Chris Goss is one of the elusive geniuses of American music. As the singer, guitarist and driving force behind Masters Of Reality, he’s spent more than 40 years charting his own musical journey, travelling from mystical blues to desert rock to psychedelia-edged beauty via all points in between.
New song, “It All Comes Back To You” is a dreamy psychedelic rocker which is undeniably Masters of Reality; with its Karmic retribution ponderings, comes at a time when the personal perception of purpose has been twisted into a large mass of unrecognizable brainwashed self-portraits. “It was a touchy tightrope to walk. A laughable analysis trap. But saved by a simple resolve, I think,” he says. “It actually does all come back to you. Nothing new here; You reap what you sow,” Goss says.
Goss has positioned himself as one of the most important and influential producers of the last 30 years. His intuitive sense for music that was both ground-breaking and visceral led him to a bunch of kids from Palm Desert called Kyuss, who played heavy music with a transcendental edge. Goss worked with the band on three landmark albums in the early 1990s, helping plant the seeds for the so-called desert rock movement that would flower throughout the rest of the decade.
He went on to work with Queens Of The Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, Foo Fighters, The Cult, UNKLE, Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, former Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, even Hollywood star Russell Crowe.
One near miss was Nirvana – Dave Grohl told him that the grunge band had considered Goss as a producer for the follow-up to Nevermind. “They used to listen to Masters Of Reality and Kyuss in their van,” says Goss. “But I would have wanted to fuck their sound up.
“This is yet another track that was years in the making,” he goes on to say of It All Comes Back To You. “The chorus was written on keyboards over a decade ago. The verses were a struggle over the years. Sometimes it’s a nightmare to write a decent chorus before you have the meat of the song first. Again, as with other songs on this album it’s about sorting out what’s real and what isn’t. I think that’s a topic for the times. We have a slew of mystics stating that your own reality is made by yourself. To a small point, they’re right. But here we are, all of us typing all day. Lead into an existence where it seems to be necessary to be online and most of the ‘civilized’ world willfully walking into being zombified digital addicts.”
He continues, “But it does come back to you and you alone the decision to go along with it all or not. We are in uncharted waters in this era, probably like we have been for at least 50 years. The result is showing its head.”
Previous single “Mr Tap ‘n Go” is a bloodthirsty vaudevillian dancing monster entertaining the planet with a syringe in one hand and a child in the other. “The unauthorized veterinarian trying to scramble all of us animals into sick acceptable submission. And he remains invisible to a large portion of the zombified walking corpses left in the world,” he says.
This followed Sugar, which was released in May 2024 and heralded their return. Hypnotic, poignant, and vulnerable, it builds from a stirring melody into a grand, orchestrated swell of emotion, with Goss’s ethereal yet soulful voice floating over the top of it.
The characters that occupy The Archer are the nameless and faceless people that one sees at times or regularly observes driving on whatever road we’re both on briefly. “Everyone has a story. And their own story is the most important thing in the world to them,” he says. “No one is special. Everyone is heading towards, or actually in, their own ‘Gethsemane’ moment- a New Testament narrative that exemplifies the cold realization of one’s fate. Sweating blood is more common than most can imagine.”
“The Archer is whoever one perceives as their invisible ruler of fate,” explains Goss. “Often, the archer is very visible to those who pay attention. Maybe some even think he is the dictatorial god. Or even a conjured entity. But all can agree that the archer has impeccable skill at hitting the target.”
The arrival of The Archer —produced by Goss and featuring guitarist Alain Johannes, drummer John Leamy, and bassist Paul Powell—heralds the welcome return of Masters Of Reality.
Future-facing, Goss is going to take 2025 with both hands. “The challenge of creating the dynamic range of the new music is a bit daunting at the moment because we haven’t done these songs live yet. But I believe once we’re in rehearsals with a bit of sweat, we’ll have a blast. A weird, sometimes melancholic blast but that’s what the blues is; Laughing at both the devil and our own human folly at the same time.”

Acclaimed progressive metal legends OPETH have been honored with the prestigious Best Hard Rock & Metal award at this year’s Swedish Grammis. This achievement marks yet another milestone in the band’s illustrious career, further cementing their legacy as one of Sweden’s most influential and celebrated musical acts.
The award follows the release of ‘The Last Will & Testament,’ the band’s fourteenth studio album, which was officially released on November 22 via Reigning Phoenix Music / Moderbolaget.
