Jimmy Kay from The Metal Voiceand Artillery Singer Michael Bastholm Dahl pay tribute to Artillery’s guitarist Morten Stützer who passed away from a brain clot on Wed October 2 2019 and was kept quiet until today.
Watch below.
When asked about his Morten Stützer passing
“Morton’s health had been declining for quite a few years, that’s why he hadn’t been touring with us, he did the odd gig once in a while but physically he did not feel like playing. Morton had a heart defibrillator installed, was in danger of having blood clots and was taking blood thinner medicine. Last Tuesday all of a sudden he could not see on one of his eyes and that was something he was struggling with before which one of the reason he was uncomfortable playing live. He was rushed to the hospital but it seemed like too much time had passed and it went pretty quick from there on. ”
When asked if the band will carry on without Morton
“We have a festival date this Friday and we will play that show to honour Morton, we will preserve his legacy. No matter how hard it will be we will continue to play to honour Morton and feel and reflect how we feel to the fans about him. Artillery will soldier go on. ”
When asked about Morton as a person
“When I first joined the band I was always sharing a room with Morton because Morton was a book worm. Morton was a very quiet guy, very well read and had a lot of knowledge stuff that’s what I really liked about him. Morton was the quiet one but he also used to say his opinion on things as well and stick to it. He was very sure of what he felt. He was very kind. I might be complaining about something like losing my sunglasses and the next day he would have bought something for me to make me feel better, very thoughtful ”
Morton played Bass on the bands debut album Fear of Tomorrow and over the years switched to guitars. Their latest album The Face of Fear was released 2018.
Artillery is a Danish thrash metal band. They participated in the early development of the genre, and their highly energetic, riff-centric and often fast-paced music is similar in style to that of Voivod, Coroner, Megadeth and Sabbat from the same era. After releasing three full-length albums and touring extensively throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Artillery disbanded in 1991, but reunited seven years later, only to disband once again in 2000. However, they reformed again in 2007 and are still together today.
Jimmy Kay from The Metal Voice talkswith director film maker Ron Sobol about his Randy Rhoads documentaryThe Quiet Riot Years now on DVD, which was released in 2012 but revisited.
Watch below.
”Randy Rhoads: The Quiet Riot Years” was directed by rock photographer Ron Sobol and features interviews with Rhoads‘ QUIET RIOT bandmates Rudy Sarzo and Drew Forsyth, late QUIET RIOT singer Kevin Dubrow‘s mother and others. It explores the friendship between Rhoads and Dubrow, the band’s struggle to get an American recording deal and Rhoads‘ decision to audition for Osbourne.
RANDY RHOADS: The QUIET RIOT Years is the captivating story of Quiet Riot’s near-impossible journey to superstardom, a story that first began on March 3, 1975 with legendary guitar icon Randy Rhoads in tow. Rocked by adversity at every turn, refusing to give up, resolute that it was their way or the highway, Quiet Riot truly epitomize the word survivor, by eventually becoming one of the most popular bands in heavy metal history.
Rhoads died in a 1982 plane crash at age 25 while on tour with Osbourne.
Photographer Ron Sobol is one of the rare few who captured that elusive lightning in a bottle magic. As a perennial fifth member of hard rock band QUIET RIOT since their inception, Sobol‘s involvement lasted beyond the success of their multi-platinum masterpiece, “Metal Health”. Intuitively aware of capturing the band’s striking visual appeal, on and off stage, Ron quickly became a part of the group’s trusted inner circle. Ron was not only QUIET RIOT‘s personal photographer, lighting director, and co-writer, he was also their dearest friend.
Narrated by Sobol, the accompanying 90-minute film offers a gripping behind-the-scenes portrait of two close friends, Rhoads and DuBrow, as they embark on an uphill quest for stardom . Using previously unseen images, rare video footage and period music, along with new and classic interviews, the movie chronicles the five year period (1975-1980) that Sobol was in the trenches with the band. This in-depth examination documents in photos and on celluloid, the gradual rise of a Hollywood club band into international superstars.
