Released on 4th May via the Noisy Records label, the story of “Starless Starlight” is that of a short melody composed by David Cross and Robert Fripp that emerged as one of the key themes of the KING CRIMSON song ‘Starless’, from the 1974 album “Red”.
The tune resurfaced in two improvisations performed and recorded by Fripp at Blueberry Hill, St Louis in 2006. These recordings and the theme itself were than transformed by David Cross into the album “Starless Starlight”.
Robert Fripp’s approach to the guitar and soundscaping is both human and symphonic and is complemented by the range and uniquely warm sound of Cross’s electric violin. Improvisation remains central to Cross’s toolkit, with loops and samples of Fripp’s guitar providing a sense of metre – occasionally rhythmic but mostly cascading through the tracks like waves on the shore.
Cross’s technique of ‘back composing’ from recorded improvisations enables a hybrid music with the best features of the ephemeral and the permanent. David Cross describes this process, “It’s a kind of time travel, listening backwards to where the music came from and exploring forwards to find out where it might lead.”
The final stage was achieved when producer Tony Lowe brought an important third ear to the process, working with Cross to shape and focus the music into a coherent album.
‘Starless Starlight Loops’ is the first track of the album and the radio edit opens with the Starless theme.

Metalbox Recordings have announced the release of I.C.O.N’s new album, which will be entitled “The Blacklist”.
“The Blacklist” is the long-awaited second album by British metal band I.C.O.N and sees the band deliver a more aggressive, comprehensive representation of what they are about. Years of travelling the length and breadth of the UK have finally culminated in a stable line-up that shares a common vision, as this new album will testify. Metal Shock Finland‘s Larry Paterson is on drums.
Following on from their triumphant return to the Metal scene in 2014 – London’s SikTh have decided to answer the calls from their fans and record new music in 2015.
“We’ve always maintained that more music would emerge one day and for the first time in years it feels like now is the time” says guitarist Dan Weller.
“We had an amazing time travelling round the World last year. Having a chance to reconnect with our fans was very special for us“.
The as yet untitled EP will be the follow up to the 2006 critically acclaimed album “Death Of A Dead Day” and will see the band enter the studio for the first time in 10 years.
Mikee W Goodman adds ” We did not realise our music had spread so far! I believe we have amongst the most passionate and energetic fans in the World. I am honoured to play to them.”
“But what we have been asked most is about new music. My desire to make new SikTh music is as strong as it’s ever been. I can’t wait to get started!”
Recording starts this summer with a November release date penned, it will also be the first time SikTh will make a record without the assistance of a record label.
“Since we have such a good relationship with our fans we decided that funding the E.P via a PledgeMusic campaign was the best option for us and them. We could have signed a deal but it just adds so many complications for a band like us” adds Weller.
In support of the new EP SikTh will also be returning to the stage in December with a string of headline dates in the UK.

MOTÖRHEAD were forced to cancel an appearance in Brazil after frontman Lemmy took ill, according to classicrock.com.
The singer/bass player had to pull out of Saturday’s scheduled appearance at Monsters Of Rock in Arena Anhembi, Sao Paulo, as he was struck down with stomach problems and dehydration.
Lemmy is undergoing tests in hospital and MOTÖRHEAD ‘s slot was filled by a jam session involving guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee along with guests including Andreas Kisser and Derrick Green of SEPULTURA.
In a statement, festival organisers say: “Monsters Of Rock regrets to inform the public that Motorhead will not be able to carry out the performance scheduled for tonight.
“The lead singer Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister, this morning suffered a serious gastric disorder, followed by dehydration. Lemmy has already had tests and been initially medicated, but on medical orders is unable to be present.”
Lemmy spent much of 2013 recuperating from a series of health setbacks which included several weeks in hospital after he suffered internal bleeding. He’d earlier been fitted with a defibrillator to deal with heart problems.
In October 2014, he revealed how he was “close to death” during his last round of surgery. The health worries forced him to clean up his lifestyle.
Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne are also on the bill for Monsters Of Rock.
MOTÖRHEAD are scheduled to play in Curitiba, Brazil, on Tuesday (April 28) and in Porto Alegre, also in Brazil, on Thursday (April 30). It is not yet clear whether Lemmy will be fit for the shows.