Opeth’s fourteenth album was written by Åkerfeldt, with lyrics conferred with Klara Rönnqvist Fors (The Heard, ex-Crucified Barbara). ‘The Last Will & Testament’ was co-produced by Åkerfeldt and Stefan Boman (Ghost, The Hellacopters), engineered by Boman, Joe Jones (Killing Joke, Robert Plant), and Opeth, with Boman, Åkerfeldt, and the rest of Opeth mixing at Atlantis and Hammerthorpe Studios in Stockholm. The strings on ‘The Last Will & Testament’ were arranged by Åkerfeldt and returning prog friend Dave Stewart (Egg, Khan) and conducted by Stewart at Angel Studios in London. Not one to miss a beat, visual artist Travis Smith returns to the fold, crafting his 11th cover, a haunting “photograph” reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s infamous “Overlook Hotel” photograph. Miles Showell (ABBA, Queen) also revisits mastering and vinyl lacquer cutting at Abbey Road Studios in London.
Åkerfeldt rolls out the red carpet for storied flautist and Jethro Tull main man Ian Anderson. Not only do Anderson’s signature notes fly on “§4” and “§7”, he narrates on “§1”, “§2”, “§4”, and “§7”. Joining Anderson, Europe’s Joey Tempest lends a backing vocal hand on “§2”, while Åkerfeldt’s youngest daughter, Mirjam Åkerfeldt, is the disembodied voice in “§1”.
‘The Last Will & Testament ‘is gripping from start to finish, jaw-dropping inside and out, representing some of Opeth’s finest material to date. Just as Opeth welcomed many into its distressed arms over the years, the Swedes again deliver on the promise that great music always tells a compelling story—this time with growls.

More than three decades into their career, Opeth have trained their admirers to expect the unexpected. But even by their own standards, the Swedish progressive titans have conjured something extraordinary this time around. The band’s 14th studio exploration, The Last Will & Testament, is the darkest and heaviest record they have made in decades, it is also the most fearlessly progressive. A concept album recounting the reading of one recently deceased man’s will to an audience of his surviving family members, it brims with haunting melodrama, shocking revelations and some of the wildest and most unpredictable music that songwriter/frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt has ever written.
“I have become quite interested in family, and the idea that blood is not always thicker than water,” Åkerfeldt explains. “I became interested in how family members can turn on each other. I saw an interview with this guy whose family had all turned against him, over the inheritance, so I wrote a song about that on the last record. The idea stuck with me, and then along came the TV show Succession, and I loved that series. That was in the back of my head too. It felt like an interesting topic that you could twist and turn a little bit.”
The follow-up to 2019’s widely acclaimed In Cauda Venenum; The Last Will & Testament is set in the shadowy, sepia-stained 1920s. It slowly reveals its secrets like some classic thriller from the distant, cobwebbed past, with each successive song shining more light on the stated machinations of our dead (but definitely not harmless) protagonist. The emotional chaos of the story is perfectly matched by Opeth’s vivid but claustrophobic soundtrack, which artfully winds its way towards a crestfallen but sumptuous finale. Masters of their own idiosyncratic musical domain, Opeth have never sounded more unique.
“I knew I could go a bit overboard and wild with the music, a bit heavier and a bit more metal, maybe, because I felt it would fit the concept, which is dark and kind of complex. You might dabble with the occult in your youth and write songs about Satan, but this felt like I could make a story about real evil, and about human behaviour. It felt like the music for this concept should be on the heavier side of things. It’s a pretty heavy topic.”
Proud adherents to a progressive ethos, Opeth have never repeated themselves, and The Last Will & Testament is every bit as revelatory and adventurous as its 13 predecessors. But one thing is undeniable: Mikael Akerfeldt’s peerless death metal growls are back, for the first time since Watershed in 2008.
“I like to be unfashionable, in a way,” grins Åkerfeldt. “So, when it comes to bringing that kind of death metal vocal back, I wanted it to happen when people had stopped caring… and I guess that’s now! Maybe it’s a bit surprising, but we did some anniversary type shows, and we played lots of old songs, and I just thought that my death metal voice sounded good. There’s also been a little push because of our new drummer, Walt. He’s a death metal guy. Mendez (Opeth bassist) has been a bit of a horse whisperer, too, saying ‘Maybe you should do something heavier this time…’ In the end I just thought, yeah, let’s give it a try.”
The Last Will & Testament is destined to be a milestone in Opeth’s illustrious recorded history. The band’s first out-and-out concept record, it features guest cameos from Jethro Tull legend Ian Anderson and Joey Tempest, frontman with Swedish rock gods Europe. Only one of the album’s eight songs has a title: closing ballad A Story Never Told. The rest are simply labelled as numbered chapters in this slowly unfolding saga of deceit, recrimination and betrayal. Enigmatic, unsettling and immersive, The Last Will & Testament is a turbulent, prog metal tale like no other.