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voicerecently spoke to former Judas Priest, Iced Earth singer Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens. Owens spoke about the November 3 2019 K.K. Downing Steel Mill show in Wolverhampton U.K. along with former Judas Priest drummer Les Binks and Megadeth Bassist David Ellefson. He also spoke about his upcoming new solo album package and the new Three Tremors (Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens, Sean ‘The Hell Destroyer’ Peck, Harry ‘The Tyrant’ Conklin) ‘THE SOLO VERSIONS’ Release + US TOUR Nov. 15 2019 through Steel Cartel Records.
Watch the interview below.
When asked about the upcoming show with former Judas Priest member K.K. Downing and how that all got put together
“I had gotten a call from some mutual friends of all of us of K.K. and Dave Ellefson. He was like listen I think it’s a good idea to do a show David’s coming to the UK doing his book thing, he’s doing a tour and I’m trying to see if maybe K.K. wanted to join in because it’s his hometown and are you interested? I’m like yeah, I mean I really I had to squeeze it in though as I am booked with shows that month. Right After that gig I got to fly right home because I got a drive to Quebec City, Canada and start doing a short Canadian tour there with Glen and Shawn Drover. So when they ask me I was like absolutely, I definitely want to do it and it’ll be a fun time and I am looking forward to it . The plan is to make it a great set of music, it’s going to be a great night, you also got Blaze Bayley opening up the show.”
When asked of he would consider a tour with K.K. Downing, David Ellefson and Les Binks in the future
“Right now this is it, this is what we’re doing, we’re doing this one off. This is just a one-off special show. Right now that’s the only plan. I would love to do it. It would be great to do a tour but it’s just a matter of working it out with everybody schedules. As an example I’m booked up with an upcoming Three Tremors tour and my solo touring, I’m booked up pretty solid that’s not even throwing in a hologram tour if we end up doing another one.”
When asked about the new Three Tremors SOLO album re-release
“I recorded my version, I recorded all of of the songs complete. I didn’t attack the songs in parts, we sang the whole record which made it harder to mix because then they had to go how we gonna mix this thing we have to figure out who’s singing what and where. Sean Peck heard my version and goes his version is actually different than my version. I did that on purpose because when he sent me the template to sing the songs I sang it layered because I wanted to be different. For these solo albums we didn’t go back and rethink things or redo things. I think the solo versions are a brilliant idea. The solo albums are gonna be released as a three-disc set that won’t be much more of a cost to buy than a regular disc, so that’s pretty cool.”
When asked about the musical direction of the next Three tremors album
“Sean Peck is already working on the next Three Tremors record. I think the next record we’re gonna probably tame it down, at least that was my request. The first Three Tremors album was perfect it needed to come out and hit people in the face with power metal. We’re not getting three singers together to make that a mellow record or commercial record it’s gonna slam you in the face. The next one will as well but I think we’ll probably bring it back a little bit on all us just attacking it all three of us all the time. Sean is gonna start sending parts to us so we can add our two cents. In terms of a timeline Sean is thinking I’m going to get this album out.
