Gothenburg-based melodic metal force DRAGONLAND is currently gearing up to return with their brand new album, The Power Of The Nightstar, to be released on October 14, 2022 through AFM Records. It’s the band’s first full-length studio album after more than 10 years.
Such a long time span without a new record could be reason enough for a band to fall into oblivion, unless of course they left a lasting impression before their hiatus. In case of DRAGONLAND, who have inspired their extensive fanbase repeatedly since the release of their debut The Battle Of The Ivory Plains in 2001, the anticipation of new material has continued to grow from year to year and following their 2011-album, Under The Grey Banner. Finally, your wait is over and DRAGONLAND returns to the heavy music scene, with their colossal, new album The Power Of The Nightstar!
Previously-released, first singles, “Flight From Destruction” and the epic album title track, already showcased the band’s incredible energy for a sensational comeback, with an album of an amazing range of wonderfully haunting, fast-paced melodic metal they are known and loved for. Today, the Swedes have shared a new single taken of The Power Of The Nightstar, and reveal:
“This third single, entitled “The Scattering of Darkness” showcases a more progressive side of “The Power Of The Nightstar”. We are here at a point in the story where our protagonists are exploring a new planet to which fate has led them. They are digging deep into the very planetary core, in search of a fabled artifact – its existence prophesied by mumbling sages.
The initial mood of the track is thus a bit exploratory in nature, with the verse modulating in key several times, before finding its way back to the tonic key just in time for the glorious chorus – Dragonland songwriting at its very finest!”
Listen to the new DRAGONLAND song, “The Scattering of Darkness”, HERE!
Their upcoming album, The Power Of The Nightstar impressively illustrates, that DRAGONLAND continues to be among the most energetic and passionate bands of their genre. It’s not only the band’s longest and most elaborate record to date, it also documents a remarkable artistic development. “The overall approach is a bit more cinematic sound-wise than our earlier releases,” keyboardist Elias Holmlid explains, adding: “Compared to ‘Under The Grey Banner’, the new album features more electronic elements while retaining and refining the symphonic parts. Fans of Dragonland will definitely recognize the songwriting style, which we’ve taken to even more epic proportions this time around, with dense choirs and maximized production values.”
DRAGONLAND‘s new magnum opus was mixed and mastered by studio icon Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, and will be available on October 14, 2022 through AFM Records. The pre-sale is available at THIS LOCATION!
The debut album from KINGS OF MERCIA, the new group formed by acclaimed rock/metal guitarist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning, Arch / Matheos) and powerhouse rock vocalist Steve Overland (FM) is out today via Metal Blade Records. Accompanying the duo on the self-titled release are Matheos’ Fates Warning bandmate Joey Vera on bass, and legendary drummer Simon Philips.
To celebrate the album’s release, Kings of Mercia are pleased to share the video for the third single “Humankind”, which you can see here:
TRACKLIST: 01. Wrecking Ball 02. Humankind 03. Sweet Revenge 04. Set the World on Fire 05. Too Far Gone 06. Liberate Me 07. Nowhere Man 08. Everyday Angels 09. Is It Right? 10. Your Life
Best known as the founding guitarist for Fates Warning, but with countless other projects under his belt – including Arch / Matheos and most recently Tuesday The Sky – Jim Matheos is incapable of stifling his creativity. In early 2021, he started working on the songs that would become Kings Of Mercia‘s self-titled debut album, bringing his distinct style yet doing something a little different. “I started writing without any real idea of what direction I wanted to go in or what I was going to do with the material. The first few songs came together quickly and were a bit more straightforward than I’m used to, and I really liked that idea, kind of going back to my early heavy/hard rock roots.” Not having any pre-conceived ideas of what the record should or would end up sounding like, at least early on, certainly helped, “as did the fact that it’s our first record, so there was nothing to measure it against or expectations to live up to, even if only in my own head.”
Churning out songs, Matheos’ next concern was to find the musicians who would help him realize the material, and his first priority was a vocalist. It was his friend Jeff Wagner who suggested FM‘s Steve Overland, and another friend, rock journalist Dave Ling, who put them in touch with each other. “Jim had asked Dave for my contact details, we talked about his idea for mixing the two styles, his heavier background, with my melodic/bluesier direction,” says Overland. “We decided to try a collaboration on one song and see how it worked, we came up with the track “Humankind”, and we both loved it.” Having already settled on this hard rock direction, it was only once Matheos got the first couple of songs back from Overland that it became all the way clear of the shape the record would take, with the vocalist sending over his parts every few weeks, everything gradually coming together.