To add to an overwhelming sense that The Last Will & Testament is a landmark record for Opeth, its guest stars are of impeccable and legendary quality. Ian Anderson has been making imaginative and influential music for nearly 60 years, both with Jethro Tull and as a solo artist, and remains one of progressive rock’s most revered figures. He joins Opeth here for the first time, performing as the voice of the album’s chief protagonist and contributing some glorious flurries of flute.
“With Ian, it’s about his voice and just how he is. I decided we should have spoken word, and if that was going to happen, the voice should be Ian’s. He’s like a distinguished gentleman. Everything he says has authority. So, it was just perfect. No one else would have been as good. I felt maybe it was a bit too cliched to ask him to play a flute solo too, but instead, he asked me, ‘Do you need a flute solo?’ and so obviously I said, ‘Yes! Yes, we do!’”
Another legend of the rock world to grace the new Opeth album with his presence and talent is Joey Tempest, singer with Europe.
“On the record, Joey does this call and response with Ian, which was another dream come true for me,” Åkerfeldt says. “I love Europe and I love Joey. We’ve become buddies over the years. So that was a big thing for me. He also knows Ian and had met him a few times. He’s a fan of Tull, so it was cool to have them on the same track. You don’t want to have guests that just for the glitter and glamour. You want someone that’s going to add something to the record, and those two guys were perfect.”
Making his recorded debut alongside Opeth’s long-established line-up of Mikael Åkerfeldt, guitarist Fredrik Åkesson, bassist Martin Mendez and keyboard maestro Joakim Svalberg on The Last Will & Testament is new drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, who joined the band in 2022. Åkerfeldt is eager to commend his new comrade’s immense drumming abilities, while observing that recording drums for the new album was a virtually stress-free process.
“I knew Walt was a great drummer, but I didn’t know how good he was. We’re not crappy musicians in this band. We can play. But we sat there at Rockfield Studios, and he just was doing these insane, technical songs in one take. We were almost recording it in real time! [Laughs] He’s amazing.”
After three decades of dazzling the world, Opeth have made their most daring creative leap yet. The Last Will & Testament is a progressive and dramatic triumph, and yet more proof that expecting the unexpected is the only way forward for fans of Sweden’s finest.
“It’s a restless record for me,” concludes Åkerfeldt. “It’s an explosion of ideas, which I like. It’s a bit shorter and snappier. But I definitely didn’t want to rehash anything. The only thing that has come back is some of those death metal screams, but the mindset is still much more forward looking. In typical Opeth fashion, it’s not a direct record that you understand and that you love or hate right away. It takes time and if you put that time into it, you might like it… or hate it! It feels like it was written on a whim. Which it was, in a way! I hear things on this album and think, where the fuck did that come from?”

On the first single taken from the forthcoming MER Redux Series release “Marc Urselli’s Ramones Redux“, Los Angeles, CA heavy outfit DEATHCHANT present their heavy frying take on the RAMONES classic ‘Judy Is a Punk‘. This crushing new Redux Series installment is scheduled for release on June 6, 2025 via Magnetic Eye Records. Available for pre-order here:http://lnk.spkr.media/ramones-redux
Parallelto “Marc Urselli’s Ramones Redux“, Magnetic Eye Records will release the customary companion album entitled “Marc Urselli’s Best of Ramones Redux” that contains 17 cover renditions of deep cuts and all-time classics from across the RAMONES‘extensive catalogue recorded by some of the heavy underground’s most exciting artists.
DEATHCHANT comment:
“The Ramones are one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time that loved singing about not doing stuff”, vocalist and guitarist TJ Lemieux quips. “Well, we love not doing stuff, but we also love the Ramones, so we covered ‘Judy Is a Punk’ for Magnetic Eye’s Ramones compilation.“
Doug Stuckey adds: “Nothing, we can say that hasn’t already been said about one of the best bands ever”, the guitarist writes: “Bad boy rock, bad boy roll, gabba, gabba, see them go R.A.M.O.N.E.S!“
DEATHCHANT were formed in Los Angeles, CA in 2018. Ever since, they have been hard to pigeon-hole stylistically, as they gleefully mix something new, something old, something borrowed, and some psychedelic, sludgy, droning gold into their particular brand of heavy metal. Well, the Americans sure are one of the most singular heavy bands around as their three full-length albums so far, “Deathchant” (2019), “Waste” (2021), and “Thrones” (2023) make abundantly clear. Look out for their next hot recording!