Here’s the issue we got a ton of touring coming up, so I think Sean’s trying to get a lot of it written music-wise and any ideas now. ”
When asked about Ripper’s upcoming solo album
“I’m actually working on my own solo record now. I just kind of started. I’ve had Beyond Fear tunes and stuff lying around that we had written back in the day and I might use one or two songs from Beyond Fear. I want this album to be a little different. I really like how the ‘ A New Revenge’ record (Enemies & Lovers) came out. Maybe make my solo album in that vein but a little bit more heavier. Maybe use a little more of a different angle on my vocals, add some of my low real heavy stuff and a few more highs. Not aiming to have many guests on the album I don’t know who I am going to have play yet but I would love to get Simon Wright (ex AC.DC) on the drums. For writing my solo album I called guitarist Keri Kelli who we wrote together on the ‘A New Revenge’ album and told him, I know we’re both swamped but I’d like to start working on a new solo record. I mean could make it heavier because that’s the way my voice is or I could do it Beyond Fear heavier record but I want to save that if I do a Beyond Fear record. I also called John Capri from Beyond Fear and I said John I want you to write on my solo album too so we have that old-school hardcore influence. I just like all those influences into it to making a heavy metal hard rock record. I had one song title that I’d like I said that we had written for the second Beyond Fear record that I wrote with John Capri, called Judgment Day, (we were going to name the album Judgment Day) it was one song that I thought fit really well with my Sabbath like kind style. So I think it would fit really well with my solo record, I might even make that the title of the album ‘Judgment Day’, so you got an exclusive with that one. For my Solo record I’m actually gonna look for a label, I know it’s a hard thing to do in this day and age but I’m so busy that I am probably going to look for a label shop my solo record and put it out. ”
When asked about his mini Canadian tour called ‘A Night of Metal’ with Glen and Shawn Drover
“It’s a perfect name for us because we’re just jamming metal songs, we’re having fun, probably have a beer and get on stage. We always seem to do it through Canada and it’s usually just the three shows but this this time for some reason the last minute we added more dates like Windsor and Ottawa.”

Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to GRET WHITE‘s guitarist Mark Kendall. Kendall spoke about Great White’s new singer Mitch Malloy and how he got in the band, writing new material for upcoming Great White studio album and recalls similarities between MÖTLEY CRÜE‘s ‘Live Wire’ and Great White song ‘Out of the Night’. Plus Touring with Judas Priest and the Scorpions.
Watch the here:
When asked about why Terry Ilous and was replaced by Mitch Malloy
“Terry is a great guy great, we we were just growing in kind of different directions away. He did a lot of other projects. We didn’t like put ads out for singers it just happened, not by design. When we were in the studio doing our album producer Michael Wagner who was working on big gang vocal shouts for one of our songs invited a big big gang of people from bands that live in Nashville. One of them was Mitch Malloy. I didn’t meet him except you know perhaps saying hi or something but I had no idea who he was. Then later on the Monsters of Rock Mitch was invited on stage, I think by Terry actually. Then when I was home looking at the internet news feeds I saw this this story about Mitch being in Van Halen for a brief time. I knew pretty much knew everything there was to know and Van Halen but Mitch Malloy I knew nothing about, I never heard a word about it except for that video documentary about his time in Van Halen where he sort of explains everything. I watched it and I think he sang Panama or something and I go wow this guy is great and clicked in my head and I go I met this dude you know and his voice sounded pretty good. So I I called my keyboard player Michael Lardie and I go you know anything about this Mitch Malloy cause I listened to his solo stuff I go man this guy has a range from A to Z you know he sounds pretty good Then I heard that our agent was pitching to get Mitch. So we we decided why don’t we send Mitch some music take the vocals off and just see what he sounds like see if his voice you know kind of melts into our music or is it gonna be oil and water and in the end he fit in great.”
When asked how Mitch Malloy brings to the table on the new Great White material
“Well I I couldn’t wait to find out that so I went in the studio and I had a song that I felt it was arranged pretty good. What have I usually done with singers in the past was I usually give them a melody ideas maybe I might even have a lyrical chorus idea with the melodies and then they come back with their version of my interpretation. With Mitch he doesn’t live up the street so I just sent him what I had and he came back with a full song lyrics and everything within like four days. His song sense was that good but then when I started thinking about I go wait a minute this guy’s had like a ten album solo album career so he’s very familiar with songwriting and so that was really a great moment for me because it kind of takes the workload off. Everybody we’ve ever worked with has their strengths and their weaknesses so we always did what worked. Jack had the most the sweetest voice I’ve ever heard of my life but if you just gave him music he would always ask me how does it go so I give him the melody and then he would make it better and that’s the way we worked. Terry was more of a songwriter like Mitch you know like I would show him an idea and then he would come back with something that was way different that I liked better so that was cool and Mitch I’m just handing a song at least this first time around and he comes back with a fall song lyrics and everything and melody and I loved it all so the fact that I loved it all is it’s pretty kind of blowing my mind. I get a little bit critical with songs in fact I’ve even gotten fights in the studio in the past I mean our band entire history if there ever was an argument it was over trying to make the song better and you know we were all headstrong over that and it was I would actually get in a physical confrontation over a song.”
