WHILE HEAVEN WEPT: Released New Lyric Video For ‘Souls In Permafrost’

Virginia’s long running epic metal legends WHILE HEAVEN WEPT are commemorating their 25th year with the release of their sixth full length album “Suspended At Aphelion” via Nuclear Blast this October. The band has recently posted the official lyric video for the track ‘Souls In Permafrost’ online, the video can be seen below:

Commented guitarist, keyboardist & vocalist Tom Philips: “Part 7 of »Suspended At Aphelion« is one of my favorite parts and epitomizes the madness of the album – this is what I’ve meant about music moving in every direction and intense counterpoint – with the angular guitar lines, Jim’s serpentine bassline, the gothic choir chants all juxtaposed beneath Rain’s lead vocal, this ‘rough edit’ of ‘Permafrost’ is about as complex as it gets without being overtly technical/self-aggrandizing…plus it provides a ‘sneak peak’ into what is to come with Part 8 as well!”

The cover art for “Suspended At Aphelion” was once again created by Gustavo Sazes (MORBID ANGEL, ARCH ENEMY etc.), and three separate audio masters were optimized for LP, CD, and digital download formats.

Pitchfork.com is hosting the world premiere of the track “Heartburst”, a mournful lament off Suspended At Aphelion, the sixth studio album, on Nuclear Blast, by Virginia’s long running epic metallers WHILE HEAVEN WEPT.

“The album revels in its theatricality, its baroque orchestration and rippling leads polished to a fine sheen,” praises Pitchfork journalist Kim Kelly. “The overall effect is nothing short of triumphant.”

Today the band releases the third album trailer, based on the lyrics and the concept of “Suspended At Aphelion”.

Commented guitarist, keyboardist & vocalist Tom Philips: “In the end, it’s ALWAYS about the music… and in the case of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, it’s getting more and more difficult to describe without using 50 adjectives! There’s no question that »Suspended At Aphelion« is truly a natural progression from whence we came, yet all of our initial influences from a quarter century ago remain intact, thus this album is truly the embodiment of all that we’ve ever been as well as a representation of where we are today. It’s all in there…the twists and turns, mazes of time and key signature changes, intense contrasts of dark and light (or dark and darker)…and most importantly, sincere emotions conveyed with all the heart and spirit that we have. That said, it’s important to understand that »Suspended At Aphelion« is an entity unto itself…the focus was on subtlety, maturity, and especially dynamics; this one was never about bludgeoning people a la »The Drowning Years« or »Sorrow Of The Angels«, rather it’s true impact is revealed via peeling back the complex layers over the course of subsequent listens – there’s SO much happening on this album that may not even be obvious first time through. There really is music moving in every direction simultaneously through the majority of the album…it’s contrapuntal in nature, and harmonically, it is from another universe seldom heard outside of contemporary classical music. Repeated journeys through »Suspended At Aphelion« will truly yield the greatest rewards – and I can’t emphasize enough just how important it is to take in the entire thing…to say there are no “singles” on this album would be an understatement!”

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT: Reveal New Album Title, Celebrate 25th Anniversary

American metallers WHILE HEAVEN WEPT have entered the studio to begin recording the first of two brand new albums, entitled “Suspended At Aphelion” which will be released via Nuclear Blast Records in late 2014.

Founding guitarist and primary composer Tom Phillips provides more insight into what is clearly the single greatest work of the band’s career so far:  “If (2011’s) »Fear Of Infinity« was our »Caress Of Steel«, »Suspended At Aphelion« is without question our »2112« – and anyone familiar with the stories behind those RUSH albums will understand that where we’re coming from is very similar both musically and circumstantially. »Suspended At Aphelion« is the culmination of 25 years and embodies everything that WHILE HEAVEN WEPT has ever represented – yet so much more; it’s everything we’ve got to give in our hearts and souls.”

He continues: “The album really is, quite simply, the greatest EPIC in our canon in that it is a single, 40+ minute monolith divided into 11 parts – in the tradition of the aforementioned »2112« and our own ‘The Furthest Shore’, ‘Finality’, and ‘Thus With A Kiss I Die’, amongst others. Yet, musically…while clearly this is WHILE HEAVEN WEPT …it’s very much beyond anything else we’ve ever done…VERY progressive, but in a harmonic sense more than the technical. The bottom line is, if you enjoyed those aforementioned “mini-epics” – or the »Vast Oceans Lachrymose« album for that matter – then this is the elevation and evolution several years beyond those. We’ve approached this one as if it were to be our last – so again, it’s everything we’ve got!”

The album will feature some additional highly-esteemed musicians including the extraordinary drummer Mark Zonder of FATES WARNING and WARLORD fame, as well as world-renowned classical guitarist Christopher Ladd, whom Tom has known since childhood. Both will be performing throughout the entire album and more details regarding their involvement will follow in forthcoming press releases.

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT have once again aligned with Gustavo Sazes for the cover art – the man responsible for the stunning “Fear Of Infinity” cover, and Kevin 131 – engineer and co-producer of the “Of Empires Forlorn” album from 2003.

Tom says: “The team we have assembled to realize this mammoth work is nothing short of incredible, and I cannot think of a better way to commemorate a quarter of a century of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT than to release the definitive statement of the band. Prepare yourselves for an epic journey far beyond anything you’ve ever known from us!”

Lead singer Rain Irving added: “Never before, have I been so proud to be associated with a musical endeavor. No disrespect to any of our works in the past, but this one is special and worth every ounce of excitement I feel inside. This is the kind of record that will allow me to “rest peacefully” if you will, the day I decide I’m done with my career.”
