It only rarely happens that progressive metal bands make their way into the mainstream music media but it did when VOLA performed their song ’Alien Shivers’ at the major Danish music award show GAFFA-PRISEN in Aarhus, Denmark.
VOLA states: ”We are super happy to have gotten the opportunity to play at GAFFA-PRISEN along with great artists from many different genres and fields. It is very exciting to see that the metal genre seems to be growing in Denmark and we find it promising that we, as a band from a niche genre that is often excluded from mainstream music events and media in Denmark, now get invited to perform at such a big, popular event”.
VOLA is a Copenhagen based Danish-Swedish progmetal band, consisting of Asger Rostboell Mygind, Nicolai Mogensen, Martin Bruun Werner and Adam Janzi. They appeared on the scene with the EP Homesick Machinery in 2008 and has since released yet another EP Monsters in 2011 and 2 full length albums: Inamazes (2016) and Applause From A DistantCrowd (2018). The band has been touring extensively the last couple of years supporting Dream Theatre, MONUMENTS, and Haken which lead to their first tour as headliners in September 2019 playing high energy gigs to enthusiastic fans in the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and the Czech republic, many of them sold out. VOLA are currently recording their third full-length album, which will be released via Mascot Records at a still unannounced date.
Copenhagen’s VOLA are delighted to announce that they will be hitting the road in February-March across Europe as main support to HAKEN, with the tour being opened by Bent Knee. To celebrate this they are also releasing the lyric video to live favourite ‘Whaler’, watch it below.
The tour is hot on the heels of their triumphant October-November 2018 dates with MONUMENTS and the release of ‘Applause Of A Distant Crowd,’ which came out in October on Mascot Records. The album is the follow up to 2016s ‘Inmazes’. Through 2018 they also played explosive sets at Bloodstock Festival (UK), Tech Fest (UK), Damnation Festival (UK), Euroblast (Germany) and Complexity Festival (Netherlands) which has led Prog Magazine to declare them “one of prog’s hottest prospects,” Metal Hammer to revel in their “shimmering tech metal” and pick up fans in the shape of Trivium’s Matt Heafy and Paulo Gregoletto.
Talking about the upcoming tour, drummer Adam Janzi says, “Ever since we got back from the tour we did this fall, we’ve been itching to get out and perform live even more. We’re very happy to get the chance to tour in Europe again, this time with the very talented Haken and Bent Knee. This tour will be reaching parts of Scandinavia, which is exciting to us since it’s our home. Being out on the road, traveling and struggling together as well as seeing some familiar and some new faces are such exhilarating experiences. We look forward to meeting you at the shows and making these evenings memorable together!”
Whilst on the video, singer/guitarist Asger Mygind said, “We’re pleased to present to you the official lyric video for the track ‘Whaler’. ‘Whaler’ became one of our favorite songs to play during our fall Europe tour last year, due to its slow and weighty groove. It was always an enjoyable experience to burst into the main theme of the song – without notice – and watch how people would respond to the more straight-forward vibe of the riff. Because of all the fun we had with this track on stage, we thought it would be appropriate to present the lyrics on a backdrop of a live performance. The video was created by Brownstache Productions and it contains footage from Euroblast 2018.”
On the new album, Asger Mygind (vocals/guitar), Martin Werner (keys), Nicolai Mogensen (bass) and Adam Janzi (drums) probe society’s distractions from thoughtfulness and examine the way human relationships have evolved whilst touching upon fear and anxiety. Where their debut ‘Inmazes’ dealt with the struggle that came with being trapped in mental mazes, the themes are now focused on the outside world rather than internal conflict. The album title is a metaphor derived from our relationship with social media, how we can appear close but be miles apart.
Mygind elaborates: “We spend a lot of time trying to present ourselves in a flattering light in the pursuit of continuous applause, even if it’s a distant applause from those you may not connect with away from the screens.”

Danish genre-mashing quartet VOLA has teamed up, once again, with Metal Shock Finland to premiere for Finland, the band’s Official New Video “Stray The Skies (October Sessions)”!
VOLA today release their acoustic EP ‘October Session’, worldwide through all digital channels. ‘October Session’ contains two tracks: acoustic versions of ‘Gutter Moon’ and ‘Stray The Skies’. The original, electric versions of both songs were featured on the band’s critically acclaimed 2016 Mascot Records label debut ‘Inmazes’. Until now, both ‘October Session’ tracks were only available on the vinyl version of ‘Inmazes’.
To accompany the release of the ‘October Session’ EP, Vola present a stunning video for ‘Stray The Skies (October Session)’, shot by Fly High Productions, premiering now for Finnish territory, on Metal Shock Finland. The video was shot in 3 different locations in Jutland, Denmark. Watch it below.
Comments Tarja Virmakari, Metal Shock Finland‘s CEO/Founder/President: “The video ‘Stray The Skies (October Session)’ takes us to a pleasant journey into the mind, seeking happiness, and finding it eventually, despite of everything! Flavoured with progressive rock mix of the 70’s together with sounds of our modern days, topped by clear, beautiful vocal lines. Call it a chill-out, or whatever, but this video has a lot of good vibes, and who wouldn’t need some peace of mind in this crazy world?”
