on rock with a band. In regards to the new Saxon Studio album they are talking 2021 as the release date but I don’t know yet the whole entertainment industry is kind of gone and forgotten as far as the government is concerned. We are all waiting to see. If the vaccine starts to work people are able to mix together then the album will come out . We don’t like putting albums out and not tour because we like to tour on the album.”
Would Saxon consider doing a Live Stream event “People keep asking us to do it, whether we will or not we do it I don’t know. The thing is I like audiences, I like to be live if you know what I mean. We might do it , we could do it on a smaller scale like me and my son but I don’t think a full production running around on stage in front of cameras with nobody in the room really doesn’t appeal to me. But never say never.”
Are you getting the vaccination? “I think I might be getting mine in January 2021 because obviously with my heart thing and I am at high risk. I think they already have done a quarter of a million people in the UK.”
Thoughts on the recent passing of Eddie Van Halen “Terrible news. I saw Van Halen a few times. First time I saw them was at the Rainbow must have been 1978-79 I think they just toured with Sabbath and then they did a warm up show at the Rainbow in London, I saw that. Then I saw them again on the Tora Tora tour in Manchester. I loved the band, they were a good time rock metal band. You could not go see Van Halen and not like them actually. We did consider doing a Van Halen song I wanted to do Running with the Devil but you got to be careful. We do have an option to do another album so that might actually be a good idea. we could do a massively heavy version of ‘Running with the Devil’, make it more of a Sabbath version.”

Canada’s The Metal Voicerecently interviewed (Ashes or Ares Ex Iced Earth) singer Matt Barlow. Barlow spoke about The new Schaffer /Barlow project ‘Winter nights’ an album of reworked Christmas songs and re-imaged Iced Earth classic. He also spoke about Ashes of Ares new upcoming E.P. “Throne Of Iniquity” which will be released December 18 via ROAR! Rock Of Angels.
When asked about the The SCHAFFER/BARLOW PROJECT ‘Winter nights’ “This is something Jon and I have been kicking around doing for a long time and it worked out for us to pursue. Iced Earth and Demons and Wizard are on hiatus for Jon due to Covid, so the timing was good for this project. obviously there are a lot of aspects of 2020 that have been horrible but hopefully this is a tiny shining star in the darkness and hopefully that is the way people take it. We were looking to do something inspiring. We reworked a couple of Iced Earth tunes. “
When asked about working with Jon Shaffer again? “We always worked well together, we had a lot of laughs, we were just sitting in the studio, knocking tracks out and laughing in between, just like old times. It was pretty relaxed pretty chill it was a good time. The idea of it is to introduce the Schaffer/ Barlow project to people and doing it in this way we can sort of knock out a couple off of our bucket list so to speak. A, Jon and I working together, B the Christmas songs we talked about doing before and then C the re-working of classic Iced Earth stuff but also the next step will be doing some original stuff together. That is what our goal and is we what we want to build on and add on to it.”
When asked about the new Ashes of Ares E.P. “It’s available on limited (300 copies) vinyl only, one of the tracks will be on the next full length record. it’s sort of a single E.P. As for the others songs on the E.P. I was listening to the radio at the time and I heard Chicago’s 25 Or 6 To 4 and I thought this is such an iconic bass line and I floated the idea to Freddie to include this cover and he was totally on board with it for the E.P. Now the song Throne of Iniquity you will kind of get the idea of the song when you look at the artwork, you will see a character in the artwork but I don’t want to give it away. Then the guys at the record label Rock Of Angels really wanted us to do ‘Dust in the wind’ (Kansas), which I really love. There have been other cover versions that we heard so we wanted to make it was our own but we also pay homage to the original, we left some of the beauty in there but we also punched it up a couple of notches. “
When asked if the songs are completed for the next Ashes of Ares’ record “We are somewhere in between the demo and done, we have studio time coming up at the end of December and beginning of January 2021. We should have the record completed by the end of January and then handed off to the record company and they will decided when to release. The record release is not going to matter for us one way or another we will still promote it the best we can. I’m kind of hoping in a way for us that concept of Live Streaming concerts still stays popular that maybe a window for us to do more because of our limited ability to tour we will see how it goes.
” Ashes of Ares “Throne Of Iniquity” track listing: Side A: 1. Throne of Iniquity Side B: 1. 25 Or 6 To 4 (CHICAGO cover) 2. Dust In The Wind (KANSAS cover)

Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to Accept’s co-founder and guitarist Wolf Hoffmann about the bands upcoming studio album ‘Too Mean to Die’ which will be released January 15 2021 via Nuclear Blast Records.
During the chat Hoffmann also gave his thoughts on the departure of Peter Baltes, the influence of Eddie Van Halen and revisited the legacy of Accept’s classic albums Restless and Wild and Balls to the Wall
When asked about the making and style of new Accept studio album ‘Too Mean to die’ “Brand new songs in the traditional form of Accept and better than ever. It’s got a whole bunch of stuff on it which surprised a lot of the people. I have heard comments from people that say it reminds them a little bit of the Blood of the Nations album as far as the vibe is concerned. Another comment I got was there is a lot of surprising variety on this album. When we started recording and writing the songs we never had a goal or a plan of what we are trying to achieve that we must do this or do that, we just basically followed where the songs took us and that kind of shaped the album in the end. “
What were the pros and cons of releasing an album during a pandemic “Ask me again in three months and I will tell you of how good of an idea it was (laughs). We don”t know when everything is going to go back to normal, if ever, so how long do you postpone everything? Is it really such a good idea to let the album just sit there in the archives until day X which may or not be anytime soon or is it better to give the fans now so they can at least enjoy the music and when the day comes we will see each other on tour again. In a weird way this might actually help album sales because people don’t have to buy concert tickets because they can’t, maybe more people will buy the album ? “
When asked about the absence of long time bassist Peter Baltes “It was a little strange for me I was kind of heartbroken and sad when it happened but at the end of the day what are you going to do, you have to keep on moving, the show must go on. We got a great new guy on bass his name is Mark Motnik and he actually contributed quite a bit to this album, songwriting wise which really surprised me in a good way. I miss Peter but it has been two years and the ship rolls on what can you do.
When asked if Eddie Van Halen influenced by his guitar playing “At the end of the day he influenced everybody, anyone who heard him was blown away. He opened up a whole new chapter for every guitar player but I personally was never really influenced by him I was more drawn to Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth and other players with a little more of the classical European style of playing.”
ACCEPT’s lineup has also been expanded with the addition of a third guitarist, Philip Shouse, who originally filled in for Uwe Lulis during last year’s “Symphonic Terror” tour, before being asked to join the band permanently.
“Too Mean To Die” was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with British producer Andy Sneap (JUDAS PRIEST, MEGADETH), who has been responsible for the magnificent studio sound of ACCEPT since 2010.