When asked about when to expect a new Great White Album
“Now we’re at the idea stages of a new album, so we’re just kind of showing each other ideas and stuff at sound check. I fly up every once a while to Michael Lardie’s house and record, so when we’re ready to actually do the record lot of pre-production is done and then that’s what we glue everything together. We want to try to get it out a new studio album by early next year 2020, the shows are really getting in the way but we’re thinking we’re gonna have some time set aside to make it happen. ”
When asked about the musical direction on any new material
“We really don’t have one and we never have it’s it’s funny how it’s simple we’ve always kept it. We write maybe 20- 25 songs and we pick the best ones. I mean I know that sounds ridiculous but we’ve never pre-planned like let’s do a more of a hard rock album or let’s do this or that we just kind of get in a room show each other ideas and if somebody likes a riff or some ideas somebody has to go let’s work on that.”
When asked if they will do a Live album with Mitch
“We have a live album, a live recording video from Kentucky that we might just throw it in along with the new album just for the fans.”
When asked what hurdle would he and Jack Russell have to over come to reunite into one band
“I think that you would have to go see Jack and then come back and ask me again okay. I’ll just put it this way I I’m really proud of the career we got together and it was awesome run I don’t think we got in any arguments maybe one or two over probably maybe something stupid, we were brothers. I don’t want to speak about anything negative toward him, I’m glad he’s able to least perform and that’s fine. We just want to move on, we just want to enjoy ourselves and let him enjoy himself and you know we gave him a way to make a living to call himself Jack Russell’s Great White. I don’t want to get negative and put any stain on our career together because it was a blessing.”
When asked about opening for the Scorpions and Judas Priest in the 1980’s
“A lot bands took us under the wing like the Scorpions and Judas Priest and we just kind of leaned from them because you know we’re kind of scared kids. We never played in an arena before and Judas Priest and the Scorpions wanted the whole night to be awesome, they wanted the whole night to be great so the crowd didn’t feel short-changed. In other words they didn’t want us to suck. I even remember Rudolf Schenker coming up to me one night when I had a bad night and I didn’t think anybody noticed it. Right when I walked up stage Rudolph was standing there and he said, that’s no good man you gotta play hard I just got busted by the by the guitar player from Scorpions. So that made me want to play really well every show and I really tried my best every since that confrontation.”
When asked about the similarities of the Great White song “Out of the Night” and “Live Wire” by Motely Crue and who stole the song riff from whom?
“When we were in a band called Dante Fox which ended up turning into Great White every time we played the Whiskey Motley Crue would come down and watch us play and we played that song back then and then they had a song similar which it could be coincidental but you know they would come down to our shows. Who had it first I really don’t know? When that came out I I thought it sounded kind of similar but they had a way different chorus and they kind of started and stopped a lot. We were playing that song in like 79 -80 but no worries.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voicerecently spoke to lead singer Mark Osegueda of Bay City Thrash band Death Angel. Osegueda spoke about the writing process of the songs on the bands latest release Humanicide , the famous band bus crash that broke up the band and if there was any possibility of a The Bay Strikes back tour. The bands ninth album Humanicide was released May 31st 2019 on Nuclear Blast.

