Tehelka recently conducted an interview with drummer Chris Adler of Richmond, Virginia metallers LAMB OF GOD. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Tehelka: Was starting out as a band in the ’90s harder than it is now? If so, why? What was it that worked for you?
Chris: Starting a band then was hard, but easier than it is now. The Internet was just beginning then and we were distributing all our music online. We would play anywhere we could — at house parties, functions, everything. That, I believe, is the key to success — to be able to get out and play. Our goal was not to make money; you can’t expect art to pay very well. We didn’t expect to be METALLICA. Things are different now and every kid who has a laptop can make music in his basement with high-quality sounds, live with his parents and pay bills. People have to try much harder now; every six minutes, there is a better-sounding band releasing a track.
Tehelka: A few days ago, [LAMB OF GOD] vocalist Randy Blythe said the industry is dying because Marilyn Manson‘s new ablum opened at #10. What are your thoughts on that?
Chris: Randy and I don’t always agree. According to me, Manson‘s career finished a long time ago.
Tehelka: Tells us about your new album and what makes it different from the previous ones?
Chris: “Resolution” is a little different from our two previous albums. The songs are more progressive and dynamic. We have picked a lot from our earlier records, the ones before the two last ones. It is difficult to produce seven records that sound different without getting boring.

Kamran Haq, concert promoter at Mutiny Events, has tweeted a picture of what he claims is the setlist for tonight’s (Saturday, May 19) BLACK SABBATH headlining performance at the 3,800-capacity O2 Academy in Birmingham, England. BLACK SABBATH‘s first performance in the band’s hometown in 13 years will feature three-quarters of the legendary heavy metal act’s original lineup — guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler. Tommy Clufetos, a member of Ozzy‘s solo band, is filling in for original SABBATH drummer Bill Ward, who is sitting out the group’s reunion shows due to a contractual dispute with his bandmates.
All tickets for tonight’s show reportedly sold out within 10 minutes of going on sale on May 4.
BLACK SABBATH was supposed to tour the Europe and North America this year as part of a worldwide trek in support of a new album, but guitarist Tony Iommi‘s cancer diagnosis put those plans on hold.
Ozzy, Iommi and Butler recently spent time in London recording their first album together in 33 years, although without drummer Bill Ward it is not the original SABBATH reunion announced last November. Source: Blabbermouth.net

SLAYER drum tornado Dave Lombardo spoke with Zisis Petkanas from Rock Overdose recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Rock Overdose: I heard that you Slayer rehearsing again and that nine songs are ready, right?
Lombardo: “Yes I said that. King and I have these songs, we are working on them. But we will release only one EP.”
Rock Overdose: Just an EP?
Lombardo: “Yes only EP. We will release two songs.”
Rock Overdose: This summer?
Lombardo: “I think so, I’m almost certain. I don’t know how the schedule is or it is evolved.”
Rock Overdose: Could you give us more details?
Lombardo: “No, I don’t know any details. I’ve got no details. I just know this. Kerry and Tom are rcording it right now, they are doing the vocals.”

Slayer recently issued the following health status of their “brother” Jeff Hanneman:
“Slayer fans everywhere – it’s time to let you know what is going on with our brother Jeff Hanneman. As you know, Jeff was bitten by a spider more than a year ago, but what you may not have known was that for a couple of days after he went to the ER, things were touch-and-go. There was talk that he might have to have his arm amputated, and we didn’t know if he was going to pull through at all. He was in a medically-induced coma for a few days and had several operations to remove the dead and dying tissue from his arm. So, understand, he was in really, really bad shape. It’s been about a year since he got out of the hospital, and since then, he had to learn to walk again, he’s had several painful skin grafts, he’s been in rehab doing exercises to regain the strength in his arm; but best of all, he’s been playing guitar. We were all excited when he joined us onstage for the encore a year ago at The Big Four show at Coachella (see photo below).

Since then, we’ve given him all the time and support he’s needed to continue his rehab so he can come back to the band fully recovered and able to deliver the kind of shows we all want him to. While Jeff’s been doing some writing and has been coming to rehearsal over the past several weeks, he has decided he needs to take more time to continue his rehab. While we want him back onstage with the band, all of us support his decision. So, we’re very grateful that Gary Holt (EXODUS) will continue to fill in for Jeff, and will tour with us until Jeff completes his rehab and is ready to return. How long will that be? The best and most honest answer we can give you is ‘as long as it takes.’ We also wanted you to know that we’ve been doing some writing and recording for the next Slayer album – we’ve tracked a few songs, and will finish the album when we’re off the road later this year. Gary will join us on tour in Europe and the UK in May and June, and then we’ll all see you on this Summer’s Mayhem Festival.

ROADRUNNER has issued the following:
Anyone who’s seen Opeth live knows that frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt is a master of absurdist between-song banter. And in the video below, that’s the side of him that’s showcased, as some crazy fan edited together all his stage commentary from the band’s recent performance in Atlanta on the Heritage Hunter tour with Mastodon and Ghost. Enjoy!
Opeth‘s latest album, Heritage, is available now in the Roadrunner webstore.
Former GORGOROTH/GOD SEED frontman Gaahl (real name: Kristian Eivind Espedal) stars in a new Norwegian film called “Flukt” (English: “Escape”). An action picture set in the remote Norwegian countryside during the 1300s, it was helmed by “Cold Prey” director Roar Uthaug and features Norwegian actress Ingrid Bolsø Berdal in the role of the leader of a group of outlaws living in the mountains.
Synopsis: “The film takes place in the year 1363. Black Death has killed half the population. Many travel from death and misery in search of a better life elsewhere. But the country is sparsely populated, and in the mountains, raging outlaw gangs and a life is worth little.”
Uthaug said, “‘Escape’ should be a grand adventure that takes us back to a time that is little described in the Norwegian film. It should be an epic rollercoaster ride of a thriller.”
“Flukt” is scheduled to premiere on September 28. Check out a trailer below.
