Progressive metal band Mirrormaze took the chance to answer a few questions for Metal Shock Finland on release of their new album ‘Walkabout’.
1. Welcome to Metal Shock Finland, I’m Dylan Raine, who are you?
Nice to meet you Dylan, I’m Davide Penna the song writer of MirrorMaze.
2. Can you tell me about the origins of the music and how everything came together?
Samuele and I formed MirrorMaze in 2008.The main goal since the beginning was to write progressive metal mixed with alternative metal music.
In 2009, with demo material, we had to the search of high-profile musicians to complete the line-up.
During the year Fabio D’Amore (bass and backing vocalist for Fairyland, Serenity, Pathosray) joined the project as our new lead singer and bass player.
Recordings sessions started right after at Artesonika studios in early 2010. While the recordings our aim was to seek a very special guest to perfom on the record and Ray Alder from Fates Warning and Redemption was contacted to sing on the track “Deeper Signs”.
In our opinion the blending of our singer and Ray Alder creates a unique sound and give the song a deep and special musical meaning.
To end the recordings we called a session man, Matteo Maselli, to play drums for us.
The mix and mastering was given to the amazing Staffan Karlsson (Stevie Wonder, Nathan East, Earth Wind & Fire, The Roxette and Firewind) in his Landgren Studio 5.1 in Sweden. It’s some month later that we found the definitive line up with Fabio Nasuelli on drums and Juan Manuel Savoini on bass.
“Silent Night”, the new video from Pennsylvania’s WAR OF AGES, can be seen below. The clip was directed by DJ Cosgrove of RSM Creative.
“Silent Night” comes off WAR OF AGES‘ fifth album, “Return To Life”, which was released on April 24 via Facedown Records. The CD was recorded with producer Chris “Zeuss” Harris at Planet Z Studios (SHADOWS FALL, CHIMAIRA, HATEBREED) and it features some of the band’s “most personal material,” according to a press release.
WAR OF AGES has toured with AS I LAY DYING, DEMON HUNTER, SOILWORK, NORMA JEAN, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, and more, and headlined this year’s Facedown Fest on April 7 in Pomona, California.
Commented the band: “We are extremely excited about our ‘Return To Life’ release in every way. Musically, we stuck to our roots, brought back the heavy rhythmic style and mixed it with the maturity of having four previous albums under our belts. We also joined forces with producer Zeuss, who boasts a catalog with names like TERROR, EMMURE, HATEBREED, etc… Not only is this album instrumentally rhythmic, it is also vocally rhythmic. Leroy [Hamp, vocals] stepped out of his comfort zone and ventured into the realms of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, COMEBACK KID, and DARKEST HOUR, and mixed each with his own style. We plan to continue in this direction lyrically, vocally, and musically for our future albums.”
“Return To Life” was released on CD, LP and digital formats.
Mark Taylor of Über Röck recently conducted an interview with FIREWIND/OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Gus G. . You can now watch the chat below.
FIREWIND‘s new album, “Few Against Many”, will be released in Europe on May 21 via Century Media Records and in North America on May 22 through DisManic, Inc. via eOne Distribution. The CD was mixed by Jason Suecof and Eyal Levi at Audiohammer Studios (TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, DEATH ANGEL) in Sanford, Florida.
Produced by Gus, “Few Against Many” was recorded with his longtime bandmates, vocalist Apollo Papathanasio, keyboardist/guitarist Bob Katsionis and bassist Petros Christo, at Valve Studio in Greece as well as the Sweetspot Studios in Sweden and sees the band expanding on its signature melodic sound with some of its most aggressive songs to date. The CD also marks the recording debut of new FIREWIND drummer Johan Nunez (NIGHTRAGE). The young Belgian is regarded by Gus as a “phenomenal talent,” and anyone that witnessed him on the band’s most recent world tour will no doubt agree.
“Few Against Many” track listing:
01. Wall Of Sound
02. Losing My Mind
03. Few Against Many
04. The Undying Fire
05. Another Dimension
06. Glorious

While the album’s standard version will be available in the CD format as well as LP and also as digital download, “Few Against Many” will also be released as limited-edition digipak CD with two special bonus tracks: “Battleborn” and an acoustic version of “No Heroes, No Sinners”.
The “Wall Of Sound” video can be seen below. The clip was filmed by Colin Marshall during the band’s recent shows in Greece.
Commented Gus: “We wanted to do a different video this time, instead of the usual indoor studio shootings. So we figured we’d show the band in its comfort zone — on stage. The clip was shot on our most recent shows in Greece this past January and you can witness the mayhem that goes down when we play in our home country! Enjoy!”
FIREWIND 2012 is:

FIREWIND debuted two brand new songs — “Wall Of Sound” and “Losing My Mind” — during its headlining concert on January 14 at the Fuzz Club in Athens, Greece.
FIREWIND has already announced a few summer festival appearances (including Summer Breeze in Germany and Czech Republic’s Masters Of Rock) and will play three shows in China and Taiwan at the end of August. The band will also embark on a European headlining tour in September/October with support from LEAVES’ EYES.
