Portugal’s Hellven Records have just re-released VESSEL OF LIGHT‘s Thy Serpent Rise CD with bonus tracks not available anywhere else. In cooperation with the UK’s Faster Louder Records, this version includes the Jimi Hendrix cover of Foxy Lady and the Black Sabbath song Wasp.
Guitarist Dan Lorenzo said, “Thy Serpent Rise was the first VOL album to include (former Overkill drummer) Ron Lipnicki and (former Hades bassist) Jimmy Schulman. Nathan Opposition and I did the first VOL ep and Woodshed with just the two of us. We wanted to play live so it was obvious for me to add my buds Jimmy and Ron.”
Vessel Of Light played 10 shows and were busy playing the NY/NJ area when Covid shut everything down.
I really love our versions of these two cover songs available now for the first time on CD”
Slightly more than two years ago, VESSEL OF LIGHT had released three album in two years and the band were performing East Coast shows. Then Corona hit. Vessel Of Light used this time to release their fourth album in three years (Last Ride on California’s Nomad Eel Records). The band also recorded the Jimi Hendrix cover Foxy Lady. Watch the video below.
Foxy Lady got airtime on Sirius/XM, but the band were forced to cancel their much anticipated appearance at The Maryland Doom Fest.
Guitarist Dan Lorenzo said, “I was extremely disappointed VOL couldn’t play the Maryland Doom Fest, but (vocalist) Nathan (Opposition) was in the middle of moving from Cleveland to Austin. I had never written so much music before and it’s frustrating to me when the music just sits there.”
Lorenzo didn’t stop and his VOL bandmates Jimmy Schulman and Ron Lipnicki joined him along with Dangerous Toys vocalist Jason McMaster to record and release Cassius King Field Trip. Lorenzo kept writing and in addition to working on the 2nd Cassius King formed Patriarchs In Black with former Type O Negative/current Danzig drummer Johnny Kelly.
Lorenzo continued, “I was finalizing my guitar parts at JROD Productions in Pomona, NY recently when JROD showed me a video of his band Return To Darkness that this dude Craig Cefola had made for him. I was blown away and reached out to Craig to make a video for Patriarchs In Black. While I’m waiting to show the world that, I had Craig make a video for Vessel Of Light Foxy Lady. Foxy Lady isn’t available digitally-it was only released as a 7″ single on vinyl on Nomad Eel.”
Just recently Dan Lorenzo from CASSIUS KING and VESSEL OF LIGHT joined The Zach Moonshine Show to talk about the new Cassius King debut album, entitled ‘Field Trip’, including also questions from the audience and new music from the band.
The show features also tributes to Joey Jordison, Mike Howe, and Dusty Hill + new and old music from Murderdolls, Metal Church, Vessel Of Light, Cassius King, ZZ Top, State Of Mind, Jerry Cantrell, Slipknot, Skrog, Metallica, Pantera, White Crone, and battle of the bands winners – Dark Visitor!
Both Austin’s Jason McMaster and New Jersey’s Dan Lorenzo have been in many bands over the years. Lorenzo most notably in Hades and Non-Fiction and McMaster in Dangerous Toys and Broken Teeth to name a few, but up until now the two have never written together.
McMaster has sung the covers Mr. Speed and Sight For Sore Eyes under the moniker CASSIUS KING (Lorenzo, Lipnicki, Schulman and different vocalists and guests), but the two have just released the single Traveler along with Jimmy Schulman and Ron Lipnicki who both play with Lorenzo in his doom band Vessel Of Light.
“The last 3 years is the most music I’ve written in my life”, Lorenzo stated. “I’ve become obsessed with Vessel Of Light, but I have always had an eye to writing with Jason. We both have a shared love for 70s era Kiss, Aerosmith and Cheap Trick…of course you would never know that listening to the first song we are releasing. It’s more in a Sabbathy direction.”
CASSIUS KING are speaking with several labels about a full release and hope to have their debut LP out by the end of this year.
VESSEL OF LIGHT‘s Dan Lorenzo posted online a video for ‘The Cursed’, featuring Bobby Blitz, filmed from their LaMour -reunion. The video was created by Jason Stewart. ‘The Cursed’ is taken from ‘Room Full of Sinners’ 2007 album. Watch it below.
Dan Lorenzo on the video: “Bobby Blitz and I released THE CURSED Room Full of Sinners in 2007 with Mike Cristi on drums and Job The Raver on bass. This footage is from a LaMour reunion ( not at LaMour) where we jumped on stage and played 4-5 songs. Photos are from our only real show at the Highline Ballroom in NYC.”
Recent VESSEL OF LIGHT -news
Just recently, California’s Nomad Eel Records released VESSEL OF LIGHT’s single ‘Torture King’ (from their new release ‘Last Ride’). The B-side is a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Foxy Lady’ unavailable elsewhere. The 7″ is lathe cut and hand numbered. Artwork designed by vocalist Nathan Opposition. Torture King is the band’s latest video and single.
The most refined of VESSEL OF LIGHT’s releases, Last Ride, released October 23, 2020, via Nomad Eel Records, is rife with depth, harmonies, the trademark riffs and guitar sound of guitarist Dan Lorenzo while also maintaining a familiar feel. Like the haunting first single and title track from Last Ride, “There’s No Escape” has a sinister lyrical theme, keeping in line with the darker subjects that permeate this record.
Founded in 2017 by Lorenzo, best known for his work with seminal New Jersey bands Hades and Non-Fiction, and Cleveland based Opposition, the duo released two albums, Vessel of Light and Woodshed, with Italian label Argonauta Records before introducing former Overkill drummer Ron Lipnicki and former Hades bassist Jimmy Schulman into the fold for the recording of a third album, Thy Serpent Rise. It wasn’t until VESSEL OF LIGHT’s first live show before a sold-out crowd at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom with Life of Agony that vocalist and the band’s new drummer and bassist finally met, merely hours before the quartet hit the stage.
