BLACK SABBATH guitar legend Tony Iommi was in Birmingham UK yesterday (Wednesday 26th August), helping Macmillan Cancer Support highlight the loneliness of cancer. BBC.co.uk reported that Tony, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 – spent a few minutes inside the “isolation box” much to the delight of nearby shoppers.
MacMillan Cancer Support was behind the exercise, which was carried out in the city’s Bullring shopping centre.
“I was in a bubble for a while – just like the isolation box,” said Iommi.
The chamber is made from two-way mirrors that stop the inhabitant seeing out but allow other people to look in.
Those inside the box can hear recordings of personal stories from cancer survivors.
The Birmingham-born musician, who was diagnosed with stage three lymphoma, said the box went some way to conveying the isolation he and many other cancer sufferers felt.
“When I was diagnosed I was absolutely devastated,” he said.
“They’re talking to me saying ‘you’ve got stage three’ and it’s going in my head and I just felt somewhere else.
“And it was only later when I really broke down, I thought that’s it, it’s the end. And you really think that.
“But it’s not. There are people who can help.”
Iommi has undergone surgery and chemotherapy and said he was feeling well and looking forward to jetting off to Los Angeles to work.

Progressive art rock band WITH OUR ARMS TO THE SUN is the second act to sign with the new-launched Fade to Silence Records.
With Our Arms to the Sun is a breath of fresh air in a musical landscape dominated by pop formatted bands. The Arizona desert-based foursome crafts a brand of cinematic conceptual music that aims to evoke emotion and inspire thought in listeners. The band’s free-flowing style is not easily pigeon- holed, appealing to fans of not just one genre, but to people in general who appreciate music as expression.
“My son and I went to see John 5 perform in East Texas and as luck would have it, With Our Arms to the Sun were the supporting artist,” said Fade to Silence founder Paul Bibeau. “Upon taking the stage, the band took complete control of the room and I was locked into every second of their performance.
To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. It felt has though the band was playing the very last concert ever and wanted to put it all on the table. Their performance was thoroughly pleasing, cinematic in scope coupled with an intense, passionate delivery. I got sucked into each note, each composition and I loved they journey they took me on. I spent a few minutes with them afterwards and we began to talk more and more. I knew immediately, this is my cup of tea.”
With Our Arms to the Sun’s first release through Fade to Silence will be a reissue of the band’s self- released “A Far Away Wonder” EP on CD and vinyl.
“We were anti-label for the longest time and did everything DIY,” said With Our Arms to the Sun vocalist/guitarist Josh Breckenridge. “We recorded and distributed all of our own albums, and even made our own merch. One of the reasons we were not interested in being on a label was that we wanted to retain our sound. We are not interested in changing who we are artistically just to be more ‘marketable’ or ‘commercial.’ There are plenty of bands pounding that drum and we want to do something different. Paul immediately understood what we were going for as a band and rather than be a typical industry person, he encouraged our growth towards being a conceptual band. Also the chance at being one of the flagship bands on a new label that has a creative philosophy really appealed to us as artists.”
With Our Arms to the Sun – which is completed by Joseph Leary, Joseph Breckenridge Jr. and John Mclucas – has three self-released recordings to their credit. The Fade to Silence re-release of “A Far Away Wonder” will come later this year. With Our Arms To The Sun is managed by Alan Jones/Slant Business Management and booked by Andrew Goodfriend/TKO.