Behind the kit for the record is the legendary Simon Phillips (ex-Toto, Derek Sherinian), one of Matheos’ favorite drummers. “I decided to contact him on a whim, not really expecting that he’d be available or interested in this project. But, to my surprise, he liked the music and was able to fit some recording into his schedule. It’s an honor to share a credit with him and I couldn’t be happier with what he added to the record.” Rounding out the group is bassist Joey Vera – Matheos’ Fates Warning bandmate – who brings his trademark style and professionalism to the table. “My old friend and co-worker Joey Vera was a natural choice for bass. Not only did I know he would deliver performance-wise, but it was nice to have a familiar face among the new personalities.” With these players involved it was an easy, stress-free process throughout, making music for the love of it, and coming up with something that sounds familiar yet new, expanding the repertoire of all involved. This means songs like the half-acoustic ballad, half-swaggering “Too Far Gone” or the beautiful “Everyday Angels”, and the soaring “Wrecking Ball”, which opens the record on a high note, all brought to life in dynamic style.

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA have announced the Death To False AOR Tour 2022 which includes eleven dates across Europe.
Despite the tragic news concerning the recent loss of guitarist David Andersson, the band has decided to let the tour take place. They intend to honor the former guitarist and to celebrate and continue his legacy by continuing to play the music he helped create.
The band comments: “The Legacy continues… September 14th, in the year of 2022 will be a date that none of us will ever forget. Our guitarist David Andersson shut his eyes forever. It was the day we’ve all dreaded for quite sometime. Our hearts are grieving. As Björn went to visit David for the last time at the hospital, he gave him the blessing to continue the musical journey that they both embarked on some 12 years ago. Despite David’s fairly long absence from the band as a touring member, we’ve had an amazing and busy summer with unforgettable shows. However, there’s one thing we haven’t done in a long time: playing club shows. We can’t see a better way to celebrate David’s life and music, than to embark on this mini European tour in November, that we’ve been planning for quite a while. We encourage you to join us in this celebration and dance the night away. This winged and nocturnal journey must continue. In David’s honor, we’ve also named the tour “Death to false AOR”. He would’ve loved that – cause if there’s one thing he loathed, it was false and non organic AOR. /The Night Flight Orchestra“

Last Friday, Polish extreme metal overlords BEHEMOTH celebrated the release of their new album Opvs Contra Natvram – receiving critical acclaim from critics, fans and tastemakers all over the world.
Today, the band crowns the release of their career’s most recent milestone with a new visual firework that perfectly pictures the dark and menacing atmosphere created by ‘Versvs Christvs’ – a riveting extended track featuring piano and clean vocals, destined to turn heads.
Frontman and BEHEMOTH visionary, Adam “Nergal” Darski, comments on the track: “Legions! Thank you for the amazing response to the new record! Wow! It feels extremely validating and liberating to have you with us. And now we present the crown jewel, ‘Versvs Christvs’. This video was our first time working the amazing director Agata Alexander, an LA dwelling Pole whose vision and execution created this spectacular result. A special shout-out to our friends at Grupa 13 who assisted on the production. Feast your eyes on this, Legions!”
The band’s 12th studio album is a stark reminder of the rebellion, individuality and unflinching self-expression that BEHEMOTH’s phenomenal work inbues, shaped by a literary worldview. It also reflects a musical evolution, as there’s little doubt that Opvs Contra Natvram is BEHEMOTH’s strongest and most sophisticated musical collection to date.
Alongside the album release, BEHEMOTH dropped a wretched yet addictive pocket game together with Spotify, operable on mobile or desktop, that you can explore here: game.behemoth.pl
Users must endeavour to keep the virtual cross balanced for as long as possible. Take your eyes off the game for a second – and it’s game over. Top scoring participants have the chance to win a pair of tickets for BEHEMOTH’s upcoming The European Siege tour together with ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS and UNTO OTHERS in a city of choice.
BEHEMOTH are not only the creators of Poland’s extreme metal scene, but they are masters of their vision and showcasing what a band can achieve when hard work is put in. With Opvs Contra Natvram they have created 10 fresh chapters, created at a very strange time for the world. Their goal to create something new, something that doesn’t sound like anything that has gone before, is an ambitious one.
