Denmark’s melodic metal saviours APHYXION are set to release their third album, Void, on May 10th with Prime Collective! On this record, APHYXION have pushed and perfected their sound even further with songs that will warm the neck muscles, make you loose your voice and press replay again and again. Void presents a more contemporary and alternative songwriting taking big chances by stepping even further away from their death metal heritage. But one of the biggest changes to the sound on Void is the discovery of Jais’ vocal chords. Jonas Haagensen, songwriter and guitarist explains:
“We’ve known each other since our early teens. And even though we’ve been hanging out almost every day, people so close to you can still surprise you. We had no clue Jais could sing. It’s really crazy. Putting that into the APHYXION mix has given us a new dimension which we are eager to explore more. I really think that he not only nailed it vocal wise, he also did some really great work on the choruses when it comes to structure and catchiness.”
As APHYXION has evolved away from the death metal sound and more over to a metalcore vibe with death metal growls, the focus on the lyrics has shifted as well. Void is the most personal album APHYXION has ever written. Michael Vahl who writes all the lyrics has been through a rough period, and it’s materialized in these 11 songs that encompass Void.
“Most of the lyrics are literally just diary entries from a very dark period of my life.“ Vahl explains. “Right after the release of the Aftermath-album, I would stay in my room for days with no sleep or contact with anyone, and during that time all of the lyrics were written. It’s a very honest and vunerable thing to release Void, but it was necessary. That being said I feel stronger than ever, and really excited to let this beast out in to the world.”
Today the band is sharing with us a brand new video to the song ‘Fork Tongued’! Just exclusively premiered with New Noise and Metal.de, you can now watch the band’s blistering, new video here:
Void was produced by Jonas Haagensen and mixed & mastered by Jacob Hansen (Dizzy, Volbeat, Amaranthe). APHYXION is a renowned live act, supporting heavy weights such as Metallica, Soilwork, Soulfly and being nominated for several awards for their previous releases including Gaffa Awards and Danish Rock Awards.

For The Metal Voice former Anthrax singer Neil Turbin sits down with Jon Mikl Thor in Los Angeles on April 26 2019 at the launch of his new album Hammer of Justice and release of his new DVD Documentary Return of the Thunderhawk. Thor talks about how he learnt to do his feats of strengths, His meeting with Jimmy Page in London in the 80’s.
Watch the Interview here:
When asked about his new album and new DVD Documentary
“Return of the Thunder Hawk is coming out on DVD April 26 and it will be a complement to the new album ‘Hammer of Justice’. This is gonna be a package you buy the CD you get a DVD, plus there’s going to be screenings across North America of the documentary and also in Europe and the festivals. The musical direction will be power metal with sing-along choruses like when you’re in the arena and you want everybody to sing with you, like the Vikings would do it back in the day when they were going into battle. The new album musical style will have lots of heavy rifts I think when you hear the songs on Hammer of Justice you’ll say there are incredible powerful metal riffs that will hit you right in the face. ”
When asked about his meeting and playing to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin
“We signed to Doug Smith on a management deal as he was blown away by our show in New York in the 1983. Doug Smith also managed Motorhead, Gilrschool and Tank. Smith said to us he can break us in England during the release of the Thor album Unchained .Early 1984 we played the Marquee Club in London and Jimmy Page was in the audience and he said to me afterwards, very good Jon. I think he was a little plastered at the time when I met him cause during the after party and I saw him sleeping, with his head on the table.”
When asked about his time competing with Arnold Schwarzenegger
“Before music I was exposed to the bodybuilding scene, I used to come down to the US from Canada in the 1970’s to train at Gold’s gym on Venice beach and Arnold Schwarzenegger used to train at the same time. I’ll tell you a story I was 18 at a competition and I see a big crowd back stage and Arnold is posing and I look closer and Arnold is getting sucked off by one of the contestants ( Miss World) and Joe Weider says to him , what are you doing Arnold and Arnold said I’m pumping up.”

On May 24th, NYC’s TANITH will release their debut full-length, In Another Time, via Metal Blade Records. Taking their name from a character in the classic Hammer Horror The Devil Rides Out, Tanith play vintage hard rock that harks back to the glory days of Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy and Uriah Heep. However, while such influences resonate through their music, they are never derivative, having a strong musical identity and forging their own sound.
For a preview of In Another Time, the new single, “Under the Stars”, can be heard here:
To hear the album track “Citadel” (which also appeared on Tanith‘s Citadel 7″, released last year), please visit: metalblade.com/tanith – where the record can be pre-ordered.
The origin of Tanith lies in Cindy Maynard (Bass, Vocals) and Satan‘s Russ Tippins (Guitars, Vocals) playing covers in clubs and pubs in Tippins’ native UK, but it soon became obvious that they wanted to create content of their own, and form a full band. Deciding to locate the act in New York, they recruited close friend Charles Newton on guitar and drummer Keith Robinson to realize this. “Let me just say upfront that this is no solo project, but a four-piece band where each member has an equal say,” Tippins says. “If I even wanted to call the shots these guys wouldn’t let me! Collectively, we have a dynamic that really works. Not only are we friends who hang out as a matter of course, but musically the pieces all fit to make a picture. It’s a rare thing and I appreciate it more than most, having played in so many bands previously.” The manner in which the four musicians combine is indeed a special thing, and every contribution is essential. “Russ brings most of the substance, spirit and lyrics to the band,” Maynard enthuses. “He’s a visionary, so easy to work with creatively, and just loves getting together and playing with his friends. Charlie is a natural complement to Russ on the guitar, I would say technically and creatively, and he has a way of explaining things with a clarity that makes technically tricky things somehow simpler to execute. Then we have Keith, who is a great, flexible and tasteful drummer, and his grounded nature and playing really anchors everything we do.” Tippins likewise enthuses about Maynard’s contributions, heralding her as “an inspirational person who leads by example in every way. There is no one else I’d rather have beside me on stage, while off stage she is an orchestrator with the vision to keep things on point.“
A home demo of the song “Citadel” – made by just Maynard and Tippins – marked the official birth of the band, and the subsequent 7″ recorded with the whole unit demonstrated what happens when the four of them work together. Selling out of physical copies of the two-track 7″ in ten weeks, the songs continue to sell on Bandcamp and have been purchased by fans in Thailand, Russia, Greece, Japan, Australia and numerous other territories – the band feeding on the enthusiasm garnered from around the world. Now, they’re following it up with their debut full-length, In Another Time, which Maynard aptly describes as, “great riffs, lots of melody, interwoven parts, and twin fucking guitars! I think the record is refreshingly different from so many other records being put out now, and the analog warmth of the recording definitely adds to the feel and experience.” Lyrically, they eschew the angry, cocksure, nihilistic, or occult-based subjects common to a vast amount of contemporary rock and metal bands, and instead come from a more positive place – Tippins asserting, “With Tanith we wanted to offer more of a message of hope, and an escape to the realms of fantasy. Broadly speaking, it’s optimism over pessimism.” All the tracking of the record was handled at Excello Studios in Brooklyn, NY, and owner Hugh Pool engineered and mixed the entire collection. “The analog equipment we tracked with affected not only the mood but also the creative process. Real analog equipment from the 60s and 70s has a distinct sound, feel and even smell,” says Newton – and this only adds to the organic, old school feel of the record.
