Roadrunner have asked a bunch of their artists to fill out a brief survey telling us the highlights (and lowlights) of their year. Here’s what Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera had to say:
Best show you played: Soulfly live in Sao Paulo. The show was put together by fans. They demanded to see Soulfly live and the energy in the building was unbelievable. They sang every song so loud and I had my son, Zyon, playing drums and he stage dived into the crowd at the end of the show. What a great night!
Best show you saw: Soundgarden at the Big Day Out festival in Australia. They played all their best songs. They played lots of old stuff, it was great! We got to meet them in the airport and they were really cool guys. We also met Tony Hawk. He had the dressing room next to Cavalera Conspiracy‘s.
Favorite thing you ate/drank: Steaks in Argentina. We went to our favorite place called Las Nazareno’s with the guys from Mastodon, and Roy [Mayorga] and Johnny [Chow] from Stone Sour. My favorite drink is Guarana!
Favorite song of 2012: Deftones, “Poltergeist,” from their new album. Wicked!
Most interesting interview question you were asked this year: “I’m not gonna ask you any questions about Sepultura.” That was a new one!
Place you visited for the first time: Bangkok, Thailand. Soulfly played there. It was a great show and it’s a great city full of energy and mysticism in the air.
Biggest celebrity you met: Tony Hawk in Australia. He was skateboarding with the Big Day Out festival and we had dressing rooms right next to each other. Me and my brother went over to his dressing room to say hi; Igor gave him a Cavalera Conspiracy CD.
Personal highlight of the year: Playing with Cavalera Conspiracy in my hometown, Belo Horizonte. Taking my wife and my kids to visit the house where I grew up. It was awesome. Pure nostalgia, and at the concert we played “Troops of Doom” with Sepultura‘s original guitarist, Jairo!
