American rock bassist and musician, Craig Gruber, best known as the original bassist in RAINBOW has passed away, when he was only 64 years old.
Craig was one of those legends who started his career in music in the golden age of rock music ’70’s. He joined ELF, consisting of vocalist Ronnie James Dio, they released 3 albums before Craig joined Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. He released 8 studio albums with bands and artists such as ELF, RAINBOW, OZZ, Gary Moore and THE RODS.
Do you know bands such as Hounds, Styx, Hydra, Nazareth and TKO? If so, you are probably an old school metal-head who has knowledge, but if not, there is lots of information around and stories to be learned about your favourite genre of music and its history and today we know how precious that knowledge is. Those bands I mentioned before are just a short list of many who are now forgotten. Maybe some of you even have some records, cassettes or CD’s by these bands in your cupboards, covered in dust and you completely forgot.
There are several ways to find out and study about rock and metal music history and stories; You can search on the internet, ask friends or search magazines, which is a long process. Or, you can simply seek the information in Martin Popoff ‘s ‘Ye Olde Metal’ book series, where he reviewed many albums and interviewed those artists from the ancient era of those genres of music.
During the second part of our chat I, Mohsen Fayyazi and Martin Popoff spent time discussing Martin’s ‘Ye Olde Metal’ book series. To me, the title of this book series is kind of unfamiliar, so we started to discuss the name, “Basically to give the clue that we are talking about really old forgotten stuff that not a lot of people know about it, or care about it,” Martin said, then he continued “I think that is one of the main reasons I wanted to write it. No one’s ever put the bands Rex or Hounds in book form before, so I thought it would be cool.”
We carried on talking and we arrived at his interview with Status Quo’s Francis Rossi. Martin told me he was a huge fan of the band, “Those guys always put a smile on my face.” He then mentioned that he had three or more chats with them on the phone, he also described Francis as a really good, energetic and funny guy, who talks fast. Martin told me that anytime he had a chance to talk with him, he tried to ask another question about their old material, especially about the “Quo” album.
I must say that I found Martin a cool, honest and chatty man and I believe that’s why all of the artists he contacted were happy to co-operate with him, which makes his books a treasure chest of knowledge. So if you are hungry to know more about rock and metal music, you should start reading Martin Popoff’s books. In the meantime, if you would like to listen to our chat, you can simply do it by clicking on the ‘Play’ button on the audio player below.
Hi, I am Mohsen Fayazi, Chief Editor of Metal Shock Finland. As you may know we truly love Heavy Metal Music at our tiny but magical home, Metal Shock Finland. But love is just like other verbs in words and actions in the real world and I believe it means nothing when it is not demonstrated by some particular behaviour, it needs appreciation, remembering, sacrifice…etc. To appreciate our beloved ones, we pay tribute to the people who helped and improved this amazing industry of true forthright music.
Martin Popoff is a Canadian rocker and metalhead, well-known from writing thousands of articles and more than 40 books, all about rock and metal music. To know Martin and his work I recently conducted a series of interviews with him and now you can check out the first part here on Metal Shock Finland. These interviews are a part of tribute week to Martin Popoff.
I knew that Martin was working on new book, so I used this to begin our chat. However, we talked about it later too as you will see in the other parts of this series. I like chatty people and I love to encourage my guests to talk about their likes and what they think is important as a whole and with Martin, it was not difficult at all. “I am working on a book called ‘Who Invented Heavy Metal’ and it’s a very big book, it’s coming in at about a hundred and twenty thousands words,” stated Martin Popoff on his newest book. “I am doing it in my timeline with quotes format that I have done with the ‘Hair Metal Coffee Table’ book and I also use that format for books on Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden.” Then Martin told me that it was a kind of battle between Black Sabbath and Deep Purple to be the right answer to the question. I have found it interesting.
