Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to Ex-Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on April 16 2019 at the Piranha Bar. Uli Spoke about his Triple Anniversary tour and did a deep dive into the making and recording of the classic live Scorpions album Tokyo Tapes. Uli Spoke about Tokyo Tapes set list, the choice of cover songs, adding the audience from Peter Frampton’s famous live album, Frampton Comes Alive. Uli also spoke about archival Super 8 film footage he has in his vault from all his years in the Scorpions whereas 70% of it has not yet been seen.
Watch the interview here:
When asked on why they chose to have cover songs on Tokyo Tapes
“They were just accidents, for me that wasn’t Scorpions. The band came from a Rock and Beatles background and we did used to play Johnny B Goode occasionally but that was because I was a Hendrix fan and we copied the Hendrix version. Why Long Tall Sally and Hound Dog how they made it to the album I’m still not sure and I don’t want to necessarily disown them but somehow maybe these songs should have not been there because we had more suitable ones. One song I do like off the album is taken from the Scorpions debut Lonesome Crow In Search of Peace of Mind, one that Micheal Schneker wrote, it’s is a masterpiece with beautiful lyrics by Klaus Meine, I love that song.”
When asked if there was any fixing of Tokyo Tapes Live album in the studio
“No, in fact there wasn’t enough of it because I was quite upset when I first heard the recordings because there was a mistake. Apparently the Japanese sound engineers recorded all the pre-sets with EQ’s and you don’t do that because after words you don’t get a chance to tweak the sounds as much and I was not happy with the sound of the album. I remember what it sounded like on stage, it sounded phenomenal particularly in that hall but what I heard on the album was a shadow of that. So that is why I never listen to the album. I never listened to the whole album in one go. ”
“I did the playing on the album and there were no overdubs afterwords we just left everything as it was, except for the audience clapping because we forgot to record the audience so we had no audience sound. I don’t know who’s idea it was in the studio, it wasn’t mine there was this massive album Frampton Comes Alive Album at the time, so somebody took the clapping from that recording and they put it on a loop so suddenly Sun Plaza hall becomes Stadium rock. There is your dirty little insight and it’s a true story nobody will deny it. So the audience of Frampton Comes Alive is on Scorpions Tokyo Tapes. We had a great audience but they weren’t recorded.”
When asked about the song if there was any left over material from the recording of Tokyo Tapes
“There were some and I am to blame for a couple of things that got left out. I didn’t think the song Catch your Train was good enough and I didn’t think Hell Cat was good enough. Then when I heard them recently when they did the re-release and I thought what was I thinking they were good enough I should have had them on. I was actually being a bit too critical at the time. But today I am really glad we did the album and we can be proud of.”
When asked if there was any video of his era with the Scorpions
“I loved taking Super 8 Film footage from day 1 with the Scorpions until my final days in 1978 I chronologically have all the footage from all the tours including Japan and some stuff has been released on the Tokyo Tapes revisited DVD but most of it is unreleased. It’s not live footage it’s all on tour behind the scene footage, about 70% is unseen. It’s the only footage that exists from the 70’s.”
To celebrate his upcoming 50th Stage Anniversary, he will perform concerts across North America this spring.
The two hour-plus programme will consist of carefully selected highlights from Uli’s entire musical career The 50th Anniversary set will naturally include the best of that timeless material, including The Sails of Charon, In Trance, Fly to the Rainbow and many other songs.
As a logical continuation of Uli’s journey into his own musical past he will also be reconnecting with the second very important part of his unique musical journey – that of his ground breaking Electric Sun period – during which he took the art of electric guitar playing to a completely new and unprecedented level.
Also a pre-show V.I.P. Uli will play excerpts from his stunning Metamorphosis of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Concerto as well as several pieces which feature him on classical, acoustic and flamenco guitar.

Jimmy Kay reporting live for The Metal Voice (and a guest) at City Hall in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, witnessed the unanimous passing of a vote to declare Montreal a Heavy Metal City on April 15 2019.