Rock took a turn towards the bombastic, complex, and symphonic in the early 70s of the last century. YES had released the monumental “Close to the Edge” in 1972, not even a year later GENESIS were “Selling England by the Pound”, and LED ZEPPELIN entered the “Houses of the Holy” also in 1973.
It very much looked liked as if the greasy, long-haired kids of rock were all becoming posh and polished. Yet in Downtown New York, a very different scene emerged that begged to differ. In a new club, a bunch of leather-clad rowdy youths that called their band RAMONES gave their debut show at CBGB’s on August 16, 1974. They were loud, their hard-hitting songs needed few chords, hardly lasted longer than two minutes, and they barely gave a damn about playing perfect notes. The world of music was about to change forever.
The RAMONES are unquestionably the most ubiquitous American punk rock band of all time, whose spirit of rebellion and music have inspired generations; and still remains alive while all original members have sadly passed far too early.
With three chords and straightforward lyrics, the RAMONES embraced a stripped-down, high-energy approach that was both primal and revolutionary when it arrived in the shape of the self-titled debut album “Ramones” in 1976. They went on to influence some of the most recognizable rock, punk and metal bands of the next several decades, ranging from BLACK FLAG, NIRVANA, METALLICA, CIRCLE JERKS, WHITE ZOMBIE, PEARL JAM, and GUNS N’ ROSES, to name just a few. The mighty MOTÖRHEAD even dedicated a song to them.
The RAMONES perfectly represented and encapsulated the essence of the underground, holding true to their sound and style for decades, inspiring multiple generations, and establishing eternal cultural significance despite never achieving true commercial success themselves.
Magnetic Eye’s Redux Series was created to pay homage to classic albums from across music history. The label has charged themselves as chroniclers and archivists to contribute to keeping the memory of outstanding artists and records alive and transfer their music to the sound of new generations.
“Ramones Redux” re-imagines and celebrates the punk legends’ debut album from start to finish, and is accompanied by “Best of Ramones Redux”, which includes new renditions of deep cuts and classics from across their catalog. As a first for a Magnetic Eye Redux release, this homage to the RAMONES has been masterminded and curated by New York City and London-based Italian-Swiss audio engineer, sound designer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and Grammy winner Marc Urselli.
The Magnetic Eye Redux Series features hand-picked classic albums from across the history of rock and metal re-imagined in their entirety from start to finish. Artists we love from within and outside the heavy rock landscape choose tracks to make their own, bringing these milestone records into the new millennium with crushing heaviness and searing energy. To date, we’ve produced Redux editions of PINK FLOYD’s “The Wall”, HELMET’s “Meantime”, BLACK SABBATH’s “Vol. 4”, HENDRIX’s “Electric Ladyland”, ALICE IN CHAINS’ “Dirt”, AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, SOUNDGARDEN’s “Superunknown”, and JETHRO TULL’s “Aqualung”, which have included artists like RED FANG, MATT PIKE, PALLBEARER, THE MELVINS, ALL THEM WITCHES, KHEMMIS, ASG, SUPERSUCKERS, ZAKK WYLDE, MARK LANEGAN, RUBY THE HATCHET, and many more amazing artists.
Join us for our ninth foray into Redux territory as we pay proper respect to the US punk legends RAMONES!
A decade after their debut, Danish rockers BLENDED BREW are bringing hidden gems to light. “Roll The Dice”, out today, presents a collection of previously unreleased songs that were originally written for their first album but never made it to the final tracklist.
Exactly ten years ago, Blended Brew introduced themselves to the Danish rock scene with “Hand Patrones”, a record that set the stage for their journey. During that creative process, some songs were set aside – not because they lacked quality, but because they didn’t quite fit at the time. However, these tracks always held a special energy, waiting for the right moment to resurface.
“We always felt there was something unique about these songs, but back then, they just didn’t find their place”, says lead singer Jimmy Månsson. “Now, with a decade of growth and experience behind us, it feels like the perfect time to finally share them”.
These long-forgotten recordings have been kept in the band’s personal archives, waiting for the right opportunity. Now, revived and given new life, they serve as a bridge between Blended Brew’s early days and their evolution over the years. “Roll The Dice” offers fans a chance to hear the sound that nearly became part of their debut album – now enriched with the maturity and depth gained over time.
“Roll The Dice” is available now on all digital platforms via Mighty Music. It can be heard here.
“Roll The Dice” tracklist:
1. Roll The Dice 2. Traveling Song 3. Burning Soul 4. Corner Of Trust 5. Grateful Moment 6. Weirdo 7. Crossing Craziness 8. Intervene 9. King Confidence
Lineup: Jimmy Månsson – vocals, guitar Lord Sebastian Groset – piano, organ, blues harp Christoffer Beck – drums