When asked if they did anything different this time around on the new album compared to last album
“This time we let Ted Aguilar write a song on the new record [Laughter, in a joking manner] called Alive and Screaming and actually I’m very fond of the songs. Ted had the riffs and Rob kind of pieced it together and I came up with the melody. Over the years we’ve kind of come up with a good formula that’s working really well. Usually Rob comes up with a basic structure of a song and presents it to the guys, then we will make a demo of it and then I’ll usually hash it out and melodies and lyrics from there. On this new album we were kind of riding on the high of our last album The Evil Divide and just kind of really wanted to stick with a lot of melody but still a lot of aggression. We took both the melody to a new high and pushed the aggression to definitely definitely a new high. We have a formula that works and we’re sticking to it and I’m not saying we’re making the same album every time it’s just with the same kind of passion.”
When asked about how such a legacy band can have so much aggression after so many years
“I’m hard wired hot. We’ve been doing this a long time, we’ve put in our hours, months, years and definitely put in our miles. We see some Heights that other bands have reached and at the same time we’re still in a sense struggling to make ends meet so that alone is you’re inspiring enough to have to angry behind what we’re doing.”
When asked about the meaning behind the song ‘Humanicide’ off the new album
“It looks like at the unfortunate direction that humanity is heading towards and somethings got to change or it’s going to be inevitable our future. If they keep getting dehumanizing us , this divide and conquer kind of technique without people realizing that it’s happening it’s gonna get tragic really fast.”
When asked about the meaning behind the song ‘Divine Defector ‘off the new album
“When I first got presented the demo I almost didn’t know what to make of it because it was very intense with blastbeats. I just wanted to write something that met the intensity of the song. I think I achieved that with the vocal performance on it and lyrically it’s just it’s coming from a very aggressive place. It’s about being pretty much back into a corner and just just being relentless in your attack back.”
When asked about writing the song ‘Aggressor ‘
“Rob actually the music the lyrics and melody. Rob writes songs with my voice in mind and when we’re recording he always tries to push a bit more aggressiveness out of it.”
When asked about the song ‘Revelation Song’ off the new album
“Revelation song, it’s that’s one of the more melodic Tunes on the record for sure. I’m very fond of that song it’s definitely one when I get to hit my more melodic side and do a lot more clean singing. When the song hits the chorus the main riff almost has like a powerful seventies rock kind of thing.”
When asked about the song ‘The day I walked away’
“I absolutely love that song and there was a time when there was discussion if it was gonna make the album or be a bonus track or whatnot and I kind of definitely championed for that making it at least as a bonus track. The feedback on that song has been overwhelmingly positive”
When asked about the famous bus crash that led to the band breaking up after the making of Act 111
“It happened after playing a show in I believe in Arizona, Phoenix or Tucson and heading to Las Vegas for the next show. In the wee hours somewhere in the desert the driver of the vehicle fell asleep and when he came to he over corrected and the accident happened. It was a very unfortunate because Andy our drummer did get very hurt and it did sideline the band and the record company of course wanted us to carry on and keep touring because the album was fresh and the record had a lot a big buzz behind it. But there was no way we were just going to tour with Andy in the hospital like that. At that point we were going through a lot of stuff internally with legal problems and so that tour although there were a lot of highlights there was also a lot of bad behind the scenes things. A lot of meetings. We had a lot of legal problems ,so it was kind of eating away at the core of the band which a lot of people couldn’t see from the outside. But for us it was definitely eating away at us. I think after that accident I kind of took it as a sign that I’ve had enough with with everything that was happening to us legally business-wise. How many times we’ve been screwed over and it looked like more and more was on the way and I just took a look inside and said you know it’s been a good run for me I’m done. We did have five contracted shows in Japan that we already signed contracts for and we couldn’t afford to not do. So we did them without Andy. ”
When asked about when they will start working on new material
“Rob said what’s going to start happening is he’s gonna start compiling more things on the road and presenting to me so we can get you know things knocked out faster or even more songs to choose from for the next record. I’m hoping it does happen because it’s just less rushing at the end [Laughter] I don’t write a song lyric until the songs in front of me and then I come up with a melody and then I start reading the lyrics cuz I mean I my mind melodies and lyrics are inspired by the feel of this song . I do have a lyric book I do write down certain phrases as i come across them for future references for lyrics. ”
When asked if The Bay Strikes back tour will come to North America (featuring Death Angel, Exodus and Testament)
“I’ve seen some rumors floating around everywhere of course, we’ve not been approached so I could not tell you that you know I’ve heard anything. We’ve not been approached as a band as far as the Bay strikes back to Tour but I do know there is interest for North America, South America, Asia, Australia. So we’re gonna see how it does in Europe and you know there’s talk of you know taking it worldwide, if the buzz keeps coming and you the bands are available.”
Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to singer /guitarist Michael Sweet of STRYPER who will be releasing his upcoming solo album called ’10’ on October 11 via Rat Pak Records in North America and Frontiers Music Srl in Europe.
Watch the interview here:
Sweet spoke in depth about his new upcoming solo album, his duet with Todd Latorre on the solo album, gave hints towards the musical direction for the next Stryper album and release and gave a quick health statement on Stryper guitarist Oz Fox who is currently fighting brain tumours.
When asked about the sound he wanted to achieve on his upcoming solo album ’10’
“With this album I wanted to take it a step further than my last solo album One Sided War. When I was writing the new album I decided I wanted guest guitarists to join me on the album to do the solos cause, I wanted it to sound a little less Stryper in that sense. But there’s that other side of the coin and humbly I say this I don’t say it with an ego or anything at all. I play guitar in Stryper and I write most of the songs and I discovered that Stryper guitar tone back in 1979. So I can’t escape that Stryper sound nor would I so that Stryper sound can be also heard on the album. Fans want to hear some of those flavors from the past the glory days and if you don’t give them to them and you give them something totally different you’re alienating yourself from your fan base and in my opinion that’s not very smart. So I try to mix it up, retain some of the past and mix it with the present. I’m always trying to outdo myself I want each album to get better and I feel I really believe that the best is yet to come.”
When asked about the duet on the new album with Queensryche Todd Latorre (proclaimed Atheist) called Son of Man
“I’ll tell you the story behind that duet/ collaboration and I don’t think Todd would mind at all he and I are really good friends. Todd is a proclaimed atheist but when I look at Todd and I think he’s more Christian than most Christians. The reason why I say that is because he’s a nice person he’s just a good guy. There are proclaimed Christian that go on rants and do all kinds of B.S. that completely destroy the Christianity side of things, that maybe that doesn’t represent Christ. But you know Todd Latorre is a great representation of God’s love because he’s just a great loving guy. Now when I when I asked him to sing the song and I sent the lyrics to him he was totally cool with it. And the reason why he said he was cool with it is because he respects everybody and he knows that I respect everybody. I’m not here to judge anybody and he’s not here to judge anybody so that’s why he was able to sing those lyrics with the smile and with conviction because he gets it.”
When asked about plans and musical direction for a new Stryper album
“Next year Stryper is going to make a new album. We go into the studio in January/ February 2020 and the album will come out mid next year 2020. I’ve got a few riffs I’m gonna really dive into over the next three to four weeks, getting a bunch of guitar riffs on my phone and once I have you know 9, 10, 11, 12, guitar riffs in November/December I will lock myself away in a room and I’ll just start going through songs. On the upcoming Stryper album we’re gonna do some things where people are gonna hear it and say, you gotta be kidding me? Were going to surprise and shock people in a really good way. It’s gonna be a metal album, it’s not gonna be a pop album or pop rock or glam metal. We’re gonna really pull some things out of the hat man try to blow people’s minds.”
When asked a health update on guitarist Oz Fox’s who is fighting a brain tumour
“Oz just went to South America with us (Stryper) to play. We’re hoping and praying for the best and that things turn around that he continues to get healthier and and stronger. Most important he can live a long healthy life, that’s the priority. It’s a balance between keeping people informed and retaining some sort of privacy for Oz and his family.”
