A few months ago, the Finnish rock band Darkness Is My Canvas was announced as a new addition to the Rockshots Records roster with the release of the first single from their upcoming album called “The End of Times” which is scheduled to debut in October 2024. Today, they are excited to unveil their newest single “Bleed”.
Darkness Is My Canvas seamlessly blends elements of rock with modern prog sounds, offering at the same time a melodious, immersive, and lively musical experience.
Drawing inspiration from the complexities of everyday life, Darkness Is My Canvas infuses their music with themes of resilience, introspection and hope.
Musically, “Bleed” embodies the classic Darkness Is My Canvas sound, traversing from enchanting melodies to surprising rhythmic complexities. Melodic guitar passages by Panu lead the listener toward anthemic choruses, while robust drumming provides a sturdy foundation for the song’s narrative, brought to life by Pete’s impassioned vocals.
“Originally featured on Darkness Is My Canvas’ debut EP, “Monsters,” in 2022, “Bleed” quickly ascended to become a staple in our live performances. However, as we embarked on the recording journey for our upcoming album, “The End Of Times,” slated for release in October 2024, it became evident that “Bleed” justified a new perspective. With detail oriented re-recording, the song gained new life during this process, and now it sounds like what we originally envisioned. We added more grit to almost every part of it, re-vamped guitars, bass and drums. We created the soundscape more on the par with other songs to be released from the album”. adds the band.
“Bleed” is a song filled with beautiful guitar melodies and airy synthesizers. The chorus is epically melodic and easy to sing along to. Then, in the middle of the track, it ventures into some really bizarre musical territories – some might even find references to Radiohead’s Kid A album… Before it returns to a stadium-sized chorus as if nothing weird happened. The biggest differences in the remake are in the vocal harmonies towards the end of the song where there’s also a subtle nod towards Def Leppard. The theme of the song is self-harm, based on experiences within the band’s close circle.
The Video of the song was created with super-talented Anita Emphis who is the master-mind behind the “Bleed” video.
For those who appreciate bands like Muse, Ghost, and My Chemical Romance, prepare to rock out with Darkness Is My Canvas!

“We found ourselves writing really depressing, melancholy songs about how just disappointed we were with all the work we put into Curse of Autumn and then going through the pandemic,” says frontman/songwriter Joseph Michael about the record. “Before that, we thought nothing was going to stop us. Then, something did. We felt a bit defeated. So, that’s how Sounds Of The Forgotten started. But we got out of that quickly. The songs we ended up writing were empowering. We have songs with negative emotions, but the overarching theme is moving forward and perseverance. That’s the epitome of Sounds Of The Forgotten.”
Many factors influenced and inspired Witherfall’s approach to “Sounds Of The Forgotten”. The album color theme conveys another side to Witherfall’s fourth-album distress. Often associated with ambition, power, and regality, the Blake Armstrong (In Flames, Megadeth, Kataklysm, Harry Potter, Wednesday) cover art provides a view into and a visual counter to the music on “Sounds Of The Forgotten”.

Witherfall was formed in Los Angeles in 2013. Joseph Michael (also of Sanctuary fame) and Jake Dreyer (ex-Iced Earth/Demons & Wizards) built their new band around drummer Adam Sagan (RIP) and accomplished bassist Anthony Crawford (Allan Holdsworth, CHON). Since then, the group have released three highly regarded albums: Nocturnes and Requiems (2017), A Prelude to Sorrow (2018), and Curse of Autumn (2021) and an ep Vintage (2019). Not one to cut corners, Witherfall enlisted famed drummer Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson) on Curse of Autumn, ensuring the foundations of singles “As I Lie Awake,” “The Other Side of Fear,” and “The River” were second to none. On the upcoming album, Minnemann returns to the fold with an album-only appearance, while drummer Chris Tsaganeas (Wax Owls) and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Hirschfeld (Willie Nelson) Witherfall’s newest permanent members.
Every Witherfall album is a defining moment. From the moment Nocturnes and Requiems thundered across metaldom to the group’s wine endeavors (Tempest Red Blend) with Charlie & Echo Winery, their video collaboration with Cig Neutron (Devil’s Workshop) on “The Other Side of Fear,” a beer partnership with Adroit Theory Brewing Company (Shadows Black IPA), and custom Funko Pop set, Michael and Dreyer have made Witherfall their mission. The journey to this point hasn’t been without toil and upheaval. Determination, however, is the key.
Witherfall are guitarist/songwriter Jake Dreyer, vocalist/songwriter Joseph Michael, bassist Anthony Crawford, drummer Marco Minnemann (recording only), drummer/percussionist Chris Tsaganeas, and keyboardist Gerry Hirschfeld.