We previously agreed on Facebook to begin this series of interviews about Martin’s Collector’s Guide book series. Martin told me the story about his first book, ‘Riff Kills Man!: 25 Years Of Recorded Hard Rock and Heavy Metal’ in 1993, the days before the reign of the internet. He reviewed all the heavy metal albums which he could have done in those days, but in 1997 he came back to that book, extended it and added many more reviews, then published it under the name ‘The Collector’s Guide To Heavy Metal’. Later, in the internet age, when Martin found that he could access more and even older albums, he decided to categorise the albums in different decades, which I believe was a good and reasonable decision. But I was curious to hear his opinion on which of those decades was the best. “For heavy metal music, the way we know it, I think the golden period really was the ’80’s” Martin answered me. “When we had the NWOBHM, the birth of Thrash, Hair Metal and almost every band from the ’70’s was still participating in the ’80’s and making pretty good albums.”
Collector’s Guide Publishing seemed to serve Martin well, “Those guys were great, It was a blast working with them.” Martin commented on working with them and he continues about his experience – “Those are tricky hard layout jobs, there’s hundred of thousands of words there, they were great and I am still buddies with them. Rob Godwin over there is a legend, he’s done so many cool things in his life and he is such a deep music fan himself. Those books sold really well, they were good at their job. I am happy with what they did.”
We also talked about the designing matters of his books, metal in the ’70’s, ’90’s, the damage that Grunge did to heavy metal and many things more. So if you are interested to hear them all just click on the ‘Play’ button below and enjoy.
There are some people who are Creators, Pioneers, Leaders, Heroes or even Destroyers and they are busy making their own stories. But also there are some other people who write those stories, visible or invisible and memories will not remain without their magical work!
Martin Popoff, a star from the Universe of Words, is a Canadian heavy metal music observer and history writer, who has spent two decades of his life carving the amazing history of this genre of music on the human mind. More than 40 published books on hard rock and heavy metal music is just one part of thousands of articles Martin has penned. Maybe we should mention here that Martin has been called “heavy metal’s most widely recognized journalist” by his publisher.
Today, Metal Shock Finland is proud to pay a week’s tribute to Martin Popoff and his precious work on the heavy metal industry – maybe we can show our gratitude to him and all the stars from the Universe of Words. Our Chief Editor had a four piece interview with Martin, where he tried to visualize the world of metal from Martin‘s view, along with discovering more about his career and life. “He is truly a nice and cool person.” Mohsen Fayazi commented on his time talking with Mr. Popoff “I never felt tired of listening to his stories and opinions.” He continues on Martin‘s style of writing: “The special fact about Martin’s style of recording history is that he does not only observe the big stars, but also the rare stories about unseen or forgotten bands and musicians, which makes his work unique.”
Metal Shock Finland will publish these interviews and more during the upcoming days and will celebrate Martin Popoff’s 52nd Birthday with you and all of his fans and followers.

In anticipation of their forthcoming studio album “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” – out on March 27th (EU), 30th (UK) and 31st (US) – Finland-based symphonic metal masters NIGHTWISH now reveal the album opener ‘Shudder Before The Beautiful’ as the second track after the recently unveiled first singe ‘Élan’.
‘Shudder Before The Beautiful’ is premiered today at Finland’s biggest newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
Tuomas Holopainen comments: “We wanted to present our upcoming album`s opening track “Shudder Before The Beautiful” for everyone to listen to before the album`s release in cooperation with the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. Bringing together the most trustworthy Finnish media with a song about universal awe was a match made in heaven in its uniqueness. The core of “Shudder Before The Beautiful” lies in moments such as gazing at The Milky Way on a cold winter`s night, seeing a photo of our Planet Earth, “a pale blue dot” taken by Voyager 1 as a tiny oasis in the unfathomable vastness of space, or when listening to music which momentarily takes away all woe and time.
And sharing those moments with people you love.”
The track list for “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” reads as follows:
Shudder Before The Beautiful
Weak Fantasy
Élan
Yours Is An Empty Hope
Our Decades In the Sun
My Walden
Endless Forms Most Beautiful
Edema Ruh
Alpenglow
The Eyes Of Sharbat Gula
The Greatest Show On Earth
“Endless Forms Most Beautiful” will be the first NIGHTWISH studio album to feature Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen. Longtime drummer Jukka Nevalainen wasn’t able to take part in the recording sessions due to health issues but Kai Hahto (WINTERSUN) kindly stepped in and looked after the drumming duties for him.
NIGHTWISH also revealed the famed evolutionary biologist and writer Professor RichardDawkins as a guest on this eighth studio album. The detailed cover-artwork was created by longtime collaborator Toxic Angel.
