All My Life is the debut single off the highly anticipated sophomore album by NEVER ELECTED. It is one of the many turbulent tales that Never Elected sing about in their upcoming album, aptly titled Turbulent (released via Sliptrick Records on Dec 12th, 2023).
The song begins with a rhyme that the protagonist’s grandma sang to him regularly as a toddler, mocking his appearance, and ends with the ironic and poignant tagline of a profoundly dysfunctional family: ‘We are a Normal Family’. It is a brief passionate rant on the hypocrisy and self-serving agendas exhibited by both friends and family.
Thank god that Christian Death will never die. Their debut album is still held up as the Holy Grail of death rock, though their doomy riffs and sinisterly slow synths have made them the rotten apple of every goth’s made-up eye. Heck, name another band that could ride “Sex and Drugs and Jesus Christ” to the top of MTV, VH1 and the UK charts.
These legendary ghouls aren’t done giving the world a good scare, either. While the lineup has changed, last year, they released “Evil Becomes Rule”, their 17th studio album, which Ghost Cult considered a “source of much dark enjoyment”. This month, they’re playing a string of shows up and down the West Coast, including three dates in their home state of California.

Formed in 2007, Hyrgal is an Extreme Metal band from France. Their name comes from nordic mythology and is the contraction of two runes, Tyr (god of victory, fire and fair war) and Hagalaz (hail). After some demos and local concerts, Hyrgal released their first album ‘Serpentine’ in 2017 on Naturmacht Productions and shortly after started to work with Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions for all next releases: ‘Fin de Règne’ (2020), ‘Hyrgal’ (2022) and ‘Sessions Funéraires: Anno MMXXIII’ (2023).
Hyrgal is reputed for their complex music, deep lyrics and extreme vision of life. Blending Death metal, Black metal and Dark Ambient elements, Hyrgal continue their crusade against the intransigent world, like a portal to inner liberation.
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to Hollywood filmmaker Penelope Spheeris about her documentaries (The Decline of Western Civilization, part 1-3) and her feature films (Wayne’s World etc..) as well as her upcoming documentary that was shelved for 20 years ‘We Sold Our Soul For Rock and Roll’ OzzFest.
When asked about the infamous scene in The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years with Chris Holmes (W.A.S.P.) in the pool “I knew Chris before we did the movie obviously and I knew his mom and I asked her to come along because I got along with her and I liked her. Honestly when I was shooting that scene, I thought it was just no good, it didn’t work. And I took the cameraman behind a tree and I’m like dude we didn’t get it. We don’t have this scene. I asked Blackie (Lawless) if we could interview him and he didn’t want to do it cause he is too cool or something. I then went to the financier and said after the whole thing was over with I said can we re-shoot that scene cause it didn’t work. It is the scene in Decline 2 that everybody remembers and thinks of first. So you never know? “
When asked about Chris Holmes ‘claim that he was not directly paid for his participation in Decline part 2 documentary “I feel bad that I think he feels that we didn’t pay him. There was a club called FM Station over in the valley and a little while after we did the film I heard someone yelling my name and I turned around and it’s Chris and he is going, “hey Penelope how come you didn’t pay me for doing your movie? ” And I said, “I did pay you, you were too drunk to remember you got the check. ” That was the first time I heard that I thought he did not get paid. The thing is the director doesn’t pay the people in the movie. The production manager or the producers pay them. And every time we filmed the producers or production managers walked over and handed them (participants) a check. We have to do that or it’s not legal to even be filming them. So we did pay him. I wasn’t there but they said they paid him. What I would like to do is straighten it all out and that would be to pay him, again. Cause I don’t want him to feel bad or think that I gypped him or say bad things cause he thinks I’m a bad person, I’m not. I would be happy to pay him $300 dollars again, no problem. I’ve done well in this business so I’ll give Chris Holmes $300 dollars. I just don’t want him to feel bad. I like Chris.”
In a past interviews with Chris Holmes on The Metal Voice Holmes stated, “She (Penelope Spheeris) still owes me 300 bucks, Penelope Spheeris paid 300 bucks but it went to management (W.A.S.P.) not me. The deal was she called me personally and she should have paid me personally, so she still owes me 300 bucks. She called me up wanting to do another interview for the box set that is coming out. I told her if you want to pay me my 300 bucks I’ll think about it.”
German heavy music ensemble MAVIS, featuring vocalist Phil Donay, guitarist Manu Weller, bass player Mo Amrein, and drummer Jakob Schulz-Klein, have announced their debut full-length record, Grief is no Ally, to be released 15th December via Arising Empire.
To celebrate the news, the band have released their new single ‘Calypso’, a track that showcases their exceptional talent in composing and narrative lyricism.
‘Calypso’ marks the band’s first creative endeavour since the exit of founding member and chief songwriter Robin Dachtler, offering a surreal odyssey that navigates the often essential transformations life imposes.
As the piece evolved, it increasingly symbolised the band’s own brush with disbandment.
“It felt as though MAVIS was doomed just as it began to flourish. Yet, we endured those challenging times, and akin to the song, we were drawn to a faint yet alluring glimmer of hope that pierced through the gloom. Clinging to that light, we now find ourselves more united and resilient than before,” reflects vocalist Phil. With its compelling narrative and emotive depth, ‘Calypso’ emerges as a powerful anthem sure to make an enduring impact.
The title of the record stands for 11 stories of different forms of grieving, ranging from the dark and negative sides to the positive and healthy aspects of embracing grief, letting go.
MAVIS planned the release of a full length in 2020 but were immediately struck with multiple setbacks in their young history. Not only did the beginning of the pandemic hit them right at the outset of their journey but so too did line-up changes due to illness, mental issues or members giving up on making music entirely. Just as they started playing again roughly eighteen months ago, their bad luck peaked with a studio fire in which they lost instruments, equipment and all merchandise. Right around that time, the two remaining members of MAVIS found a new drive, looking to complete their line-up once again. Since then the quartet have worked tirelessly on putting all their experiences into the songs that now make this jewel of a debut record. Going into the studio with a “nothing is holy”-attitude to produce the best music they can, their efforts paid off, finally, for everyone to hear.
