Tomorrow, on October 27, Norwegian artist Chris Wicked releases his interpretation of “Mother”. The restrained, hypnotic rendition completes a series of cover releases ahead of his forthcoming EP, “Black Horns & Black Hooves”.
Having put his own stamp on “Wicked Game” (Chris Isaak), “Utan Dina Andetag” (Kent) and “Enjoy the Silence” (Depeche Mode), the Bergen-based artist now turns to Danzig. “Mother” is the final cover in a series that has allowed Chris to explore songs with personal significance through his own musical approach.
— “Mother” is a song I listened to a lot growing up, and I’ve always loved it. The original is such a rock song, so I wanted to strip it back and do something very different — something more atmospheric and hypnotic, says Chris Wicked.
All four covers will feature on the forthcoming EP “Black Horns & Black Hooves”, alongside original material. The release also marks a shift towards a stronger focus on his own songwriting. Recording for his next album is already underway.
“Mother”was recorded with long time members Eskil Sæter and Marius Mathisen.
The single is accompanied by a black-and-white music video featuring Chris at the microphone in the studio, with brief appearances by Eskil and Marius. Its understated visual approach keeps the focus on the performance.

The release follows an intense period for the artist, who recently concluded the 20th anniversary celebration of Malice In Wonderland with the acclaimed single “Dying Breed.” In recent years, Chris Wicked has embraced an increasingly darker and more cinematic sound, drawing inspiration from artists such as Paradise Lost, The Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode.