The launch of Fade to Silence Records was announced earlier this month by former Spitfire Records company founder/president and industry veteran Paul Bibeau. The new label, which is distributed via AMPed Distribution worldwide, will focus on establishing a cutting and creative edge driven label brand, a catalog/visual/television imprint and publishing division highlighting the hard rock and heavy metal genre’s broad musical spectrum.
IRON MAIDEN have unveiled their new ‘Ed Force One’! The Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet is almost twice the size and over three times the weight of the Boeing 757 used on previous tours, according to skullsnbones.com. Take a look at it’s size below:
As the press release states on IronMaiden.com, “The new Ed Force One will take the band, crew and over 12 tons of equipment more than 55,000 miles (88,500km) around the planet with concerts in six of the seven continents (Australasia, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Europe) with The Book of Souls World Tour 2016 expected to visit around 35 countries. The Book Of Souls World Tour will open in the U.S.A in late February with Ed Force One flying in for three shows before, in early March, heading into Central America visiting MEXICO, followed by a much anticipated first ever concert in EL SALVADOR and a return to COSTA RICA. Ed Force One then proceeds into South America for concerts in ARGENTINA, CHILE and a number of shows in BRAZIL before flying back to the USA at the end of March for ten more cities covering the USA and, of course, CANADA in the first two weeks of April. A long awaited return to JAPAN follows later in April, and then the band are delighted to be playing their first ever shows in CHINA before heading to NEW ZEALAND and AUSTRALIA for a comprehensive tour during the first half of May. Shows in SOUTH AFRICA, Maiden’s first visit there with Bruce, will be the last port of call before Ed Force One heads to EUROPE for a very extensive tour starting in late May and finishing in early August. This will the first time Ed Force One has ever been used on any European Tour dates (other than Bruce’s Fan Club trips to shows) and will provide transport there for at least for the first few weeks.”
Here’s what Bruce said on the new plane and tour: “When the opportunity arose from my friends at Air Atlanta Icelandic to lease a 747 for The Book of Souls World Tour, of course we jumped at the chance, who wouldn’t? The greatest benefit of travelling in a 747 is that because of its colossal size and freight capacity we can carry our stage production and all our stage equipment and desks in the cargo hold without having to make any of the immense structural modifications needed to do this on the previous 757, the extent of which fans will have noted on the Flight 666 DVD. Although in reality we cannot carry much more gear the savings in complexity, time and cost make using the 747 even more practical. All we will need to do is “paint” it and move a few seats around, with the added advantage that there is much more room for band and crew – our Krew can almost get a row of seats each to catch up on sleep on the flights! Furthermore, it is marginally faster o.85 MACH and the range of around 7000NM (13,000 km) is much greater which means we will not have to make the refuelling stops we needed to with the 757. However, even though we have worked out the logistics of taking a plane of that immense size out on tour, I still have to learn to fly it before we can go anywhere! So, I’m currently doing my training to qualify as a pilot and Captain on a Boeing 747. I’m doing this at Cardiff Aviation, my aircraft maintenance facility in Wales, where we recently took possession of a rather splendid 747 simulator which I can’t wait to get practising on! We’re all really excited at the thought of bringing our brand new tour to fans who have never seen us play live before, and of course re-visiting all our old friends again too. You can rest assured we are all working hard to put together a spectacular show for our fans.”

Today marks the eighth anniversary of the death of Sophie Lancaster, killed for dressing in her own unique way, daring to look ‘different.’ Since Sophie‘s death, her mother Sylvia has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of prejudice against subcultures through campaigning and charity work with The Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Today Sylvia has been praised by the Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd for her efforts to combat hate crime. Read more at this location.
The official Sophie Lancaster Foundation Facebook page have stated: “RIP Sophie. . 8 years on your legacy is changing lives. X“
This is the description of the Foundation in their own words:
“Since Sophie’s death on August 24th 2007, following the horrific attack on her and her partner Rob in Stubbeylee Park, Bacup, Lancashire, we have had lots of kind offers of support and donations. Sophie and Rob dressed in their unique way, expressing their individuality as creative artistic people.
After consulting family and friends, we felt that a charity should be set up in Sophie’s name. The charity, known as The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, will focus on creating respect for and understanding of subcultures in our communities.
It will also work in conjunction with politicians and police forces to ensure individuals who a part of subcultures are protected by the law.”
The Foundation became a registered charity in 2009 (number 1129689). The following are their aims:
To create a lasting legacy to Sophie.
To provide educational group-works that will challenge the prejudice and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures.
To campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from alternative subcultures or Lifestyle and Dress.
“So far, to meet these aims and objectives we have promoted the Foundation nationally and internationally, ensuring Sophie is recognised in the media and elsewhere. This has involved Sylvia Lancaster being interviewed many times for TV and Newspapers and many magazines have included features on Sophie’s death and the work of Sylvia in setting up the Foundation. Including a “Tonight With Trevor McDonald” special.
The partnership with Illamasqua and Propaganda has proved invaluable and The Foundation is proud to work with them. Their profile in the beauty and business world has carried the work of the Foundation into new areas and brought new supporters and collaborators to join us.