Watch the Live report here:
Jimmy Kay from The Metal Voice spoke to Montreal City Councillor Craig Sauve who is spearheading a motion to make Montreal, Quebec, Canada a Heavy Metal City on April 14 2019 prior to the vote.
When asked why he has decided to bring forth this motion to be voted on
“I have been a Metalhead my whole life, I am still passionate about it. The scene in Montreal has been extremely strong, the quality of metal music that has been coming out of Montreal (and Quebec) it’s world wide renowned. I wanted Montrealers to know and be proud of this amazing heritage we have. As a Metal head we sometimes don’t get all the loving and respect, so I wanted to give the institution some respect.”
When asked what are the cost / benefits to passing this resolution
“There is no real cost to passing this declaration. I have spent a few hours working on this resolution, is that a cost ? I work 70 hours a week for the city and I wanted to take a little time to do this. My first priority is to make sure the city runs and this is an added bonus (overtime work). Economically the benefits there are Heavy Metal tourism. This is giving us a big marketing boast nationally and internationally for Heavy Metal tourism .Metal heads across the world might want to come to Montreal and go see the Heavy Montreal festival or another festival or check out a band at one of the bars, of just be part of the vibe. Great marketing for Montreal, no cost.”

“Montreal has been a faithful tour stop for Megadeth since 1987’s “Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying” album, it very first major label release on Capitol Records. Ever since, the city and it’s heavy metal fan’s loyalty have helped us rise to headliner status at the largest arenas and festivals As well Heavy Montreal now being the premier festival recognized globally for its faithful representation to show what true metal looks like to the rest of the world.
Montreal’s people, the culture and it’s rich history lend even more to what makes metal bands everywhere flock to the area to perform for some of the most die hard and faithful fans anywhere on the planet. As Megadeth, we can’t wait to get back there to perform for you all again! “ -David Ellefson, Megadeth co-founder & bassist
“The great people of Montreal have a deep passion for music and they especially feel the drama and emotion that is found in Heavy Metal music. It is apparent for any musician that passes thru that city, that Montreal is very special for this genre of music.”

For The Metal VoiceNick H caught up with The Three Tremors at The Token Lounge on March 9th, 2019 and did a full metal report on the band talking about their new album, their live show, their next steps and what the members are up to outside of The Three Tremors.
Watch the interview here:
THE THREE TREMORS, the project featuring acclaimed heavy metal singers Tim “The Ripper” Owens (JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN), Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin (JAG PANZER) and Sean “The Hell Destroyer” Peck (CAGE, DEATH DEALER, DENNER/SHERMANN). THE THREE TREMORS’ self-titled debut LP was released on January 18th.
When asked the idea behind the band
“We decided to do it because there was a lot of mystery and intrigue behind the original idea and us as metal fans we were deprived of something that could have been awesome. It was obvious Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford were not going to do it, so we decided we are going to fulfill the prophecy. I was not going to be a project, it was going to be a live band playing our own songs. ” Sean Peck
When asked about the Trinity project with Blaze Bayley, Tim Owens and Geoff Tate comparing to the The Three Tremors
“We did that one song for Geoff Tate’s record but there were no plans to do an album. Maybe Geoff Tate’s original idea was to do a full album with the Trinity I don’t know. We did that Trinity tour and we had a lot of fun and we all got along really. The difference between The Three Tremors and The Trinity is that this is our own material.” Tim Owens
When asked about any news plans for The Three Tremors
“We will be releasing the debut album with all three singers singing singing by themselves of the debut CD. We also already have three killer pieces of artwork for all three solo albums. It will probably be a 3 cd set as one package and maybe throw in a new original song or two as well. Once we finish up on our North American tour we will begin work on the Second three Tremors album.” Sean Peck
When asked if they knew about the group the 3 T’s (Michael Jackson nephew’s band)
“I never seen that, never heard of that.” Sean Peck
“I am completed surprised, under the radar”, Harry Conklin
When asked Sean Peck if there will be a new studio Denner/Shermann Album