Singer, musician, activist and cultural icon Mari Boine has unveiled her new single “Mu eadni”. The track is taken from Mari’s full-length ‘Alva’, scheduled for release on the 6th of September 2024 via By Norse Music. The arrival of ‘Alva’ is greatly anticipated, as it marks the first new album of Mari Boine with her band in many years!
Mari comments about the new single: “Mu eadni / Mother of Mine is a song of love and lament for the woman who gave me life, and for all women who suffer under systems that shame and subordinate them. As a Laestadian Christian, my eadni was bound by strict gender roles, and that insidious association of the feminine with sin. She was taught to be self-denying: that her highest purpose as a woman was obedience. (To males, naturally, all the way down.)
When her daughters resisted, she felt it was a personal failure. And yet, she was Sámi, with echoes and stirrings from a much older worldview, one that celebrated the feminine, that found purpose in reciprocity, not hierarchies. Sometimes, I feel her with us, free from shame, sharing our freedom. Smoothing our fringe. Adjusting our belts. Asking us to twirl.”

Singer, musician, activist, and cultural icon Mari Boine has long used her voice, musical or otherwise, to further her advocacy for the preservation of Sámi culture and identity.
From her exploratory debut Jaskatvuođa maŋŋá (After the Silence) in 1985, to the acclaimed and notable Norwegian-Grammy award winning Gula Gula (Hear the Voices of the Foremothers) in 1989, right up to the release of last year’s Amame with jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, Mari Boine has consistently and proudly presented facets of Sámi life to her listeners. Now, with the release of Alva in September 2024, Mari aims to re-contextualise her activism for the wider Sámi community within the personal struggles she has faced on her way to becoming the resilient figure we see today.
On this album, Mari steps back towards her own roots, with songs like “Anárjoh’gáttis” (By My Beautiful River) offering glimpses into a childhood which she abandoned when she chose to leave behind a strict religious upbringing in order to pursue a life of activism and music. The poignancy of the record reaches an emotional high on the mournful “Mu eadni” (Mother of Mine), wherein Mari laments her own relationship with her mother. She is also found reflective on “Oainnestan” (Glimpses) when looking at the relationship she has with her son.
On Alva, Mari Boineseeks to find balance between a combination of difficult personal life circumstances, close relationships and her lifelong professional journey acknowledging her people and the many challenges indigenous people face. As she grew older and abandoned a complicated childhood, she also began to understand her true purpose and embarked on a prevailing, sometimes lonely mission of utmost importance – a mission to share the beautiful culture and histories of the Sámi people through music to people across the world.
Like so many people impacted by colonisation which we see throughout the world today and throughout history, the Sámi people (separated by Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia) have been oppressed and deprived of their distinct indigenous culture and language since the 17th century. Mari’s music aims to convey a sense of oppression and frustration, anger and sorrow, which stems from this history. On Alva specifically, a Northern Sámi word which translates to energy, stamina or willpower, Mari’s compelling use of traditional joik singing bores through layers of history, encouraging the Sámi young people to;
Bring out, breathe out the stories that ask to be told With your light feet trespass the border of time
«Dánsso fal, mu vàhkaran» / «Keep on Dancing, Váhkaran»
There’s an emancipated energy that is also reflected in the music, soaring to new heights over vast imagined landscapes of the tundra of Sápmi / Northern Norway. Mari Boine’s evocative musical language vocalises the inseparable bond between the Sámi people and the natural world. In comparison to her last albumAmame, which comprised a naked and fragile arrangement of vocals and piano, Alva reflects the “willpower” of its name and takes the listener on a musical journey of exhilarating momentum spurred along by a full band.
Mari Boine says that if she could “compose” her own life, she would have wanted to be who she is right now, only 40 years ago. “Right now I feel whole” she says. “As complete as I wanted to be in my whole life”.
Mari Boine has recently been introduced to a much larger audience through her appearance in the Norwegian reality TV show “Hver gang vi møtes” (“Every Time We Meet”), which invites artists of all genres to interpret each others’ music. Other artists on the show have expressed their deep respect for Mari Boine, and have commented how challenging her own music has been to interpret. About the experience she comments, “I have wiped away some tears,” says Boine about her participation in the TV show, but confirms that there was also a lot of laughter too.