Vola’s vocalist / guitarist Asger Mygind about the EP and video: “When our label approached us about wanting to rerelease Inmazes they also asked us about bonus tracks for the album. During the sessions for Inmazes we didn’t record anything else than the 10 songs you hear on the record, so we had to create something from scratch if we wanted to pursue the idea of bonus material. While we wholeheartedly enjoy playing and making music that is energetic and consists of many layers, we also find a lot of inspiration in toned down, mellow music (like you hear on ‘Emily’, for example), and we rather quickly decided to follow this path for the extra material. How would the songs from Inmazes sound if we interpreted them with this mind set? We decided to work on ‘Stray The Skies’ and ‘Gutter Moon’ to see what we could come up with. Consisting of only vocals, keys, acoustic guitar and percussion, these versions turned out very different from their loud siblings. We called them October Session – since they were arranged and recorded in October 2015 – and put them on the physical releases of Inmazes (B-side and download code). Now they are finally available on streaming services as well. Enjoy.”
Check out also the animated video for the original, electric version of ‘Stray the Skies’, which premiered on Metal Shock Finland last September:

Mascot Records proudly presents Inmazes, an album that will appeal to all those who love music that is adventurous and compelling. After three years of writing, recording and perfecting their craft, VOLA self-released InMazes digitally in 2015. Prior to this album the band had already released two EP’s. Guitar player and singer Asger Mygind sees a steady development from 2011’s Monsters towards Inmazes: “On Monsters we started experimenting with 7-string guitars and a lot of polymetrics – odd-time signatures over a straight 4/4 beat in our case. And it worked so well on the EP that we wanted to elaborate on this for a full album. But I think we have gotten better at producing our music as a band, which has given way to a tighter and more in-your-face vibe on Inmazes. We are also one person less than on Monsters (guitarist and singer Niels Dreijer Madsen quit the band in 2012), so in my case I’ve had to fill out more space as guitarist and singer, as Niels also played guitar and sang a lot of vocal harmonies.”
All in all, creating Inmazes after the two EP’s was a liberating experience for Mygind and his bandmates. “The album format of course also allows for a more voluminous story to be told in music and lyrics, which can lead to an overall more rewarding creative experience – and by that – a more rewarding listening experience.”
When Mygind was in highschool he started writing songs and jamming with his friends in a rehearsal room in the basement of his parents’ house in Copenhagen. “The collaboration grew out of a common interest in melodic rock and weird time signatures. We’d listen to stuff like Dream Theater, Freak Kitchen, Opeth and Porcupine Tree and tried to play their songs in order to explore what kind of sound we could create as a unit. And also because it was just a lot of fun!”
After recording a couple of demos the band recorded their EP, Homesick Machinery, in 2008. But that was a different VOLA than it is today. Besides Mygind only keyboard player Martin Werner can be heard on the EP. In the following years the band found its form, with bass player Nicolai Mogensen and drummer Felix Ewert joining in 2011, before the recording of Monsters.
At times futuristic, the music of VOLA has references to tech-prog and pop as well. Further touching on the band’s influences, Mygind states: “I’ve always been a big fan of bands like Opeth and Porcupine Tree, and they write very dynamic songs, so I think the influence to explore dynamics and moods came from that place initially.” Then again, he admits, he is influenced just as much by just the opposite: groove-based, monotonous music. “Some big influences of heavier music are Devin Townsend, Soilwork and Meshuggah. But it doesn’t have to be metal at all as long as it has a spectacular beat, groovy odd-time groupings, an interesting mood or something else along those lines. Massive Attack‘s 100th Window is a big influence. It’s monotonous but it still feels like it’s constantly evolving. Steven Wilson‘s Insurgentes and Ulver’s Shadows Of The Sun both have a darkness that we find very fascinating.”
“What weI’ve always liked from artists like Steven Wilson and Devin Townsend is that the music can change the physical state you’re in. It’s not just sound reaching your ears. It’s a force of a larger scale. There is nothing like a big chorus that suddenly opens up and elevates your body to the point where it almost feels like you levitate from the floor. That’s one of the feelings we want to evoke with our music.”
Lyrically, Inmazes deals with entrapment. Mygind: “The album tries to capture this feeling of being trapped in mental mazes and not being able to fully experience happiness, basically. How is this struggle visualized in your own mind and how do your surroundings react to the behaviour caused by it. Where the EP Monsters deals with strategies on how to escape the negative thought patterns, Inmazes is more about the distance these thoughts can create between people.”
Inmazes was mixed by Asger Mygind himself and mastered by Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studio. Bogren worked with Opeth, Katatonia, Soilwork, Amon Amarth, Symphony X, Paradise Lost, Devin Townsend, Fates Warning and Arch Enemy, amongst others. Mygind: “I’ve been a fan of Jens Bogren ever since I heard The Great Cold Distance by Katatonia, which I think is an amazing record with a fantastic production and mix. I like the way he keeps the elements very punchy but still maintains a sort of softness to the overall sonics. He mastered our EP Monsters and we were so fond of the result that we really also wanted him to do Inmazes too. Jens has a signature sound which works great if you want a fat and dynamic mix or master, that is pleasing to the ear.”
Inmazes was received very well by a large number of metal and progrock blogs throughout the world. In the same time VOLA impressed with the cleverly animated videos for the quite positive-sounding rock track Gutter Moon and dreamy Emily, the quietest song on the album. The videos are created by bassist Nicolai Mogensen and his girlfriend, and are clearly in line with the album’s artwork, which is based on a watercolour/acrylic drawing by Danish artist Anders Thrane.
Before the end of 2015, the band played high-profile gigs like Euroblast in Germany and ProgPower Europe in the Netherlands. Says Mygind: “We felt very proud. We haven’t played that many shows in total, so to step upon a big stage in a foreign country and experience the incredibly positive energy coming from the crowd, was amazing. We didn’t know what to expect, so it blew us all away.”
