Finnish Metal wolves SONATA ARCTICA are howling again – namely in the form of a new live DVD! “Live In Finland” shows the full concert which was played on the 15th of April 2011 in Club Teatria in Oulu, Finland. Apart from classics à la ´Full Moon´ or ´Letter To Dana´, various tracks of the current record “The Days Of Grays“ have found their way into the setlist, thus on the DVD as well. This heady mixture of old and new compositions of SONATA ARCTICA is supplemented by a bonus DVD on which four recorded songs of the very own SONATA ARCTICA festival can be found, that took place on the 8th of August 2009 in Kemi. Furthermore, the viewer can enjoy the music videos of `Don’t Say A Word’, ´Paid In Full´ and ´Flag In The Ground´ as well as a photo galery and some making of’s that document the DVD’s creation. The enclosed bonus CD with eight audio recordings of the festival concert puts the final touches on this release, so that “Live In Finland“ will make each SONATA ARCTICA fan cry tears of joy.
On November 18, members from high profile Norwegian metal bands, including DARKTHRONE, SATYRICON and TAAKE, will take part in a live show called “Algir – Støttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen”, at Bergen’s prime rock venue, Garage. The aim? Raise awareness for colon cancer. In addition, HELHEIM, GRAVDAL and SLAVIA themselves will perform in order to help raise funds and provide 31-year-old Jonas Christiansen with a chance to fight the disease.
Diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year, the SLAVIA vocalist has gone through conventional treatment at Norwegian hospital Haukeland in Bergen but the prognosis has remained the same. After much deliberation amongst Jonas, friends and N.I.F.A.B. (Norwegian Institute For Alternative Treatment), Danish International Clinic for Cancer Treatment Humlegaarden was picked as the best place to help extend Christiansen‘s life. By arranging this live show, the organizers hope to raise enough money for Jonas to get additional treatment aside that which he has already received at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen.
Born and brought up in Kongsberg in the Eighties, Jonas Christiansen put his original band SLAVIA on hiatus and moved to Oslo to concentrate on Moonfog Productions‘ newly-signed band DISIPLIN in 2003. While their self-titled debut album quickly shot them onto the national and international stratosphere through their contagious, mid-tempo riffs intermittently layered around chilly black metal blast beats, it was their second album, “Anti-Life”, that saw the Norwegian ensemble truly owning their musical skills. As DISIPLIN went through a variety of personnel changes in 2005, Christiansen moved back to Bergen and resurrected his original project SLAVIA which released debut album, “Strength And Vision”, through Drakkar in 2007. A third album is planned to be released in early 2012 — if Jonas‘s health improves.
If you cannot make this show, you can also help Jonas Christensen by donating to the Jonas R. Christiansen‘s fund here.

The original lineup of the legendary heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH — Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) — has reunited and will release a brand new album in 2012. The group’s first studio effort in 33 years will be produced by Rick Rubin, who has previously worked with METALLICA, SLIPKNOT, SLAYER and SYSTEM OF A DOWN, among many others. A world tour will follow, including an appearance at the U.K.’s Download festival on June 10, 2012.
The songwriting process for BLACK SABBATH‘s new album is already half complete, and the band hopes to begin recording the new CD in January. A mid-2012 release is expected.
BLACK SABBATH‘s reunion was officially confirmed a few minutes ago during a special announcement ceremony at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California — the same venue where the band made its Los Angeles debut on November 11, 1970 (41 years ago), opening for ALICE COOPER. All four original members of the legendary heavy metal group attended the event, which was hosted by former BLACK FLAG frontman Henry Rollins.
A three-and-a-half-minute reunion-announcement video can be seen below.
The Ozzy-fronted lineup of SABBATH hasn’t toured since 2005 and last appeared together when they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2006. They attempted to cut a new album — their first since 1978’s “Never Say Die!” — with Rick Rubin in 1999, but the sessions fell apart after just a couple of songs and Osbourne turned his attention to his solo career. The Ronnie James Dio lineup reunited under the moniker HEAVEN & HELL in 2006 but split four years later, after Dio passed away.
Iommi told U.K.’s Terrorizer magazine that the four original members of BLACK SABBATH recently got together in a rehearsal room for the first time in years, adding, “[We] played some of the old stuff and to be together again was great. We’re all on good terms and we’re at a stage where we can play together again. It would be good if we could and I suppose it’s the closest it’s been to be able to do that.”
Osbourne told Billboard.com last month that a reunion of the original BLACK SABBATH lineup was a “very, very strong possibility.” He added, “It’s in the very early stages, so we haven’t recorded anything yet. If it works out, it’ll work out. If it doesn’t, I’ll keep doing my thing.”
The Birmingham Mail reported in August that the original SABBATH lineup had begun rehearsing and writing music in secret for a new album. The Mail based its story around remarks made by Iommi, who later said the comments were off the record and taken out of context. Iommi‘s manager, however, did not deny that a reunion was underway.
Speculation about a reunion was fueled later that month when Ozzy skipped the Hollywood premiere of the documentary about his life, “God Bless Ozzy Osbourne”. Both his son Jack and daughter Kelly hinted at the time that their dad was “doing something that is very, very exciting.”
Osbourne and Iommi last year amicably resolved their problems over the ownership of the BLACK SABBATH name and court proceedings in New York were discontinued.
Ozzy filed a lawsuit against Iommi in May 2009, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band’s name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Osbourne sued Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the “Black Sabbath” trademark, along with a portion of Iommi‘s profits from use of the name.
The Manhattan federal court suit also charged that Osbourne‘s “signature lead vocals” are largely responsible for the band’s “extraordinary success,” noting that its popularity plummeted during his absence from 1980 through 1996.
Lawyer Andrew DeVore argued that Osbourne signed away all his rights to the BLACK SABBATH trademark after he quit the band in 1979.
Osbourne‘s lawyer, Howard Shire, called that agreement a “red herring” that was “repudiated” when the singer rejoined in 1997 and took over “quality control” of the band’s merchandise, tours and recordings.
According to the New York Post, former ANTHRAX singer Dan Nelson filed a $2.65 million suit yesterday over the fallout from his 2009 oust from the band.
Dan Nelson says drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello and guitarist Scott Ian falsely stated in “numerous interviews” that he had “abruptly resigned” after getting sick, forcing a cancelation of a tour.
The Long Island native says his ex-bandmates’ “intentional defamation” has caused him a loss of income and damaged his reputation.
The Manhattan federal court filing further charges that Nelson co-wrote the tunes on the band’s latest album, Worship Music, but hasn’t gotten his fair share of the profits.

A feature on VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen makes the cover of Guitar Player Magazine’s Holiday 2011 issue. The article, The House That Eddie Built: Inside Van Halen’s Dream Machines, is in the issue on newsstands now.
Van Halen News Desk reports that VAN HALEN has recently signed with Interscope Records (not Columbia Records as rumors stated). The new, as yet untitled album is completely finished and due to be released in early 2012.
Furthermore, the Grammy Awards are hinting strongly that Van Halen will make their announcement at the Grammy Nominations Concert held in Los Angeles, CA on November 30th, aired live on CBS.
This recording will be Van Halen’s first album with vocalist David Lee Roth in more than 25 years, and their first new music as a band in seven years.