“Michael Denner 100% wants to do another record and Hank Shermann is getting ready to launch a solo album but he likes to be focused on one thing at a time but we will get Hank to come around somehow. We had a lot of music left over from the first two releases and I have been compiling stuff and I am going to do everything in my power to make it happen.” Sean
When asked being invited to sing on multiple projects and bands
“I get asked a lot to sing on other people’s records, more than people can imagine and I enjoy doing it, it’s nice to be in demand to do these things. In a perfect world it would nice to be in one band but I have to make a living and the only way to make a living is to be really busy, music is my job.” Tim Owens
When asked about his thoughts of KK Downing recent statement saying Tim is a better singer than Rob Halford
“I don’t agree, but it is flattering. I was in top form when I was in Judas Priest I’ll take it as a compliment.” Tim Owens
When asked about re-recording Judas Priest Jugulator and Demolition albums
“I do play almost all of the Jugulator CD live, I can record it live so maybe, or maybe record my favorite songs off of each record and put them out. I’m not for sure yet.” Tim Owens
When asked about his thoughts on Blaze Bayley albums with Iron Maiden
“I think they are great records and I love them,it’s funny cause years later we have become friends, I love those albums.” Tim Owens
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to legendary guitarist Michael Schenker. Schenker spoke about his upcoming new Michael Schenker Fest studio album the musical direction and guests, the second leg of the tour that is beginning in April 2019, the sad passing of his drummer Ted Mckenna and comments on his and his brother Rudolf relationship.
Watch the interview here:
When asked about the sad passing of drummer Ted Mckenna
“Our dear friend and great drummer Robert McKenna had passed away on the 19th of January this year. So as you know we were in the middle of recording our second album and getting ready for the tour. I mean, it was as unbelievable shock for us. It just shows you, you never know what’s gonna happen next, it’s just unbelievable but I’m sure he is watching and wants us to carry on rocking. I went to his funeral on the 19th of February, very sad, great loss, thank you for everything Ted. So now we have drummer Simon Phillips who helped us and recorded ten songs off our new album and Bodo Schopf will also be joining us on tour as a permanent drummer. We might even end up playing with two drummers in the future at some places maybe. Simon did a fantastic job on the new album which will be released on the 23rd of August and Bodo also played 3 songs on the album and did a fantastic job. ”
When asked about the musical direction of the new album and if it is completed
“I actually have just got the master right now, so basically if I approve the master today and if I don’t make any corrections it’s done. After the first album Graham Bonnet said I want to write my own lyrics and do my own vocals and so he did and he did a fantastic job, incredible. That alone gives the album a kind of new flavor. Robin McAuley will do his own songs and of course Gary Barden will too. It’s a continuation of the first album. ”
When asked if there will be any news guests on the new album
“Yes, I don’t know how much I can say but on the 23rd of August we have some really cool surprises coming up. On Michael Voss wrote 4 song that was supposed to be used as the all singer songs but only used three, he then had this idea to have Ronnie Romero to sing on the 4th song, who he worked with before and who sings for Ritchie Blackmore and it turned out fantastic, incredibles. It’s Called, We Are The Voice.’ I also wanted to put a Japanese guitarist on our Japanese album bonus track for Japan. So I chose the guitarist of Loudness Akira Takasaki he is jamming on one part of the song. ”
When asked what would it take to make peace with his brother Rudolf
“It has nothing do with peace Rudolf is dangerous for me I have to stay away from him, it’s the only thing I can do, he’s a bully and he takes advantage of his little brother.
What do you do if you have a bully on your back? The best you can do is stay away I have no bad feelings or anything for Rudolf god bless him do what you do. I don’t need to put myself into a vulnerable situation and that’s what I would do if I would connect with him, it would just be the more of the same bullshit, more off the same ripoff, He’s a charming person he achieves everything with charm but I’m an artist so whatever. So the best thing for me is to leave him alone and I am better off. ”
MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP vocalists Gary Barden and Graham Bonnet, Doogie White, plus Robin McAuley of the MCAULEY SCHENKER GROUP
MICHAEL SCHENKER FEST will kick off its U.S. tour on April 15 at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California. The trek will include performances in Vancouver, Chicago, and New York before concluding on May 18 in Austin.
